A young girl and her parents are talking while watching the news on T.V. In this dialogue, you'll learn some environment-related vocab words often heard on the news. |

| 娘: 人を襲ったら殺されちゃうのに、どうして、クマは人を襲っちゃったんだろう。 |
| 妻: クマがそんなことわかるはずないでしょ。襲われた人こそ、かわいそうよ。 |
| 夫: クマは山に食料がないから、人の住むところに、食べ物を探しに来るんだろうね。人を恐れていればこそ、襲うらしいよ。 |
| アナウンサー: 各地でクマの被害が続いています。何が原因なのか、森大学の熊谷教授にインタビューをしてみました。 |
| 熊谷: クマが住宅地に出没するのは、クマのえさが山にほとんどないからなんですよ。 |

| Jessi: How would a bear understand that? It's the person who was attacked who's to be pitied. |

| Jessi: Bears come and look for food where people live because there's no food in the mountains, I suppose. |
| 夫: 人を恐れていればこそ、襲うらしいよ。 |
| Jessi: It's because they're scared of humans that they attack them, apparently. |

| Jessi: In various places, bears continue to cause damage. |
| アナウンサー: 何が原因なのか、森大学の熊谷教授にインタビューをしてみました。 |
| Jessi: : In order to attempt to discover the cause of this, we interviewed Professor Kumagai from Forest University. |
| 熊谷: クマが住宅地に出没するのは、クマのえさが山にほとんどないからなんですよ。 |
| Jessi: The reason that bears appear in residential districts is because there is hardly any food for them in the mountains. |
| 熊谷: 温暖化や酸性雨のせいで、木が枯れているのも原因の一つと言えますね。 |
| Jessi: We can also point to the withering of trees caused by global warming and acid rain as one cause of this. |
| アナウンサー: つまり人間こそが全ての原因を作った…。 |
| Jessi: So basically, human beings themselves are the originators of all of these causes... |
| 熊谷: そう。森が再生しないと、本当の意味での問題は解決しないでしょうね。 |
| Jessi: That's right. If the forests don't come back to life, then the true problem will probably not be solved. |
| 妻: クマも食料不足で大変なのね…。 |
| Jessi: So bears are suffering from food shortages too… |
| 妻: でも、怖いわ。 |
| Jessi: But it's frightening. |
| 妻: あの公園、サダコの小学校から目と鼻の先でしょ。 |
| Jessi: That park is just a stone's throw away from Sadako's elementary school. |

| Jessi: I'll be fine. I have anti-bear spray. Look. |

| Naomi: クマに襲われるというのは、もちろん恐ろしいことなんですけど、その原因を作ったのも人間なんだと思うと、いろいろなことを考えさせられるニュースですよね。 |
| Jessi: そうですね。温暖化 “global warming” や酸性雨 “acid rain” が原因だったんですね。 |
| Naomi: ね〜。まあ、この他にもいろいろな原因があるみたいです。例えば、人間が木を切って森をなくしてしまったこととか、あとは、クマにとって自分でえさを探すより、人間の捨てるゴミを食べたほうが簡単だし、おいしいですよね(笑) そういう原因もあって、クマが住宅地に食料を探しに来るんだそうですね。 |
| Jessi: ああ、なるほど〜。でも、野生のクマは危ないですから、山の近くに住んでいる人は心配ですね。 |
| Naomi: そうですよね。テディベアとはわけが違いますからね(笑) うん。そういえば、ダイアログの中で、娘さんが「クマ用のスプレーを持っている」なんて言っていましたね。 |
| Jessi: 勇気がありますね。すごいですね。 |
| Naomi: 本当に、使う機会がないといいですね。ジェシーさんはクマには会ったことは……ないですよね？ |
| Jessi: ありがたいことに、ないですね！ナオミ先生は？ |
| Naomi: 私もないですね。動物園で見たことがあるくらいかな。あ、でも、アメリカにいたときに、クマの毛皮のカーペット？を見たことがあります(笑） |

| Naomi: はい。「先」というのは「前」という意味ですから「目と鼻の前」という意味です(笑) |
| Jessi: うーん、目と鼻の前？ "in front of one's eyes and nose？" 意味がちょっとわかりません(笑) |
| Naomi: そうですよね。自分の目と鼻の前はとても近いですよね。ですから、「目と鼻の先」というのは、「とても近いところ」という意味なんです。 |
| Jessi: なるほど～。So this idiom 目と鼻の先 is used to express a very short distance. |

| Naomi: でも「こそ」を入れると、「人間が」という部分が強くなるんです。 |
| Jessi: So this particle こそ emphasizes the preceding word, phrase or clause. |
| Naomi: 「こそ」を英語にすると何ですかね？ |
| Jessi: うーん、"it's -that-"とか "for sure"とか "in particular"ですね。 |
| この「こそ」は「こちらこそ」"same here"の「こそ」と一緒ですね？ |
| Naomi: すごい！その通りです。例えば、誰かに「ありがとう」と言われたときに、「こちらこそ、ありがとうございました」って言いますよね。それは、「あなたじゃなくて、私たちこそ、こちらこそ『ありがとう』って言わなくちゃいけないんです」という意味なんです。 |
| Jessi: So the literal translation of こちらこそありがとうございました is "It's me who should thank you." Of course it means "No, Thank you." 他の例文もお願いします。 |
| Naomi: 今こそ、行動するときだ。 |
| Jessi: "Now is the time for action." |
| Naomi: 過去じゃなくて、未来じゃなくて、「今」行動するんだ、という意味ですね。 |
| この「こそ」は「ば conditional」と一緒に使って、理由を表すこともできます。 |
| Jessi: 例文お願いします。 |
| Naomi: クマは人を恐れていればこそ、襲うらしいよ。 |
| Jessi: "It's -because- bears are scared of humans that they attack them, apparently." |
| Naomi: 「クマは人を恐れているから襲う」と同じ意味です。でも、「ば〜こそ」を使うと、理由をもっと強調することができます。 |
| Jessi: ば−こそ is used to emphasize a reason. It's similar to "it is only because" or "it is precisely because" in English. |
| Naomi: じゃあ、練習しましょう。誰かが「すみません」と言いました。その人は悪くありません。本当は皆さんのほうが悪いんです。皆さんも謝らなくてはいけないですよね。 |
| Jessi: 日本ではそういうこと、よくありますね(笑) |
| Naomi: よくありますね(笑) そういうときに、何て言いますか？ |
| Jessi: 「こちらこそ、すみません」とか、「私こそ、すみません」ですね。 |
| Naomi: そうですね。まあ、日本人は自分が悪くなくて、相手が悪いって知っていても、わざと自分が謝ることがあります。 |

| Naomi: それで、相手に気づかせようとしているんですよね～。 |
| じゃ、つぎの問題です。親は子供を叱りますね。それは、心配しているから、ですよね。じゃあ、これを「ば〜こそ」を使って言ってみてください。 |

| Naomi: 親は子供を心配しているから、叱るんですよね。 |
| Jessi: "Parents scold their kids because they're worried about them." |
| ナオミ先生、「ば〜こそ」を使って言うと？ |
| Naomi: 親は子供を心配していればこそ、叱る。 |
| Jessi: "It's only because parents are worried about their kids that they scold them." |
| Naomi: 「こそ」といえば、ビートルズの歌に「All you need is love」っていう歌がありますよね。 |
| Jessi: ああ、ありますね。(song〜♪) |
| Naomi: あれの日本語のタイトルは、「愛こそは全て」です。 |
| Jessi: へー。あ、じゃあ「愛こそあなたの必要なもの」ではないんですね(笑) |
| Naomi: ねえ。直訳なら「All you need is love」は「愛こそあなたの必要なもの」ですけど、Youというの は日本人はあまり使わないので、省略したんじゃないかな、と思いますね。 |
