Docomo is a Japanese cell phone company. You need an email address from one of the Japanese cell phone companies in order to use mixi and docomo is one of those companies. Softbank, AU and willcom are the other major companies. I'm afraid that without one of these email addresses, you won't be able to use mixi. They started doing this a couple of years ago to shut out spammers, but its main effect seems to be keeping out foreigners. Pretty frustrating. Fortunately, I got a mixi account before this rule was implemented.

If you want to find some Japanese people to speak to, myspace's Japan site might be a good alternative. You might also try Englishpod101.com's message board.

Zakojanai-san!

I also recommend myspace Japan you'll find alot of Japanese people to practice but I don't agree with Englishpod101 message board, it's empty and there's no one to practice Japanese there.

Here is a group I moderate in myspace for those people who are English speakers learning Japanese or Japanese speakers learning English.

Hi

Hi all,

Is it possible for me to get a mixi invite too? I moved to Japan about a month ago and would like to get to know some friends so that I can improve on my Japanese. Heard mixi is a good place to start...
My email address is ryan.desh[at]gmail.com
I have a softbank mobile, so I guess I can complete the registration process...

Thanks in advance...

Wow, this is still going on? I haven't even looked at my Mixi account in over a year or so. Same goes for the Facebook account I have. I guess I'm too busy in real life to keep up with these social networking sites.

My apologies to anyone who's emailed me and I haven't responded, now you know why.

It seems that Mixi has started requiring someone to also have a Japanese phone email as part of the registration process. That's too bad since the site is good for Japanese learning.

Is there another site out there that's good for learning Japanese and making new friends?

Have you tried lang-8? The whole setup is very similar to mixi, but unlike mixi the whole point of it is language exchange - you can write journal entries and native speakers will correct them :) There are also lots of groups where you can meet people! I recommend looking into it.

Sounds very interesting

Hi,

I'd be very interested in joining a japanese social network.
Mixi sounds very interesting.
Could anyone send me an invite?
I don't have a japanese cell, though. Can I still join it?

Native Brazilian Portuguese speaker if someone wants to practice.

Best! :)
Thomas
