When to use 申しfor self introduction

Postby wildjasmin296741 » March 11th, 2013 4:54 pm

Hi, Everyone,

I'm a newbie for Japanese.

I have seen two ways of self introduction: (私は)Jasmine です, and Jasmine と申します. I wonder what's the difference between them.

Thanks in advance.

こんにちは、ジャスミンさん。

Simply put ジャスミンと申します is more polite/formal than ジャスミンです。

It's using keigo (敬語). Specifically 申す is the humble form of 言う (to say). You use the humble form when talking about yourself. The various forms are:

言う plain form
おっしゃる respectful form (尊敬語)
申す humble form (謙譲語)
言います polite form (丁寧語)

Hope that makes some sense.
