difference between 言った and 言われた

Postby palver72202 » October 20th, 2015 10:38 am

Hi all, :D

Recently I read a sentence that uses I think this word means "said" in English. But when I looked in jisho.org, the website list the past form of say, 言う、 as 言った。 So what is the difference in usage and meaning? Can you point me to a lesson which uses this word

言った is the past form of 言う and, as you said, it means "said" or "told".

言われる is the passive form of 言う and it means "to be told". 言われた is the past form of the passive, and so means "was told".

palver72202 san,
konnichiwa.
What マイケルsan said is correct.
However, 言われる also means ‘someone said (honorific expression).’
I don’t have the whole sentence so I don’t know which one…
For example,
If the sentence structure is
Person A (this part can be omitted) は Person B に something と言われた, the 言われた is the past form of the passive.
That means ‘I was told ‘study!’ by my mother.

The other one
If the sentence structure is
Person A (person in higher position) が/は something を/と 言われた, the 言われた is an honorific expression.
My teacher told about a schedule of tests to us. (showing respect to the teacher)
