I ran across an interesting Japanese expression, which, like 「机上の空論」, might suggest numerous alternative but interesting story lines, and is particularly applicable to private discussions among employees in large companies or academic institutions.

縁の下の力持ち (unsung hero, i.e. somebody handling the many difficult tasks behind the scenes, while somebody else gets the accolades for more visible tasks, potentially impossible without the efforts of our unsung hero. I'm also very curious how this particular Japanese phrase originated.
