It's my understanding that if you are in a restaurant it is considered rude to blow your nose, and it's best to do so in the restroom.
However, what if it's just a runny nose you have through the entire meal from perhaps eating something hot (as in tempurature wise) or on the spicy side (or anything for that matter) where taking a restroom break only offers a few minutes of relief, and then it's return of the runny nose?
I gather eating in the bathroon is not an option.
It's important to me to do things right and not offend people, but what do you do if your nose is running throughout an entire meal?
Is it alright to wipe ones nose while at a table, but if you want or need to actually blow your nose you go to the restroom?
Speaking of runny noses and blowing noses...
Other than restaurants, is it ok to whip out a kleanex if your nose is running to wipe it away or blow it if necessary?
questfordolma3207 san, I really understand your concern. It is alright to wipe ones nose while at a table but blowing nose should be avoided. However, it depends on how formal the meal is. If you have a meal with your friends, they can understand your situation and close their eyes. If it is a really formal mea…., I suggest you should go to bathroom. Yuki 由紀 Team JapanesePod101.com
Fortunately, if I make it to Japan, there are no formal dinners planned or likely to occur, so it's a relief to know it is ok to simply wipe away the liquid that tends to start draining from my nose when eating.
