Mō pekopeko da yo” or “I’m so pekopeko.
This phrase is uttered in a specific situation, can you guess what?

Pekopeko is a type of mimetic word and describes the manner of something.  In this case it means that the speaker is hungry.  The pekopeko describes the person’s stomach curving in since the person is hungry. Peko is repeated twice, and is never used by itself as “mō peko da yo“.

What do you think the following means?
Aitsu wa pekopeko shite iru” or “That guy is pekopeko.”

This describes that the guy is bowing many times in excess.  It also implies that by bowing many times, the person is trying to flatter their superiors and please them.  A person’s head is closer to the ground when he/she bows, which makes him/her look bent or dented.  In this case peko also needs to be repeated twice as pekopeko.

Mimetic words cannot be avoided when you learn Japanese, and like pekopeko, many are repeated twice.
For example, jirojiro describes when you look up and down at something, and kirakira means to sparkle or twinkle.

Enjoy the sounds of the words while you learn these words and you’ll improve your Japanese expressions.
