関西で、二人が犬を指差してこんな会話を交わしていました。 A「あれ、ちゃうちゃうちゃう？」 B「えー、ちゃうちゃうちゃうんちゃう？」 A「なーんや、ちゃうちゃうちゃうんかったんかー」 さて、このAさんとBさんがそれぞれ何を伝えているのか、理解することができますか？ Aさんの初めのことばにある「ちゃうちゃう」は、中国原産のチャウチャウという犬のことです。茶色やクリーム色の毛がモコモコとしている可愛い犬ですが、皆さんは見たことがあるでしょうか。三回目の「ちゃう」は関西の方言で「違う」という意味。つまり、「あれ、チャウチャウという犬と違いますか？」、「チャウチャウという犬ではありませんか？」と伝えているのですね。 続いてBさんの初めの「ちゃうちゃう」もチャウチャウ犬のこと。次の「ちゃうんちゃう？」は「違うのと違う」、すなわち「チャウチャウ犬ではないのではないでしょうか」、「チャウチャウ犬ではありませんよ」と解釈します。 さらにAさんは「なーんだ、チャウチャウ犬とは違うんかったんかー」、「チャウチャウ犬ではなかったのか」と言っているわけですね。 一般に、関西の人々は早口ですから他の地域出身の人は、このような会話を耳にすると即座に意味が分からず、戸惑います。 それにしてもBさんの台詞は、実際に口に出して発音するとことばの響きが面白いですよ。 ==== Two people in Kansai were pointing at a dog and talking like this. 日本食の代表といえば「寿司」。小さく握った酢飯の上に魚介類などを乗せて食べるものですが、店や食材によっては高価な食べ物です。しかし、手ごろな値段で食べたい人や生の魚介類が苦手な人でも楽しめる寿司もあります。それは「助六（すけろく）」。稲荷寿司と太巻き寿司がセットになって、駅やコンビニエンスストアなどで売られています。 稲荷寿司は、油揚げ（豆腐を薄く切り、油で揚げたもの。長方形の一辺を切ると、袋状になっている）を醤油と砂糖で煮付け、その中にご飯を詰めた寿司です。太巻き寿司は、酢飯を海苔で巻いてある寿司のことです。中央にキュウリや玉子焼き、シイタケなどの具が入っています。 さて、この寿司のセットがなぜ「助六」という昔の男性の名前で呼ばれているのでしょうか。 その理由は、歌舞伎の『助六所縁江戸桜（すけろくゆかりのえどざくら）』という演目に由来しています。この話は、江戸時代の人々に人気の高い物語で、主人公の名前が助六さんだったのです。彼の恋人の名前は「揚巻（あげまき）」さん。つまり、彼女の名前には「揚（あげ）」＝油揚げを使った稲荷寿司、「巻（まき）」＝太巻き寿司というように、寿司を連想させることばが含まれているのです。そして、この寿司の組み合わせを直接的に「揚巻」と呼ぶのではなく、あえて恋人である「助六」と呼んでいるところに、江戸っ子のしゃれっ気が感じられますね。 ===== A representational food of Japan would be sushi. 「看護」と「介護」。発音が似ていますが、どのように違うのでしょうか。 まず、「看護」を考えてみましょう。「看」の文字は、「目」の上に「手」が添えられています。これは、手をかざしてじっと見ることを意味しているのです。つまり、ただ漠然と目に映るものを見ているのではなく、「見る対象を注意深く見る、見守る」という見方を表わしています。 次に「介」はどうでしょうか。「人」という字の下に「八」を書いています。この「八」は両脇に分かれることを意味し、両側に分かれて左右から中のものを守ったり取り持ったりする様子を表わしています。普段は使われませんが、「介」の文字には「はさむ」「たすける」という訓読み（日本独自の読み方）があるのです。だから、「介護」とは相手の脇からその人を支えたり助けたりすることなのですね。 最後に、両方の熟語に共通する「護」という漢字をみてみましょう。「言」（ごんべん）がついていますので、ことばに関係がある文字です。右側の「 蒦」には「手で外から包むように持つ」という意味があります。ゆえに、「護」の文字は「ことばをかけながら外側から取り巻いてかばうこと」を伝えているのです。 「看護」と「介護」、両者は意味が若干異なりますが、相手を大切に扱うという意味を有する点では共通していますね。 ＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝ The pronunciation of 看護 (kango) or "to nurse" and 介護 (kaigo) or "to care"  are similar, but what are the differences in meaning? Quick LinksWelcome to Kanji Curiosity | The Basics | Glossary Take a look at the following sentence to see if you recognize anything: 政府は過激派グループの活動を注意深く監視した。 Whenever I confront unknown kanji, I try to identify components and patterns. In this case, one thing jumps out at me—this sentence is soggy! Five of the 12 kanji contain the "water" radical, ! In both 過激派 and 注意深く, two out of three characters are sopping wet. Surely this sentence is about fishing, scuba diving, or water conservation.
