Where Do You Put Your Purse In A Restaurant?

Postby questfordolma3207 » February 25th, 2014 12:27 pm

Hi Everyone,

It's me again with another question pertaining to restaurant etiquette.

Being a woman, I suffer "the curse of the purse."

In America when eating at a restaurant I usually have put my purse on the floor against my foot, or depending on the seating arrangement it has been placed on an empty chair next to me.

If it's a booth I usually have it on the seat at my side.

If it's a bar my purse would again be on the floor in front of my feet.

It's my understanding that in Japan it's not very polite to put your purse on the floor.

So, can someone tell me what the different options are?

Is it alright to hang the purse on a chair (assuming there is a knob of some kind in which to do so)?

Or is it best to place it on a chair that is at the table even if the only other chair at your table is opposite of you?

And, what about situations where you are at a bar style eatery where there may be no seats to put your purse on at all?

Sorry, for seeming so anal retentive, but I've always been a stickler for details and end up having a zillion questions about things as a result, and this is one of them.

Since becoming a "wallet in the pocket" man before my trip is an option not available to me, could someone please give me some pointers on what do as a woman with "the curse of the purse"?

Thank you so much!

Valerie

Hello Valerie san,
You should not put your purse on a floor.
Japanese people care about hygiene so a purse putted on a floor is dirty for them.
You can put your purse on a chair next to you.
Chairs have baskets underneath them or boxed type chairs have a space for bags and purses under the seats at some restaurants.
If you have a big bag, waitresses or waiters should ask you about it and they will prepare somewhere for you basically.

I remember when I was in Japan was out with a woman friend, she'd always put her purse behind her back in the chair. My purse was always small and had a strap so I usually kept it on.
