Never confuse Migi/Hidari again!

Postby yuriythebest1720 » February 13th, 2011 1:54 pm

Right, for the longest time now I could remember migi/hidari but I often forgot which one was left and which one was right, and the answer is to think "Hmm.,." (H=hidari, m=migi), which corresponds to the english left/right. So, any time you forget, just think "Hmm...".

Everyone has a different way to remember it. The way that finally worked for me after many attempts was that "migi" has a 'g' in it, just like "right."

It's always interesting to see what mnemonics people use. For me, it's the number of syllables. Another word for 'left' is 'sinistral', which has three syllables like hidari, while another word for 'right' is 'dextral', which has two syllables like migi :)

I always tell my martial arts students: "there is an R in 'hidari', but to confuse us, it's 'left' and not 'right'". Oddly enough, this mnemonic actually helps. :)

I just like the word "migi" better than "hidari", and being right handed makes me connect that easily. Migi just feels right (pun intended) :)

For remembering the Kanji, I have one silly tip (based on traditions from India (I think?)):
Migi - Right - 右 - You put your right hand to your mouth 口 when you eat.
Hidari - Left - 左 - You use your left hand to clean your butt (and エ almost looks like a butt crack).

:P I know it's silly, but it sticks!

I rotate the entire character 90-degrees in my mind (either direction)...

Hidari (左): the radical ⼯ becomes an H, standing for "Hidari".

Migi (右): the radical ⼝ "mouth" stays almost the same (no matter how you turn it), and can stand for migi (i.e. Mouth for Migi). It also resembles the katakana RO for Right (Roll to the Right).
