Question About Having A Shaved Head In Japan

Postby questfordolma3207 » February 27th, 2014 5:48 am

Hello,

Once again, "The woman with a million questions" has returned for another, well...question.

This time around the question pertains to women with shaved heads for which I happen to have myself.

It's a long story, but let's just say, I got fed up with dealing with hair a few years ago and decided it was best to just shave it off. It's down to about 1/16 of an inch, so it's not as though I am Yul Brenner, but I am pretty close.

What I have been wondering is if anyone has any advice for women such as myself travelling to Japan?

Generally, my head is covered 24 hours 7 days a week with beanies (usually always black in color) which has been what I planned on doing when in Japan.

Culturally, I am not sure if this presents any potential problems. However, wigs or growing my hair back in time for my trip just won't work.

So, I guess it is reassurance I am seeking that it will be alright for beanies to be my heads' constant companion even in a restaurant?

Any insights and tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Hello questfordolma3207 san,
Really short hair lady is rare in Japan.
However, I think it’s ok you put on a beanies at restaurants or any public places.
Nevertheless, you could be asked to take off that at temples or shrines.

Hi Yuki san!

It was my intention to visit different shrines, so hopefully, if I am required to take off my beloved beanies it won't be too cold outside, and that's very helpful information to know.

Thank you again. :)

Sincerely,
Valerie
