I can't find it anywhere and I don't know if I'm at the right place but... I'm from Canada i was interest in Japan as long as I can remember, though i think i wont be able to go to japan one day But the main question is I would like to transform my house in a " Japanese traditional way " and i don't know what Japanese use for the furniture exactly, i know they use tatami and futon in a room to sleep and fold the futon in the morning to get some place! i can't have the bathroom like they have since we don't have the installation to make one ^_^ but what i really like to know is about the kotatsu if they use it just for winter to warm them up or if it's the dining table in the kitchen, or again if all the Japaneses use western furniture anymore?
We use kotatsu only in winter, but some people might be using only the table part throughout a year (without kotatsu's futon).
Our life styles have more varieties than 50 years ago, so it really depends on where, what kind of house/flat we live and also individual's taste and likes. Some people have both Japanese rooms and wooden floor (western style) and some people prefer sleeping in bed instead of futon.
For your kind answer! I still want to have the kotatsu for dinning table!! I'm practicing to sit in seiza for when i get it! is it comfortable a futon on tatami floor to sleep? Some say that tatami are like concrete floor and others say it is really comfortable... i have too much i like to know that i don't know where to look!
gorenum8938-san, tatami mat is not like concrete... It's of course softer than wooden floor. When we sleep in futon, the tatami mat & futon mat makes the perfect hardness (not too hard, not too soft). It could be really persons' tastes, though.
I don't like seiza.... I can't do more than ....2 minutes? I think you'll be more Japanese than I am some time soon!
I'm proud I have been able to sit in seiza For at least 15-20 minutes! i do start to prefer this position than a chair... I don't know if I'm normal though! i can't wait to be at home to study more of Japanese so far I have 3 lesson of the complete beginner section! it is really true that it's fast learning to talk Japanese with your system! In my country Tatami are really hard to be able to acquire it but i will have them! I need them!
