Quick Mac IME question

Postby Jason » July 1st, 2006 2:31 am

This may be silly, but how the heck do you get the katakana "midpoint dot" in MacOS X? In XP it's mapped to the "/" key, but I searched all over the keyboard for it in OS X and didn't find it.

I have a Japanese keyboard on my laptop. It's really the only way to go. Japanese keyboard layout is much more intuitive than American. Anyway, the layout has the midpoint dot on it. As you said, it's the same key as forward slash.

Two things. To use it, you have to be in Japanese input mode (i.e. typing kana/kanji, not romaji). You have to use the "alt/option" button with it in order to get it to show up.

You can change this in your kotoeri preferences.

I never found it on the / key!

staying with kotoeri in hiragana mode it's also on alt 8
・・・・・・
if you alt 8 in roman mode it's much thicker ••••, more a bullet point.

For me, if I push alt-8 in hiragana mode, I get:
【【【【【【【【
But, yeah, it works in romaji mode (but is thicker, like you said):
••••••••

I'm not sure that's a midpoint mark, like you said, it looks like a bullet.
