Kanji Breakdown #3

昨夜見た生なましい悪夢がまだ頭から離れない
Sakuya mita namanamashii akumu ga mada atama kara hanarenai.
I’m still haunted by a vivid nightmare I had last night.

昨夜 (sakuya: last night)     yesterday + night
(mi(ru): to see)

In Japanese, people speak of “seeing” sleep-related dreams, rather than “having them.”

生なましい (namanamashii: vivid, fresh)

This can also be written as 生々しい or 生生しい.

悪夢 (akumu: nightmare)     bad + dream
(atama: head)
離れる (hana(reru): to be separated from, leave, go away)

Whereas an English speaker would speak of being “haunted” by a dream, this person says the dream “has not left” (離れない, hanarenai) his or her mind. Fascinating!
