Sample Sentence with 競い合う

競い合う (kisoiau: to compete with, vie for)

彼らは、賞を取ろうとして互いに競い合った
Karera wa, shō o torō to shite tagaini kisoiatta.
They competed with each other for the prize.

彼ら (karera: they)
賞を取 (shō o to(ru): to win a prize)     prize + to take

As you may know, 取ろうとする (torō to suru) is the informal volitional form of 取る. This verb form means “to try to do something.” In this case, the competitors are “trying to take” the prize, even though “trying” doesn’t appear in the English translation.

互いに (tagaini: mutually, reciprocally)
