ネコとハトとサメ。この動物たちの共通点は何だと思いますか？

一見、何のつながりもなさそうですが、実は三種類とも身体の状態を表わすときに登場する動物なのです。

まず、ネコですが「猫背」ということばを聞いたことがありますか。ネコの背中は前のめりに丸くなっています。この様子から、胸をはらずに背中を丸めている姿勢を指して「猫背」と呼ぶようになりました。
ネコと同様にイヌも身近な動物の代表格ですが、「犬背」ということばはありません。

次に、ハトです。「鳩胸」という表現は、ハトのように胸部が前方へ突き出た状態を示しています。

最後に、サメ。鋭い牙から歯の様子を示すのではないか、と予想した人もいるかもしれません。いいえ、これは肌の様子を表わすときに使われるのです。「鮫肌」とは、ざらざらとした肌の様子。実際にサメの肌に触れたことがある人は稀だと思いますが、サメの皮はわさびがすりおろせるくらいにざらざら、ぶつぶつしているのです。よって、ざらざらした質感の肌を「鮫肌」と呼んでいるのです。ちなみに、肌に関しては恐怖を感じたときに腕などの毛穴が収縮し、ぶつぶつとあわ立った状態になることがあります。これを「鳥肌が立った」と表現しますよ。「鮫肌」は恐怖を感じなくてもざらざらした肌のことを指しています。

それぞれが動物の特徴を上手に人体に当てはめていて面白い表現ですね。

A cat, a pigeon and a shark. What do you think these three have in common?

At a glance, they may not seem like they have anything in common, however, the
three of them appear in expressions of body conditions.

Beginning with cat, have you heard the term nekoze or “cat back”? A cat’s back is rounded leaning towards. From this appearance, nekoze came about to indicate the posture where your chest is not out and your back is curved.　Similarly to the cat, the dog is also an animal close to people, but there is no such thing as inuze or “dog back”.

Next we have pigeon. The expression hatomune or “pigeon breast” conveys the form when the chest sticks out in front like a pigeon.

Lastly, shark. There might have been people who predicted that it indicates teeth from the shark’s sharp fangs. No, it is used when describing the appearance of the skin. Samehada or “shark skin” means when the skin is rough.　By the way, when you feel fear, there are times when the pores on your arms contract and the skin feels bumpy. This is expressed as torihada ga tatta (goosebumps) or literally “bird skin has risen”.  Samehada describes your skin feeling rough even when nothing scary has happened.

Each of these is interesting expressions taken from characteristics of different animals and placed well on human appearance.
