INTRODUCTION
Rebecca: How many people are in your Japanese dinner party?
Naomi: なおみです。 (Naomi desu.)
Rebecca: Rebecca here. こんにちはお元気ですか。 (Kon'nichiwa o genki desu ka.)
Naomi: 元気です。よろしくお願いします、レベッカさん。 (Genki desu. yoroshiku onegaishimasu, Rebekka san.)
Rebecca: 今日もよろしくお願いします。 (Kyō mo yoroshiku onegaishimasu.)
Naomi: 今日のレッスンはすごく便利です。 (Kyō no ressun wa sugoku benri desu.)
Rebecca: That’s right. Today we are going to take a look at a lot of useful expressions that you can use in a shop or a restaurant. We are going to review counters and those こそあど (koso ado) words.
Naomi: これ、それ、あれ、どれ。 (Kore, sore, are, dore.)
Rebecca: From last lesson. So what’s happening in today’s dialogue, Naomi Sensei?
Naomi: 今日は、南さんと、ファブリツィオがラーメン屋に行きます。 (Kyō wa, Minami san to, Faburizio ga rāmen ya ni ikimasu.)
Rebecca: Okay so today 南 (Minami) and ファブリツィオ (Faburizio) are going to a Ramen restaurant.
Naomi: それから注文をします。 (Sorekara chūmon o shimasu.) They are going to order some food.
Rebecca: 今日の会話に誰がいますか。 (Kyō no kaiwa ni dare ga imasu ka.) So who is appearing in today’s conversation?
Naomi: 店員さんと南夏見さんとファブリツィオさんです。店員さんは、スタッフかな。 (Ten'in san to Minami Natsumi san to Faburizio sandesu. Ten'in san wa, sutaffu ka na.)
Rebecca: Yeah I think in Japanese, you use 店員さん (ten'in san) to refer to anyone who works at – a chef at restaurant.
Naomi: Yes.
Rebecca: Right. Well we tend to make a distinction in English. So we say waiter or…
Naomi: Okay.
Rebecca: Cook or something.
Naomi: Okay, so it could be cook or it could be waiter or waitress. ですね (desu ne) waiter, 夏見 (Natsumi) and ファブリツィォ (Faburitsu~i~o) are talking.
Rebecca: Right, and again we will be listening to them speak polite Japanese.
Naomi: そうです。 (Sō desu.)
Rebecca: Let’s listen to the dialogue.

ファブリツィオ: うーん。野菜ラーメンを 下さい。それから、フランスの ブルゴーニ

white wine from Burgundy?
店員: すみませんが、ワインは ちょっと。
Waiter: Sumimasen ga, wain wa chotto.
WAITER: I'm sorry, but… wine is...
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Naomi: レベッカさん、ラーメン屋は英語で何ですか。(Rebekka san, rāmen ya wa eigo de nan desu ka.) How would you translate ラーメン屋 (rāmen ya) in English?
Rebecca: I guess we would say a Ramen restaurant but Ramen is really casual, isn’t it? And a restaurant, to me that sounds quite formal but Ramen, it’s not really McDonald’s. Isn’t it but it is fast food – fast casual cheap place. So Ramen restaurant.
Naomi: Ramen place, Ramen shop.
Rebecca: Ramen place yeah.
Naomi: なるほど。レベッカさんは、ラーメン屋へ行きますか。 (Naruhodo. Rebekka san wa, rāmen ya e ikimasu ka.) Do you often go to Ramen shop?
Rebecca: Well I like Ramen but I don’t often go. It’s very salty.
Naomi: そうですね。 (Sō desu ne.)
Rebecca: ちょっとヘルシーじゃないですね。(Chotto herushī janai desu ne.) It’s not very healthy.
Naomi: ヘルシーじゃないです。全然ヘルシーじゃないですね。 (Herushī janai desu. Zenzen herushī janai desu ne.)
Rebecca: Actually what I really love about Ramen. I mean I like Ramen but I really love the side dish that you get with it, sometimes Jiaozi.
Naomi: Jiaozi 餃子ね (gyōza ne). Chinese Dumplings?
Rebecca: Pot stickers. Yeah I know that they are from China. So technically maybe they are not Japanese food but I think they are my favorite food to eat in Japan.
Naomi: そうですね。(Sō desu ne.) Ramen is Chinese food but I think our Ramen and Chinese Ramen are a bit different.
Rebecca:Yeah like the Japanese take on Ramen.
Naomi: そうですね。 (Sō desu ne.)
Rebecca: それから、普通、ラーメン屋にワインはありますか。 (Sorekara, futsū, rāmen ya ni wain wa arimasu ka.) They don’t usually serve wine at Ramen places right?
Naomi: そうですね。ないですね。 (Sō desu ne. Nai desu ne.)
Rebecca: So what would they serve?
Naomi: 生ビール。 (Nama bīru.)
Rebecca: 生ビール (Nama bīru) I think the way the waiter said no is very Japanese.
Naomi: あーすみませんが、ワインはちょっと。 (Ā sumimasen ga, wain wa chotto.) Yeah I agree. I think that’s a typical Japanese way.
Rebecca: Yeah literally what he is saying is sorry, wine is a bit umm…
Naomi: そうですね。 (Sō desu ne.) This is the way we say no without actually saying no.
Rebecca: Right. I am sure most of our listeners know what Ramen is, it’s noodles right.
Naomi: はい、そうです。 (Hai, sō desu.)
Rebecca: So you know, like Instant Ramen, instant noodles, wonderful Japanese invention.
Naomi: そうですね。 (Sō desu ne.)
Rebecca: But of course the noodles that you get at Ramen shops are not instant but instant noodles came from Ramen.

Rebecca: In today’s dialogue, there are some expressions which would come in handy at a shop or a restaurant. Let’s have a closer look at them.
Naomi: こちらへどうぞ (kochira e dōzo)
Rebecca: This way please.
Naomi: こちら (kochira)
Rebecca: This way.
Naomi: へ (e)
Rebecca: Direction particle. Have a look at the Nihongo Dojo lesson #23.
Naomi: どうぞ (dōzo)
Rebecca: Please and for more on the use of Dojo, please look at Nihongo Dojo lesson 10. こちら (Kochira) is one of those こそあど (koso ado) words.
Naomi: そうですね。 (Sō desu ne.) これ (Kore) is desk and こちら (Kochira) means this way. そうですね (Sō desu ne) or this person or here in a plight situation.
Rebecca: So when you hear the way to say こちらへどうぞ (Kochira e dōzo) imagine him or her sort of holding out their hand and saying, this way please.
Naomi: そうでうね。 (Sōdeu ne.) And that way please. Please go over there, あちらへどうぞ。 (Achira e dōzo.)
Rebecca: Let’s look at another sentence from today’s dialogue.

Lesson focus

Naomi: ワインはありますか。 (Wain wa arimasu ka.)
Rebecca: Do you have wine?
Naomi: すみませんが、ワインはちょっと。 (Sumimasen ga, wain wa chotto.)
Rebecca: I am sorry, we don’t have any. In a previous lesson, lesson #58, we looked at the grammar structure. Something があります (ga arimasu) or something がいます (ga imasu). The particle ga can be replaced with the particle wa in a negative or a yes/no question like we see here wine はありますか (wa arimasu ka). So the original sentence Naomi Sensei was wine.
Naomi: ワインがあります。 (Wain ga arimasu.)
Rebecca: And then we make that into a question and it becomes ワインはありますか (Wain wa arimasu ka) and we are kind of emphasizing the wine.
Naomi: そうですね。 (Sō desu ne.)
Rebecca:And the second sentence is すみませんが、ワインはちょっと (sumimasen ga, wain wa chotto). We covered this before. The literal translation means I am sorry but wine is a little そうですね (sō desu ne) and it’s the way. It is polite way of saying, no we don’t have any wine.
Naomi: So if I am a customer and you are a shop clerk, 餃子はありますか (gyōza wa arimasu ka), what would you say?
Rebecca: If we didn’t have 餃子 (gyōza), well I tilt my head to one side, look very apologetic and say 餃子はちょっと (gyōza wa chotto). So it’s a very useful phrase. If you want to say no but you don’t want to be rude, you say すみません (sumimasen). Sorry それはちょっと (sore wa chotto). So let’s look at today’s grammar.
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Rebecca:Today’s grammar focuses on counters and this is really, really important. It’s in the review track. There is a lot of great stuff in this. So be sure to check it out and instead what we are going to do in the grammar section today is look at a function. How to order in a restaurant. This is also going to be really useful because dining out in Tokyo is very cheap. It’s not like compared to where I come from. So if you come here, you are going to be doing it a lot and it will be very useful. So Naomi Sensei, can you show us how?
Naomi: 生ビールをひとつください。 (Nama bīru o hitotsu kudasai.) I would like to introduce counters for dinner object up to three.
Rebecca: Okay. So how would you say one?
Naomi: 一つ (hitotsu)
Rebecca: Two
Naomi: 二つ (futatsu)
Rebecca: Three
Naomi: 三つ (mittsu)
Rebecca: 一つ、二つ、三つ (Hitotsu, futatsu, mittsu) right. So how would you use this in a sentence?
Naomi: If you want some beer, ビールをください (bīru o kudasai) right.
Rebecca: Give me some beer. Please may I have some beer?
Naomi: そうですね。 (Sō desu ne.) If you want to have one beer, you would say ビールを一つください (bīru o hitotsu kudasai). Put number before ください (kudasai).
Rebecca: I see. So if I wanted to order two beers, that would be…
Naomi: ビールを二つください (Bīru o futatsu kudasai)
Rebecca: And three beers?
Naomi: ビールを三つください (Bīru o mittsu kudasai)
Rebecca: I see. Now there is another way to say this. Isn’t there? Not using をください (O kudasai) we use another word.
Naomi: You mean お願いします (onegaishimasu).
Rebecca: Yeah, yeah that’s right.
Naomi: そうですね。(Sō desu ne.) It works in the same way.ビールを一つお願いします。 (Bīru o hitotsu onegaishimasu.)
Rebecca: Please give me one beer.
Naomi: そうですね。 (Sō desu ne.) One beer please. ビールを二つお願いします。 (Bīru o futatsu onegaishimasu.)
Rebecca:Two beers please.
Naomi: 三つお願いします。 (Mittsu onegaishimasu.)
Rebecca: Three beers please.
Naomi: はい。(Hai.) I think をください (o kudasai) and をお願いします (o onegaishimasu) are same kind of nuance. Both are plight expressions.
Rebecca: So we could use either of them?
Naomi: はい。 (Hai.)
Rebecca: Whichever one is easiest to remember. Well Naomi Sensei, what happens if I don’t want to drink beer? How do I order water?
Naomi: そうですよね。 (Sō desu yo ne.) If you are a minor, you can’t drink beer.
Rebecca:That’s right and if you are under 20 in Japan, you are a minor.
Naomi: そうですね。水をください。 (Sō desu ne. Mizu o kudasai.)
Rebecca: Please may I have some water.
Naomi: そうですね。 (Sō desu ne.) 水 (Mizu) is water.
Rebecca: Okay.
Naomi: Or 水をお願いします (mizu o onegaishimasu) or 水を一つお願いします (Mizu o hitotsu onegaishimasu).
Rebecca: May I have one water.
Naomi: はい。ラーメンを一つお願いします。 (Hai. Rāmen o hitotsu onegaishimasu.)
Rebecca: One bowl of Ramen please.
Naomi: そうですね。 (Sō desu ne.)
Rebecca: What about おにぎりを三つください (onigiri o mittsu kudasai)?
Naomi: すごい。(Sugoi.) Are you that hungry?
Rebecca: Three rice bowls.
Naomi: すごい。 (Sugoi.)

Outro

Rebecca: I think that’s all the time we have got today.
Naomi: じゃあまた。 (Jā mata.)
Rebecca: See you next time.
DIALOGUE
店員: いらっしゃい!何人ですか。
Waiter: (Irasshai! Nan-nin desu ka.)
南 夏見: 二人です。
Minami: (Futaridesu.)
店員: こちらへ どうぞ。ご注文は?
Waiter: (Kochira e dōzo. Go-chūmon wa?)
南 夏見: あ、生ビールを 一つ 下さい。それから、ラーメン 一つと おにぎり
三つ お願いします。ファブリツィオは?
Minami: (A, sei bīru o hitotsu kudasai. Sorekara, rāmen hitotsu to onigiri mittsu onegaishimasu. Faburizio wa?)
ファブリツィオ: うーん。野菜ラーメンを 下さい。それから、フランスの ブルゴーニ
ュの 白ワインは ありますか。
Fabrizio: U ̄n. Yasai rāmen o kudasai. Sorekara, Furansu no burugōni ~yu no shiro wain wa arimasu ka.
店員: すみませんが、ワインは ちょっと。
Waiter: (Sumimasen ga, wain wa chotto.)
