残酷 (zankoku: cruelty; harshness)

いったいどんな子供がそんな残酷なことをするだろうか。
Ittai donna kodomo ga sonna zankokuna koto o suru darō ka.
What kind of child does such a cruel thing?

いったい (ittai)

This word intensifies the sentence but has no direct counterpart in the English translation.

子供 (kodomo: child)     child + plural suffix

第一次世界大戦が終わった直後、人々はそのように恐ろしく残酷な戦争が再び起こるだろうとは、夢にも思わなかった。
Dai-ichiji sekai taisen ga owatta chokugo, hitobito wa sono yōni osoroshiku zankokuna sensō ga futatabi okoru darō to wa, yume ni mo omowanakatta.
Soon after the end of World War I, people never thought such a hateful and cruel war would break out again.

第一次 (dai-ichiji: the first)
     ordinal number prefix + one + numerical order
     suffix

世界 (sekai: world)     world + world
大戦 (taisen: great war, great battle)
     great + war
(o(waru): to finish, end)
直後 (chokugo: immediately following)
     immediately + after
人々 (hitobito: each person; people; everybody)
そのように (sono yōni: in that way)
恐ろしい (osoroshii: terrible, dreadful)
戦争 (sensō: war)     war + to argue
再び (futatabi: again, once more, a second time)
(o(koru): to occur, happen)
夢にも (yume nimo: not in one’s wildest dreams)
