How to say seafood in japanese?

Postby MiaGilaani » May 11th, 2012 5:35 pm

I'm coming to Japan this month and I wanted to know how to say "seafood" in japanese. I already know words like sakana (fish), ebi (prawn) etc but I was curious if theres a word for "seafood" which covers fish, prawn, crab etc basically everything under the sea. I can't eat any other meat in japan (beef, chicken etc only if its halal because I'm a Muslim and pork is a major no no) Since I know I wont get to eat any halal meat in Japan so my only choice is seafood which I absolutely love! I read that the katakana version "shifudo" is used but I'm not sure.

I need to say "I only eat seafood/I can only eat seafood"
"which meat / what kind of meat is this?
I can't/don't eat pork (butaniku wo tabemasen) tell me if this is wrong

Also I love bento boxes so I was wondering do bento boxes have any meat other than seafood?

Thanks, (Lord bless the person who answers this)!!!!

シーフード (shiifuudo) seems to be most common. There's also 魚介類 (gyokai-rui) and 海鮮料理 (kaisen-ryouri). You'll find plenty of options in Japanese and Korean restaurants, and tofu is a tasty option too. Bento tend to contain a variety of small dishes including meat, vegetables, seafood and beans, which can be coated and hard to judge, so you'll need to check the ingredients or ask. Here's a few suggestions.

Shiifuudo shika taberaremasen.
I can only eat seafood.

Butaniku/niku wa tabemasen.
I don't eat pork/meat.

Shuukyou-jou no riyuu de ~
For religious reasons ~

Sono o-bentou wa o-niku-iri desu ka?
Does that bento contain meat?

And if you're feeling optimistic.

Sono niku wa haraaru desu ka?
Is that meat halal?

> MiaGilaani-san,
You're right; like Javizy-san answered already, we do have katakana version "shifudo".
Also, 魚介類 (gyokai-rui) is used for referring to fish and seafood,
and 海鮮料理 (kaisen-ryouri) is for seafood dishes.
It might be the best for you to remember the sentence like "I can't eat pork" to specify
what you can NOT eat or want to avoid.
That is;
私は 豚肉が 食べられません。(watashi wa butaniku ga taberaremasen)
Since your religion is one of the minors here, people might not understand the word "halal".
If you want to know what kind of meat it is, it'd be;
これは、何の肉ですか(kore wa nan no niku desu ka)
Hope you'll enjoy food in Japan :D

Harrisonjcastro san,

Thank you for the post.
