Create your own sentence using the Word of the Day!

Postby kevenhuynh » March 18th, 2013 3:18 am

Hello Everyone,
I challenge everyone to create your own sentence using the Japanese word of the day. This would be a great chance for everyone to practice and utilize what we've learned so far as well as allow us to be creative.

Ok I will start out with today's word which is 旅行代理店(りょこうだいりてん - Travel Agency)

僕の彼女が旅行代理店に勤めているから毎年二週間に世界の夢な所に旅行します。
Because my girlfriend works at a travel agency, every year for two weeks we travel to famous places in the world.

This is quite a difficult first word, but I looking forward to reading everyone's sentence so try your best!!!

皆の返事を楽しみにしてるから頑張れ!!!

(もし奈津子さんがこれ読んだら奈津子さんも参加しようか?Jpodの他の部員も?)

いいなぁ~~~How wonderful!!

私は、旅行をする時、旅行代理店でフライトチケットを買います
When I travel, I buy flught tickets at travel agencies.

How about you? ALL of you who read this thred???

奈津子さん、
僕の文を直してくれてありがとうございます!それも参加してくれてありがとうございます!
Thank you for correcting my mistakes as well as participating.

My first mistake was a particle misusage in 二週間に. This means "in 2 weeks", but what I meant was "for 2 week". Hence に is not necessary correct?

My second mistake was a spelling/kanji mistake. Famous is ゆうめい, but I wrote ゆめ instead (sound is similar). To be honest I just hit the spacebar and didn't check the kanji because I was typing to fast  How embarrassing right

Ok today's word is easy カップ (cup)

弟のせいで僕の足の指が黒くなったんです。彼は僕の足の指の上にカップを落ちてしまいました。
It is my younger brother's fault that my toe turned black! He dropped a cup on my toes.

ケビンさん、
Yes! Your understandings about mistakes are all correct. Well, just hitting space bar is quite a common thing
and even if you actually wrote original hiragana correctly, this evil space bar sometimes give you wrong kanji to
trick you   That happens to us Japanese too!

Today's word's sentence was soooooooooo close to perfect!
The last part should be actually 落としてしまいました。
落ちる is intransitive meaning "to fall" so,
カップが落ちます。
[Person] が カップを落とします。

弟が足の指にカップを落としたんですか?いたそう!!

"Watashi no kappu wa pinku desu kara tomodachi ga ijimemasu."
Because my cup is pink, friends bully me.

Andy,
I like you sentence
I think it is mostly correct, but 奈津子さん can confirm that.

Chonny,
あさに私のカップからお茶を飲みます。(I think this is better)
In the morning I drink tea from my cup.

まいあさ、私のカップからお茶を飲みます。(This is more natural I think)
every morning, I drink tea from my cup.

それは大きいカップです。
That (thing/object) is a big cup.

そのカップは大きいです!(I believe this is what you are trying to say)
That cup is big.

でっかい!!!そのカップ!!!(This is how I would say it  )
That's huge!! That cup!!!

Read through them and see if you can see the difference in each sentence. If you need help understanding let me know.

奈津子さん、
You found something that I have not studied yet!!! Actually I've briefly heard of transitive and intransitive words, but I don't know how to tell them apart. Can you briefly explain or point to a Jpod lesson number?

On to today's word: 木(き - tree)another easy one.
僕の友達のニックネームはHit by tree aka HBTなんだ。友達の上に木が落ちたみたいにせいが低くて太ってきちゃったんだ。
My friend's nickname is HBT aka Hit by tree. He is short and fat like a tree fell on top of him
This is a true story and no it was not me who gave him the nickname.
(奈津子さん、僕頑張ったけど、ちょっと変かな僕の文?)

Here's a website that helped me with that subject: http://www.writingcentre.uottawa.ca/hyp ... sintr.html

As for today's sentence...

"Ringo no ki wa kirei da demo orenji no ki no hou ga suki da."
Apple trees are pretty but I like orange trees more.

それは小さい木どかわいいです

I know its probably riddled with mastakes but hopefully the o so helpful jpod team and my fellow memburs can help point out my mastakes so they can be fixed. (I know so much grammer but its kinda useless because i'm not good at stringing it into sentences >_<   how embarressing ne?

That's not so bad. If you can properly identify a lot of words and contexts, you should have good comprehension abilities. Stringing it all together with the proper particles is a nightmare for me too but if you know enough vocabulary then you should be able to muddle your way through a conversation.

Andy,
Thanks for the link however what I meant was that I came tell if a japanese word is a transitive or intransitive. Also I think your sentence is perfect, but I think you are capable of more. How about trying something you just learn recently?

remillardn7528, (Any nickname we can call you by?)
It's best to include the english sentence that you are writing are well so that we can better help you, but below are a couple variations of what I think you are trying to stay.

それは小さくてかわいい木です。
That is a small cute tree.

その木は小さくてかわいいです。
That tree is small and cute.

Ok so today's word is ベージュ(beige)
(personally I hate katakana words for word of the day because I'm not actually learning a new word, but anyhow)

アメリカではベージュは何か誰かつまらないという意味があります。アメリカのスラングです。
In America, "beige" can also mean something or someone who is boring/plain. This is an American slang.
(Heard this once from a friend, but I don't think it is common  )

"Kono beju hijikakeisu ga takasugiru. Dakara, chigau kagu-ya ni iko."
This beige armchair is too expensive. So, let's go to a different furnature shop.

Minasan, kon'nichiwa!!! :D

Wow this thread is getting exciting :kokoro:
Thank you very much everyone :oiwai:

> Andy-san,
I like your sentence too!!
Kevin-san is right; your sentence is perfect
There's another similar way to say:
watashi no kappu wa pinku nanode tomodachi ni ijimeraremasu.
I've heard somewhere that, in English, you should keep the same subject in one sentence. This sentence above
actually have two parts (1. my cup is pink colour; 2. my friends bully me), but both has "watashi" as
(kind of) subject. The first part starts with "watashi no kappu", so the main person here is "watashi".
Then instead of expressing "my friends bully", keep "watashi" as "main" person and express as "I get bullied".

And, thank you very much for the help with link!
That saves my time.... (I know; I'm lazy)

Your sentence with trees is perfect!! :D
Ringo no ki mo orenji no ki mo kirei desu ne! demo, watashi wa ki yori ringo to orenji no hou ga suki desu
(Both apple tree and orange tree are pretty! But I like apples and oranges than their trees)

And....I understand that particles are nightmares... just like preposition in English are the same for us Japanese

Oh, by the way, "beige" is what's called "katakana word" which means it's phonetically adopted.
So, just like you didn't, we don't usually add "iro" like "beeju iro". However, we need "no" to link "beige" to noun:
kono beeju no hijikakeisu wa takasugiru. dakara, chigau kagu-ya ni ikou!
.....too bad for the first shop!

> Chonny-san,
nice try!! :D
You might have read Kevin-san's post with suggestions before mine, so I'd suggest some other possibilities...
1. In the morning, I drink tea out of my cup.
まいあさ、じぶんのカップで紅茶[こうちゃ]をのみます。
=> Every morning, I drink tea with my own cup.
Instead of わたしの, you can also use じぶんの here, like "my own"

2. That's a big cup!
そのカップは大きいです。 / おおきいカップ!
Assuming from "!" at the end, you wanted to express that you were surprised??
Some people might say VERY casually (colloquially) カップでかい!

> ケビンさん、
I kinda thought you might not have learned differences between transitive and intransitive verbs...
As Andy-san suggested the link already, hope it'd help!
Japanese verbs are sometimes difficult to tell if they're transitive or not, but you can always combine particles
and/or "subject"s (i.e. agent or action taker). For instance 落ちる and 落とす (action: to fall)
Action taker for 落ちる: object
Action taker for 落とす: person or object (not the same thing which actually falls)
In other words, 落とす needs a "object" that falls, and "someone/something" that makes it fall.
Hope it makes sense...

As to your sentence with 木... おもしろい
変じゃないですよ!
As you wrote your sentence in informal/casual way, I'd stick to that, and give you another possibility...
It's a bit difficult to say the same thing in easy way....
僕の友達のニックネームは、Hit By Tree の頭文字(かしらもじ)をとって、HBTなんだ。
友達は、倒れてきた木が頭に当たって背が低くなったみたいに小さくて太っちゃったから、このニックネームをつけられたんだ。
I understand what exactly you wanted to say, and I wish I could find the better way to say it in Japanese,
as short as English, but this is the best I could think of.
HBT... Hope I'm not applicable
Are you sure you didn't give it to your mate???

ベージュ=つまらない?? :lol:
That's interesting! I've never heard of it, actually.
We don't have such connections...actually no colour is connected to personalities or characteristics....(except for
black, white and grey for "wrong/guilty", "right/innocent" and "ambiguous")
Most of polititians are.....grey in front of media :obake:

> remillardn7528-san,
it was actually very close!!It could be
それは小さい木ですが、かわいいです。 / それは小さい木だけど、かわいいです。
It's not embarrassing at all! I know exactly how you'd be feeling! Knowing is one thing and being able to use it is another.
And, you've got a good place to practice! :D
Embarrass yourself here as much as you want; it'd NEVER hurt you! No one will never laugh at you here
becasue everyone knows making mistakes is 1000000000000000000 times better than pretending that you know :picket:
Oh, BTW, Kevin-san's sentence それは小さくてかわいい木です etc. are also very correct

Your way sounds much better. I'd never have thought of using the potential form of "ijimeru" like that. I learned something. :flower:
