Star Wars in Japanese?

Postby JohnFrost » September 26th, 2009 10:28 pm

I love watching animes in Japanese and trying to pick out the words and phrases I recognize, but it's difficult to pay attention to the subtitles in English and the japanese dialog at the same time. So, I thought maybe watching somethng I'm intimately familiar with might make it easier to follow the dialogue.

Unfortunately, my original trilogy Dvds only come with dubs in Spanish and French. Anybody know where I can get ahold of some good quality Star Wars DVDs in Japanese?

Amazon.co.jp sells it, but the DVDs are region 2, so you need a region 2 or region free dvd player.

Hmm, does anybody know what regions an Xbox 360 will play?
And, thanks for the link; I'd never heard of a Japanese Amazon.

If its a US once it will only play Region 1 DVD's.

One solution could be to play in on you're PC. Its not hard to find software online to change the region on a PC DVD drive.

The PS3 is not region coded for movies. I play Japanese movies all the time on my bf's PS3. I'm trying to stock up on those old favorites like Star Wars or Ghostbusters that I could practically quote by heart anyway and watch them in Japanese.

The Anniversary Edition of the movie Labyrinth has an unexpected Japanese voice track AND subtitles. And I can play it in my regular dvd player. Although we use the PS3 most of the time anyway.

A little off topic, but I picked up the Phantom Menace manga in a Japanese bookstore for $1. It's pretty easy to read since you already know the story.

Hey all. So did anyone get this? Do they have actual dubbing in japanese? I had some SW Laserdiscs from Japan and they only have the kana/kanji subtitles. Just curious if they actually have voice dubbing.

Download them from here http://www.opensubtitles.org/en/search2/sublanguageid-jpn/moviename-star+wars and watch star wars using VLC or MPHC on your computer and load the .srt file into vlc or mphc.

Cool. Thanks for the link. Haven't tried yet but I think they're subbed though...

That´s true, but there is a problem with Amazon.jp: they only sell to you if you have a japanese credit card. Thus it´s impossible for me (and most others, I assume) to order from them unless you have a Japanese friend kind enough to order them for you.

I'm fairly certain you do not need a Japanese credit card to order from Amazon.co.jp (they ship all over the world), so it should not be a problem :)
