However, today I have a question.

A short time ago, „comb“ was the word of the day.
My question is: とかすは髪にあります in english is: The comb is in the hair. But what would „A comb is for the hair“ be in Japanese?

I think that とかす is a verb that means "to comb". I think the noun is 櫛 or くし.

I'm not at all sure how to say "a comb is for the hair" but it maybe involves 向け, or むけ, which is a suffix that you attach to a noun so that, for example, 「子供向け」 means "for children". So my answer would be:-

櫛は髪向けです。
kushi wa kamimuke desu.

"a comb is for the hair"...
This could be one of those cases wher English sentences are simple and Japanese ones are not.
I'd probably say
くしは、髪に使います。
OR
くしは、髪をとく（とかす）ために使います。
OR
くしは、髪をとかすためのものです。etc.

If you're talking about specific comb, maybe that comb is "for men" (= 男性用)
or perhaps "for broom" ( )! We might use the word ～用 to specify the use.
When it's more general term, we'd probably say ～ためのものです

I decided to quit being a graduate student. Because the classes were completely unrelated to my thesis, everyone only spoke in English, and there was no time to study Japanese, this university's program wasn't the best for me.

I am truly sorry to hear this. That must have been such a difficult decision to make--very difficult, I'd imagine, even to accept that it needs to be made. I very much hope you'll be able to overcome this setback quickly.

Anyway, good for us to have you back here more often.

みんなさん、
I'm not so active in writing here at the moment too. But I'm reading a lot, and I'm still 毎日勉強しています。
At the moment, I'm actually reading a lot in Japanese. Giles Murray's "breaking into Japanese Literature" is quite a read. And I'm heavily working on my Vocab. I want to get to a basic vocabulary of about 1500 to 2000 words, after that I hope I can use Japanese much more freely to carry on my studies. Right now, I'm actually reading those first simple stories in Murray's anthology, I just have to look up all the vocabulary.
It's still an awesome feeling though, to actually READ all those doodles!!

I just typed it into my MAC and both give you the correct kanji.　The Japanese - Japanese dictionary says that they are used the same way as well.

これを日本語でうまく書けなかったから、英語で書けてしまいました。

It was a difficult decision, but at this point in my life, I don't want to spend lots of time doing something that I do not really like doing. I thought university was the answer for what I wanted, but it ended up being a lot of hoops to jump through, with a lot of stress attached. I felt pretty bad for a while, wondering if it was the right decision. However, now I feel better and know it was the right thing for me to do.

I always hate typing double N's with the IME, because of the doupletap you have to give an ん. Most of my typos are in that, like my omnipresent "こんいちは".

Anyway, in Romaji I'm under the impression that I mostly read minna-san (not mina-san), which is why I mostly try to write みんな. It just looks more correct to my eyes!!

As far as I rememer, 皆さん is a more polite way to say みんな, isn't it?

I've seen many people writing みんなさん both in hiragana and romaji.
But, like Michael-san pointed it out, it's either みんな or みなさん

And, yes, you're right. みんな is a very casual form for みな（皆） which now sounds a bit "old"
So, 皆 was the word to say "everyone", and to be polite, さん was added after 皆.
However, two only syllable みな didn't sit well to call "everyone" in casual conversation and became みんな

If みんな is already a casual-only word, there's no need to add さん to be polite, right?

In written language in very formal and probably a bit old style, 皆 is still used.
For instance, we can hear this word in Catholic Mass when the priest says the very line from famous Jesus
"take this, all of you, and eat it...." This "all of you" in Japanese is 皆 not みんな or 皆さん
