「大」と「太」と「犬」。この三つの漢字はとてもよく似ています。それぞれどのような成り立ちで生まれた文字なのでしょうか。 まず、「大」は人間が手足を広げて立っている様子を記号化した漢字です。手を身体につけて立ったり、手足を曲げて座ったりしている姿よりも大きく見えることから、「おおきい」という訓読みや「たっぷりとしてゆとりがあるさま」という意味を持つようになりました。 次に、「太」は「大」の文字が「たっぷりと、ゆとりがある」という意味を持つのに類似していて、「たっぷりとふくれている様子」「豊かであるさま」「ゆったり落ち着いている姿」という意味を持っています。しかし、元来は「泰」という文字を使っていました。これの省略した文字として「太」という漢字が使われるようになったのです。「泰」の文字は中央下に「水」を表わす記号を書き、その周囲に「両手」を表わす横線と「大」を加えることで成り立っています。つまり、「両手でたっぷりと水を流す様子」を示しているのです。「大」という部分は「たっぷりと」という意味だけでなく「タイ」と読む発音も表わしています。 最後に、「犬」です。これは後ろ足二本で立っている姿を記号化したもので、右上の「、」は耳を表わしています。だから「大」や「太」とは関連がありません。ちなみに、「ケン」という読み方は犬の鳴き声を真似した発音です。 ＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝ 大 “big”,  太 “fat” and 犬 “dog”. 「花」という漢字は漢字学習の初期段階で習いましたね。この文字を分解してみると、「廾」（くさかんむり）と「化」に分けられます。昔の人は、花を見たときに、「これは緑の草が変化して、赤や白になったのだ」と考えたのでしょう。だから、「草（廾）が化ける」と記号化したのです。 「貨」という文字にも「化」が見られますよ。この文字は金銭を意味し、「貝がら」が通貨として用いられていたことを表わしています。金銭は様々な物と交換できるもの。つまり、金銭は時として他の物に「変化」するのです。 さて、「訛」という漢字を見たことがありますか？　これは「なまり」と読みます。方言のことですね。直接的には「本来の姿を変えたことば」を意味していますが、地方によって表現の仕方が変化している言い回しのことを「なまり」というのです。 では、「革」が「化ける」とどうなりますか？　「靴」（くつ）になります。 さらに「木」が「花」のように「化ける」ときには？　「椛」（もみじ）という漢字になります。秋になるとカエデの葉は花のように赤や黄色に色づきます。日本人は、この様子を表わして「椛」という文字を作りました。 「化」の文字は、左側が倒れた人を、右側が座った人を表わしているのだそうです。また、一説には左側は正常に立っている人、右側は変わったポーズをしている人を表わしているとか。いずれにせよ、通常とは姿を変えている様子を示しています。このため、「化」の文字が書かれる漢字は、何らかの変化を意味することとなるのです。 ＝＝＝＝ You learn the kanji 花 (hana) or “flower” at the beginning of your kanji study. たくさんの木がびっしりと茂っている様子を表わす漢字が「森」。いかにも「木」が生い茂っているように感じられますね。 「晶（しょう）」は「水晶」という熟語に用いられ、人名漢字としては「あきら」や「まさ」と読みます。見るからに明るい印象を受ける漢字ですが、星が三つ光る様子を表わしてできた文字です。澄み切って輝いているものを表わすときに用いられます。 では「轟」はどうでしょう。「車」が三台も走っていますよ。こんなに車の通りが激しいと、大きな音がするでしょうね。この漢字は「とどろく」と読み、地響きのするような大きな音を表わしています。熟語では「轟音（ごうおん）」があり、とどろきわたる大きな音を意味しています。 牛が三頭いる「犇」は？　これは「ひしめく」と読み、大勢の人が一ヶ所に集まって、互いに押し合うようにすることを指します。また「はしる」という意味もあり、牛が驚いて一斉に走り出す様子を示しています。 石を三つ集めると「磊」。石がごろごろと転がっている様子を表わしています。そこから転じて、小さいことにこだわらない人や快活で度量が広い人柄のことを「磊落（らいらく）」と表現するようになりました。 同じ漢字を三つ組み合わせて作られた文字は、いずれも元になった漢字を強調する意味を持つことが分かりますね。 ＝＝＝ The kanji that expresses the appearance of thickly growing trees is 森. 「海豚」という漢字、読めますか？ 「海」という文字が見られるので海洋生物であることが想像できるでしょう。しかし、海に暮らす生き物で「豚」のような外見をしているものは思いつきませんね。これは「イルカ」と読みます。同じ哺乳類に属し、さらに「偶蹄目」（ぐうていもく）という生物学上の分類でも同一グループに入ることから、この漢字が選ばれたようです。 では、「海象」は？ 肌の質感がゾウに似た海の生き物…セイウチです。確かに両者とも、灰色でごつごつ、ざらざらした皮膚をしていますからね。 さらに、「海猟」は？　この他にも「猟虎」と書いて同じ読み方をする生き物ですよ。「ラッコ」と読みます。ラッコはイタチの仲間で、外見も似ていますね。しかも、毛皮が珍重されて狩猟対象だった（「海」と「狩猟」の「猟」の文字を組み合わせて「ラッコ」と読ませていますよ）ことも共通点です。 最後に、「海栗」は？　寿司のネタとしても人気の高いおいしい生き物であることがヒントです。これは「ウニ」と読みます。栗のような黄色い色合いといい、甘みといい、まさにウニは「海の栗」といえるでしょう。 これら日本だけの特殊な読み方を見ていくと、苦労して漢字を当てはめていった様子が思い浮かびますね。 ＝＝＝＝ Can you read the kanji　海豚?
