First, I can't imagine wanting to stay up till dawn. I did plenty of that in college, and I'm not eager to revisit the experience. Second, look how he said "throughout the night": 夜中中 (yonakajū) Two instances of 中 in a row, each with different readings! Let's break this down to see what's going on here: 夜 (YA, yo, yoru) means "night." 中 (CHŪ, naka) means "in, inside, middle." Yonaka combines two kun-yomi (yo and naka) to mean "deep in the night." Hi everyone! Previously I introduced a game called “Fukuwarai” in my last blog. Has anyone tried it? Today, I want to introduce another useful game that you can play with your friend. I am sure that many of you have played this game with cards. It is a language version of “Concentration” (Shinkei suijaku). This is also known as memory, in which all of the cards are laid face down on a surface and two cards are flipped face up over each turn. The object of the game is to turn over pairs of matching cards. If you have the chance to play this game with your classmates, make your own cards and try with Japanese. Think again! Our old friend 後 (KŌ, GO, ato, ushi(ro): after, behind) provides us with a way to say that. Although 遅れる (okureru) is the main way to write "to be late," 後れる has the same yomi (okureru) and the same meaning. And as with people or dogs (or most creatures), it takes a while to get to know a complex kanji. By "complex," I don't mean something like this: Read as KYŪ or kuji, this crazy concoction means "lottery" (though "circuit board" would have been more fitting). It certainly looks complicated.
