From your understanding when was the Geisha establishment formalised? In my notes I have the 1800's but 先生 says it is there understanding that it was during the 1650's. I would like clarification if anyone is able.
My understanding is that licensced quarters (for prostitution) arose in the 1600's (with the Tokugawa's making laws about most areas of society; stratifying society and shutting down social mobility) but female geishas didn't appear until later and were licensed as a seperate class in the 1780's
