Skype Calls?

Postby nyappyrebecca » July 18th, 2008 6:44 pm

How do you know if you have this feature or not?

Hi, there!
First, did you get the free Skype download? http://www.skype.com

Next, add your contacts. These are people you know who have Skype.

Next, do you have a mike? You need a mike to make a call. Some computers have built-in mikes. It also helps to have ear phones or the headset combo of mike and earphones.

Next, there are two types of Skype calls. Computer to computer calls are free! Your friend has to have a mike and they have to download Skype. That's all there is to it. Push the green button to speak. It's completely free!

The other kind of call is very cheap. You have to put in some money at the Skype web site (with PayPal or a credit card). Then you can call any land line or cell phone in the world. The rates are very cheap.

Does this help? Please post a reply if you need more advice!

I am sorry. I should have been more detailed with my question. I thought I saw on this site that you can practice Japanese using skype calls. Is that correct and how do you know if you have this feature with your perscription?

Just to clear things up-- JapanesePod and Skype are two entirely different entities. Skype is just a messaging service like AIM or MSN, but is particularly well suited for internet telephony. While there are threads here done by listeners which discuss meet-ups and practice on Skype, as far as I know JPod has never formally organized such a thing, so anything you've found is by-listeners-for-listeners.

Hope I didn't misinterpret the context here. If I have let me know!

I found it on the site. It said something like 3-4 on skype calls a week or something?

I know that they're two different things. :/ I have skype.

I believe you're referring to the (expensive) Premium Plus subscription.

Not part of the free trial and I think you'd remember paying for it.
I might be wrong but they don't seem to have advertised it heavily.

Using Skype with tandem partners is an inexpensive alternative. While you're unlikely to find a teacher you should be able to find someone in Japan who'd exchange language with you, where you help each other out.

I have a premium membership. It shows that I don't have the feature. Thanks.
