Postby ly2kutd1552 » August 29th, 2014 4:56 am

I'm slightly confused as to what exactly this means in English

If I were to say this

Tokyo Traffic Hall is known by many over many years as a symbol in front of Yurakucho Station.
Tokyo Traffic Hall is deem by many to be a symbol of Yurakucho Station front.

in this case what does the 的 mean. If 存在 means existence として means as.
Could シンボル的存在として mean as a symbolic existence? Or

Some other examples. I'm unsure if the translations are correct.

That toy is designed to be some sort of a partner/like a partner of Agnes.

Chris works for Momo in a butler-like position.

Hana is like a little sister to Jim.

In this case, Hana is not Jim's blood little sister, rather somebody who is like a little sister to him Am I correct?
Could it also mean Hana is Jim if he were a little sister? I think I'm over thinking things.

Much help is appreciated. Thank you.

的 is an adjectival noun and it’s said that it means ‘like or typical’ in English. However, it might be hard to put the nuance in English translation.

The sentence may be
Tokyo Traffic Hall has known for many years as a symbol (as a symbolic existence object) in front of Yurakucho station.

I am wondering whether Japanese sentences are from you or other source.

The sentence beings with その玩具, children should use 玩具 and パートナー should be used for adult therefore, they hardly are used in one sentence….

The second sentence is good.

Regarding the sentence begins with Hana, I think the sentence should be

If the sentence is one of them above, the meaning is that Hana is not actual Jim’s younger sister but she behaves like his younger sister.

I hope it could be helpful.

Thank you Yuki sensei!

I made some of the sentences up myself and got some from various other sources.
I think I understand now.

Once again, thank you! :)
