goroawase question

Postby michaelamont7375 » November 24th, 2015 8:10 pm

1100 = 百獣の王

Here's a random question that I've been racking my brain with. How does 1100 break down into ひゃくじゅうのおう?I get the 110 = ひゃくじゅう part, but I don't get how のおう equals the final "0". And, of course, I understand how it means "King of Beasts". Odd question, I know, but I had a debate over it with somebody over the weekend.

Thanks,
マイケル

マイケルさん、
こんにちは。
That must be 百獣の王.
Actually more than 100 animals exist in this world however, this is like an idiom so 百 (100) is used.
獣 means ‘animals.’
王 means ‘king’.
So that means ‘the king of beasts.’

由紀さん

ありがとうございました!

That makes sense. In terms of pronouncing the actual numbers, would it break down like this:

100 = ひゃく
10 = じゅう
(extra zero) = あう

Which comes out to be 1100, or ひゃくじゅうのあう?

Like I've seen 700 pronounced ななお or 900 pronounced ここのおう。Is it the same thing in this case? Sorry to belabor the question; just one of those mysteries of the world that I'm trying to unravel :-) Just seem cool how the King of Beasts can actually be written as a number.

michaelamont7375 マイケルさん、
こんにちは。
Have you learnt a general counter、 つ?
We introduce that from 1 to 10 because we hardly use it for big numbers and switch it to 個.

一 ひと
二 ふた
三 み
四 よ
五 いつ
六 む
七 なな
八 や
九 ここの
十 とお
11こ じゅういっこ
12こ じゅうにこ
13 じゅうさんこ

However, actually we have that general for big numbers.
二十 はた
三十 みそ
四十 よそ
五十 いそ
六十 むそ
七十 ななそ
八十 やそ
九十 ここのそ
百 もも
二百 ふたほ
三百 みほ
四百 よほ
五百 いほ
六百 むほ
七百 ななほ
八百 やほ
九百 ここのほ
千 ち
万 よろず

I think that pun you mentioned comes from them above.
