Fields, names and surnames.

Postby neala897_511501 » April 14th, 2016 11:57 pm

I noticed that 田 kanji is used in great amount of surnames. But I can not remember it being used for first names. Can it be used as last part for personal name?

san,
konnichiwa.
Thank you for your question.
The kanji can be used in the first names however, it is rare.

Big thanks for answer. But I means something more specifically. Like can surname Wada ( 和田) be used as first name?

和田 should be a family name.

由紀先生, neala897さん,

Would it be fair to say that, not only 田, but a lot of other kanji that also refer to places (e.g. 山, 川, 森, 島, 谷) are generally more common in family names than given names? Somehow that makes sense to me, given that 家 can mean either '(my) home' or '(my) family' - there seems to be a connection between place and family, maybe?

小狼 さん、
Konnichiwa. :)
田 山, 川, 森, 島, 谷 are often used in family names however, I am not sure about the origin.
People have those kanji in their family names might have lived around those places.
