Which would be the more correct way of doing my name? By translating the characters or by how it is commonly pronounced?

ALVIN translations from spelling:
アルヴィン aruvuin a lu vu ēn (stumbling, sounds weird)
アルビン arubin a lu bē n (still stumbling, still sounds odd)

ALVIN Asians repeating what I say comes out as:
アオベン aoben a-ow ben (no “L”, v becomes b, most common spoken)

Generically, is it better to go with how it's pronounced and I will more readily recognize, or to try to match spelling which often sounds weird and I may not answer to?

Alvin

Alvinさん
こんにちは。 :)
Actually it is up to you.
We don’t have any rules for katakana writing at all.
Some words are already decided though.
You can choose one yourself.
If I give you recommendation, that would beアルヴィン.

Katakana only cares about sound. Whatever relationship we find between Katakana (and, for that matter, Hiragana) and English letters is only incidental through how English letters often create those same sounds. There is no deeper relationship to warrant emphasizing English spelling at the expense of pronunciation.

I'd go with アオベン

Besides, it's your name; of course you want the one that you most easily recognize.

My name is Taylor Crain, so what would it be in Japanese?

Thanks in advance!

Hi ,
Thank you for posting.

I think your name, Taylor Crain, is pronounced "テイラー・クレイン(Teirā Kurein)" in Japanese.
Let me add that R and L are not distinguished clearly in Japanese

Hope this helps you.
