Answers to the Verbal Logic Quiz, May 1

1.a. 極言 (kyokugen: to go to extremes + to say) means “to go so far as to say.”

2.c. 雷親父 (kaminarioyaji: thunder + old man (last 2 kanji)) means “irascible old man.”

There is a god of thunder, at least linguistically. You can refer to that god in a number of ways:

雷公 (raikō)     thunder + public!
雷神 (raijin)     thunder + god

Hmm, Breen defines this as “god of lightning.” Clearly, that god multitasked.

And here’s the way to talk about two gods at once:

風神雷神 (fūjin-raijin: the gods of wind and thunder)
     wind + god + thunder + god

I’m sure that will come in very handy when you arrive in Japan!
