I need to stop ~ (Grammar)

Postby ly2kutd1552 » May 19th, 2014 7:17 pm

Hi,

I would like to know how to say the following sentences in Japanese.

Because I have a test coming up, ~

1) I need to stop watching television.

2) I need to stop wasting time.

もうすぐ試験がありますから、…

I'm guessing
テレビを見るのをやめなければなりません。 and 時間を無駄のをやめなければなりません。?

Thank you.

Ly2kutd1552 san,

1) テレビを見ることをやめる必要があります。
2) 時間を無駄にすることをやめる必要があります。

テレビを見るのをやめなければなりません。 means “I have to stop…”
時間を無駄のをやめなければなりません。mean also “I have to…”
試験ですか大変ですね。
頑張ってください。

ly2kutd1552さん、由紀先生、

I think now would be a good time for me to review the difference between こと and の.

I know that both are used for nominalising verbs. From my understanding, の is used to nominalise a verb when you need a noun referring to a specific instance of the action, while こと is used to create a noun referring to the action in general.

So I would think:-
テレビを見ることをやめなければなりません = I have to stop watching television (in general, e.g. because I spend too much time watching it).
テレビを見るのをやめなければなりません = I have to stop watching television (just for now, e.g. because it's time for bed).

Am I understanding it right?

よろしくおねがいします、
小狼

小狼さん、
I like studying English.
日本語 の 勉強 を する こと が 好きです。
日本語 の 勉強 を する の が 好きです。
As you know you can't say,
英語 の 勉強 を する が 好き です。
Particles, such as が, を and は don't like verbs before them.
So you have to change "日本語語の勉強をする" into a noun using "Koto" or "No".
In this case, "Koto" and "No" are interchangeable.
"Koto" sounds more formal than "No", and "Koto" is usually used in writing. Moreover,“no” indicates more personal thing, on the other hand “koto” can show more objectivity.
In most cases, "Koto" and "No" are interchangeable, but you can't put "No" which is for making a noun, before "Desu".
My hobby is listening to music.
私の趣味 は、 音楽 を きく こと です。
You can't say:
私の趣味 は、 音楽 を きく の です。
I hope it will help.
