INTRODUCTION
Naomi: こんにちは、ナオミです。
Chris: Chris here. Upper Intermediate series Season 5 Lesson 7 “Follow This Fundamental Japanese Rule”
このレッスンでは何を勉強しますか?
Naomi: 5つのsuffix を復習します。「〜的」「〜風(ふう)」「〜性」「〜系」それから「〜化」。
Chris: 今回のダイアログは誰と誰の会話ですか?
Naomi: お医者さんと、白雪(しらゆき)さんという女の人の会話です。白雪さんは具合が悪いみたいですね。病院での会話なので、体の症状を表すのに便利な表現がたくさん出てきます。
Chris: In this lesson, you'll learn the usage of the suffixes “〜的”,”〜風(ふう)”, “〜性”, “〜系” and “〜化”. This conversation is between a doctor and Ms. Shirayuki, who appears to be is sick. Because this is a conversation between a doctor and a patient, you'll hear a lot of vocab and phrases describing various symptoms.
Naomi: では、聞いてみましょう。
DIALOGUE
Naomi: 今度は英語と一緒に聞いてみましょう。
白雪: おいしそう〜。いただきまーす!
Naomi: This looks yummy. Don't mind if I do.
白雪: あれ?いたたたたた……。
Huh? Ow, ow!
(病院で)
看護士: 白雪さん、白雪さん姫、どうぞお入りください。
Naomi: Miss White, Snow White, please come in.
医師: どうしましたか?
Naomi: What seems to be the trouble?
白雪: お昼を食べてからお腹の調子が悪いんです。
Naomi: Since I ate lunch, my stomach hasn't been feeling very good.
医師: 下痢(げり)と腹痛ですか。他に症状はありますか。
Naomi:You have diarrhea and stomach pain? Do you have any other symptoms?
医師: 例えば、吐き気がするとか。熱があるとか。
Naomi: For example, you feel nauseous, or you have a fever, etcetera.
白雪: 熱は分かりません。ここに来るまでに、何回も吐いてしまいました。
Naomi: I don't know whether I have a fever. Before I came here, I threw up any number of times.
白雪: 胃がまだムカムカします。寒気もしますし、めまいもします。
Naomi: My stomach still feels queasy. I also have chills, and I feel dizzy too.
医師: 典型的な食中毒のようですが、ちょっと調べてみましょう。
Naomi: It seems like a typical case of food poisoning, but let's have a little look.
医師: やっぱり、食あたりですか?なんだか、目がチカチカしてきたんですが……。
Naomi: So it IS food poisoning? My vision has somehow started flickering...
医師: 毒性のあるものを食べたと思うんです。何を食べましたか?
Naomi: I think you've eaten something poisonous. What did you eat?
白雪: このリンゴを一口だけ食べたんです。
Naomi: I just ate one bite of this apple.
医師:これは、どこで手に入れたんですか?
Naomi: :Where did you get this?
白雪:占い師風(ふう)のおばあさんにもらいました。
Naomi: :An old woman who looked like a fortune-teller gave it to me.
医師:専門的なことは、調べてみないと分かりませんが、リン系の毒を食べてしまったのかもしれません。
Naomi: :We won't know technicalities until we do tests, but you may have ingested a phosphoric poison.
医師: これから体調が悪化する可能性がありますので、念のため、すぐに入院してください。
Naomi: There is the possibility that your condition may worsen from now on, so just to be on the safe side, please go to the hospital.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Chris: この女の人は、Family name が白雪で、下の名前が姫なんですか?
Naomi: そうです。白雪姫さんですね。続けて読むと、白雪姫 -Snow whiteと同じ名前ですね。ダイアログでは、その白雪姫さんが、リンゴを食べて、食中毒になってしまったみたいです。
Chris: けっこうひどい症状でしたが、大丈夫ですかね~。
Naomi: ねー。心配ですよね〜。大丈夫だといいですね。
Chris:「食中毒」といえば、2010年に日本で大きな食中毒のニュースがありましたね。
Naomi: ああ~。O111ですね。
Chris: Right, E. Coli. 子供とか年寄りとかが、亡くなったんですよね。
Naomi: そう。知っているリスナーの方もいると思うんですが、韓国料理の「ユッケ」という「生の牛肉」を食べる料理は、日本でもとっも人気があるんですね。それを食べて、食中毒になって、確か4人亡くなったんですよね。
Chris: 直美先生は、ユッケは好きですか?
Naomi: 嫌いじゃないですね〜。おいしいとも思います。でも、疲れていたり体調が悪いときには食べないほうがいい……というのは、よく聞いたことはありました。
クリスさんはどうですか?ユッケは好きですか?
Chris: うん。好きですねえ。はい。もう生の肉でも、全然。
Naomi: 抵抗なく。
Chris: そうですね。
Naomi: 食べられるんですね。
Chris: ええ、大好き。
Naomi: 食中毒はどうですか?食中毒になったことはありますか?
Chris: ありますね。
Naomi: おお
Chris: サラダ食べたことで。
Naomi: サラダ?生の肉じゃなくて、サラダで食中毒になったんですか?
Chris: そうなんです。ええ。なんか一度、普段あまり行きたくないレストラン***(ピー音)に一度行ったことがあるんですけど、友達に無理して呼ばれたんですが、あんまりこのチェーン店みたいなところを信用できないから、ステーキを避けてサラダを食べようと思って。
Naomi: あ、わざわざサラダを頼んだんですね。
Chris: そうです。
Naomi: ステーキハウスで。
Chris: はい。で、かなり量のあるサラダが出てきて、まあ、ちょっと無理して食べたんですけど、帰ったらやっぱり食中毒。けっこうひどい症状だったんですね。
Naomi:
Chris: Let's take a look at the vocabulary for this lesson.

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Chris: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Naomi: 今回のダイアログに出てきた表現を確認しましょう。
Chris: 最初の表現は?
Naomi: 手に入れる
Chris: 直訳は "to put something in one's hand" ですね。
自然な英語だと、 "to obtain something" とか、"to get something" ですね
Naomi: 例えば「100万円を手に入れた。」
Chris: I got 1 million yen.
Naomi: クリスさんは最近手に入れたものはあります?
Chris: あ、ナオミ先生。この「手に入れる」っていうのは、お金で買って手に入るという感じでも大丈夫ですか?
Naomi: あ、はいはい。使いますよ。
Chris: あ、そうですか。そしたらあの、最近、エアキーボードっていうのを……。
Naomi: エアキー……?
Chris: (笑)エアーオルガンっていうんですかね。
Naomi: へ〜
Chris: 空気で音が出るようなオルガンなんですけど。
Naomi: ほお〜、面白ーい。
Chris: 3000円で買いました。
Naomi: (笑)いいですね。
Chris: はい。次は何ですか?
Naomi: 念のため
Chris: "just in case" or "just to be safe"
Naomi:「念」にはいろいろな意味があるのですが、ここでは「注意」という意味で使われています。ですから、「念のため」は「注意のため」とか「注意するため」という意味ですね。
似た表現に「念には念を入れる」"to be extra cautious" なんていう表現もあります。
Chris: 念のため、英語を入れますね(笑)
“念のため” literally means "for being careful". It's similar to the English expressions "just in case" or "just to be safe".
I feel nauseous since I drank too much last night."
Naomi: ああ、それは大変ですね。これは、「吐き気がする」という意味のムカムカですね。
Chris: 2つ目のOnomatopoiea は?
Naomi: チカチカ。これは、明かりがついたり消えたりしている状態をいいます。
Chris: Christmas treeのライトとかですね~。
Naomi: そうですね。あと、ときどき、ずっと暗いところにいたのに、急に明るいところに出ると、まぶしくてよく見えなくなりますよね。あれも「チカチカ」と表現することができます。
Chris: ああ、「目がチカチカする」"I see stars" とかも言いますね。
Naomi: はい。
Chris: So チカチカ describes flickering or flashing lights. In this dialogue, the patient complains that she can't see things very well, as if the lights were flickering.
Naomi: 擬音語、擬態語(onomatopoeia)のシリーズでは、これ以外にもたくさん擬音語・擬態語を紹介してありますので、ぜひ、そちらのシリーズも聞いてみてください。
では、文法に入りましょう。

Lesson focus

Naomi: このレッスンでは 的、風(ふう)、性、系、化の5つのSuffixが出てきましたね。
Chris: 全部名詞の後につきますよね。
Naomi: はい。
All of those suffixes come after a noun, don't they?.
Naomi: そうですね。この5つのうち、性・系・化はそんなに難しくないので、レッスンノートを読めば大丈夫だと思います。このオーディオでは、的と風(ふう)の違いを紹介します。
Chris: 「日本的」と「日本風」の違い……とかですね?
Naomi: そうですね。リスナーの皆さんは分かりますか?
例えば、「日本的な考え方。」Japanese way of thinking と「日本風の庭」Japanese style garden.
もし分からなくても、このレッスンの最後までには分かるようになりますので、安心してください。
Chris: では「的」から勉強しましょう。
Naomi: はい。「的」は名詞を、”〜な”形容詞に変えます。
「的」の意味は「そのような様子の」とか「それらしい」とか「まさにそうだ」です。
だから、「日本的」だと、「日本らしい」とか「日本のような」「まさに日本」という意味です。例えば、健康的な人なら「健康である様子の人」とか「まさに健康な人」という意味です。
そのほかに、「的」には「~に関係する」とか「そういう性質がある」という意味があります。
Chris: 「専門的」とか「基本的」とかよく聞きますよね。
Naomi: そうですね。例えば、専門的なことなら「専門に関係すること」ですし、「基本的」なら「基本に関係すること」ということです。
Chris: 英語だと、「的」は"[something]-type","[something]-ic", "[something]-ical", "[something]-ive", "[something]-cal"とかに近いと思います。
Naomi: そうですね。ちょっと訳すのが難しいですよね。
Chris: そうですよね。
Naomi: 例えば、基本が “base” で基本的が “basic”ということですよね。
Chris: そのほかにも、経済的 ”economic”、近代的 “modern”、一般的 “general”、現実的 “realistic” など、「的」を使った単語はたくさんありますね。
Naomi: ありますね。PDFに、少しですがリストを載せておきました。どれもよく使うものなので、覚えてしまってください。
Naomi:
But not exactly Japan.
Naomi: あ〜(笑) いい例ですね。『Sayuri』とか『Last Samurai』とか、まあ、あれは日本風ですけど、日本じゃないですからね。
Chris: そういうことですね。
Naomi: ま、ハリウッドですから、まあしょうがないですけど。
じゃあ、ダイアログの文を見てみましょう。「占い師風のおばあさんに見てもらいました」
Chris: 「占い師(fortune teller)風のおばあさん」というのは、「占い師のように見えるおばあさん」という意味ですね。
Naomi: その通りです。
Chris: So this sentence means "an old woman who looked like a fortune-teller gave it to me."
Naomi: 本当に占い師かどうかっていうのは分からないんですよね。「占い師のように見える人からリンゴをもらったよ」と白雪姫さんは言っていました。
では、まとめましょう。「的」は特徴"characteristics"とか関係"relation"を表します。この単語は、見かけよりも内面とか考え方を言うときに使われると思います。
例えば、"現実的な考え方"-"realistic way of thinking" "専門的な内容"-"technical content".
Chris: Got it. So 的 is used a lot when talking about the internal aspects of something.
Naomi: それに対して、「風(ふう)」というのは「~のように見える」ということですから、見かけを言うときに使うことが多いと思います。
例えば、「ヨーロッパ風の建物」"a European-style building"とか「ヤクザ風の男」(笑) "a man who looks like a yakuza gangster"とか。
Chris: On the other hand, 風(ふう) is used more when talking about the external characteristics of something, things you can see.
Naomi: じゃ、クイズをしましょう。今から私が、2つの文章を言います。正しいのはどちらですか?
1.私は、春樹がモデル的な美女と歩いているのを見た。
2.私は、春樹がモデル風の美女と歩いているのを見た。
Chris:(wait for 5 sec.)正しいのは、2ですよね。「モデル風の美女」。
Naomi: そうです。「私は、春樹がモデル風の美女と歩いているのを見た」
Chris: I saw Haruki walking down the street with a beautiful woman who looked like a model.
Naomi: 大丈夫でしょうか?ちょっと難しかったですかね。
今回のダイアログに出てきた「〜的」「〜風(ふう)」「〜性」「〜系」「〜化」はとても基本的なsuffix なので、PDFを読んで、必ず意味を確認しておいてください。

Outro

Chris: じゃ、このレッスンはこの辺で。
Naomi: さようなら。
