Hajimemashite. (はじめまして。)
Watashi wa, Hiroko desu. (わたしは、ひろこです。)
Yoroshiku onegai shimasu. (よろしくおねがいします。)
I am Hiroko. I am pleased to meet you. I just introduced myself in Japanese. In this lesson, you are going to learn how to introduce yourself in Japanese.
There are three sentences to do this and it’s super easy and you are going to learn them all right now. So in just three minutes, you will be able to introduce yourself in Japanese.
Okay here is the three lines.
Hajimemashite. (はじめまして。) Nice to meet you,
Watashi wa (わたしは) stick your name here desu (です)
Watashi wa, Hiroko desu. (わたしは、ひろこです。) and Yoroshiku onegai shimasu. (よろしくおねがいします。) .
First we have Hajimemashite. (はじめまして。) nice to meet you
ha, ji, me, ma, shi, te. (は、じ、め、ま、し、て。 ) Hajimemashite. (はじめまして。).
This expression means nice to meet you.
Hajimemashite (はじめまして) literally means for the first time. This phrase is often the first thing said when introducing oneself and appropriate for all politeness levels.
Next we have Watashi wa, Hiroko desu. (わたしは、ひろこです。)
I am Hiroko. Now Japanese has one tricky point.
The verb comes at the end of the sentence.
So Watashi (わたし) I, Watashi wa (わたしは) my name is Hiroko.
So I put Hiroko, desu (です) Am. I Hiroko am, Watashi wa, Hiroko desu. (わたしは、ひろこです。) I am Hiroko.
So if your name is Mike, you put Mike Watashi wa, (わたしは、) Mike desu (です。) .
Finally we have the copula, don’t be scared.
It’s kind of like a English to be and finally we have Yoroshiku onegai shimasu. (よろしくおねがいします。) it’s pleasure to meet you or pleased to meet you.
Yoroshiku. Yo, ro, shi, ku. Yoroshiku. (よろしく。よ、ろ、し、く。よろしく。)
Onegai. O, ne, ga, i. Onegai. (おねがい。お、ね、が、い。おねがい。)
Shimasu. shi, ma, su. Shimasu. (します。し、ま、す。します。)
Yoroshiku onegai shimasu. (よろしくおねがいします。)
This phrase is contextual and gets its meaning depending on the situation.
This literally means please be good to me.
It is a commonly used expression which corresponds to it’s a pleasure to meet you.
You can often hear these phrases while somebody is bowing Yoroshiku onegai shimasu. (よろしくおねがいします。)
See all these words. We are going to say the exact same thing with .
Ta-dah!
These two words.
First we have Hiroko desu. (ひろこです。) so you just put your name here and desu (です。)
Hiroko desu. (ひろこです。) I am Hiroko.
This means exactly the same as the other sentence we looked at. I am Hiroko. Watashi wa, Hiroko desu. (わたしは、ひろこです。) but it’s okay to say Hiroko desu. (ひろこです。) without Watashi wa, (わたしは、) I.
I is implied. So in sentence 2, we have yoroshiku (よろしく) and no "onegai shimasu" (おねがいします) but it means exactly the same thing.
So a very informal introduction is, Yoroshiku (よろしく。) Hiroko desu. (ひろこです。)
Now this is not for business meetings or formal situations but super informal situations only.
Now there is no excuse for you not to be able to introduce yourself in Japanese
Hajimemashite. (はじめまして。)
Watashi wa, Hiroko desu. (わたしは、ひろこです。)
Yoroshiku onegai shimasu. (よろしくおねがいします。)
