INTRODUCTION
Naomi: こんにちは、ナオミです。
Chris: Chris, here. “Make Sure you do a Decent Job of Reading Those Japanese Instructions”
Chris: 今回の会話は、誰と誰の会話なんですか？
Naomi: 春樹(はるき)さんと志保(しほ)さんというカップルの会話ですね。2人は一緒に住んでいるみたいですね。
Chris: 何について話してるんですか？
Naomi: 春樹さんが買ってしまった「あるもの」について話しています。今回は、宇宙に関する単語がたくさん出てきますよ。
Chris: このレッスンの文法ポイントは？
Naomi: 「ろく」です。「ろくに食事をしない」と「ろくな食事をしない」の違いですね。
Chris: In this lesson, you'll learn the usage of [ろくに〜ない] and [ろくな〜ない].　This conversation is between a man named Haruki and his girlfriend, Shiho, who appear to be living together. It looks like Haruki has just bought "something" and they are discussing it.
In the dialogue, you'll hear a lot of vocabulary words related to outer space.
Naomi: では聞いてみましょう。
DIALOGUE
News caster: 60年に一度、地球に接近するILL彗星（すいせい）ですが、現在最も地球に接近しており、今夜は望遠鏡を使わなくてもはっきり見えると思われます。
Haruki: ジャーン！買っちゃった。
Shiho: え？
Haruki: 値段もろくに見ずに買ったら、高くてさ。なんと10万以上したんだよ、この天体望遠鏡。
Shiho: 宇宙にろくに興味もないくせに、どうしてそんなに高いのを買ったの？
Haruki: インテリアにもなると思ってさ。このフォルムいいだろ。
あ、それから、これ、おまけでもらった。
Shiho: なあに？
Haruki: 宇宙飛行士と人工衛星のフィギュアと宇宙食。
うらやましいだろ。
Shiho: もう！ろくなもの買わないんだから。
第一、結婚式のために貯金するって、昨日(きのう)約束したばかりじゃん。
Haruki: カリカリしても、ろくなことがないぞ。
さ、組み立てるぞ。
(sounds of setting up)
よしできた。見てみよう。あれ？真っ暗で何も見えない……。
Shiho: 説明書もろくに読まずに組み立てるからだよ。
Haruki: おっかしいな〜。この望遠鏡なら、月のクレーターや山が見えるって言ってたのに……。
Shiho: 不良品を買わされたんじゃない？いいカモにされたんだよ！
Naomi: 今度は英語の訳と一緒に聞いてみましょう。
News caster: 60年に一度、地球に接近するILL彗星（すいせい）ですが、現在最も地球に接近しており、今夜は望遠鏡を使わなくてもはっきり見えると思われます。
Chris: The ILL comet, which draws near the Earth once every sixty years, is currently at the point where it is closest to the Earth. It's thought that even without using a telescope this evening you'll be able to see it clearly.
Haruki: ジャーン！買っちゃった。
Chris: Ta-da! I bought it!
Shiho: え？
Chris: What?
Haruki: 値段もろくに見ずに買ったら、高くてさ。なんと10万以上したんだよ、この天体望遠鏡。
Chris: I bought it without even looking at the price properly, and it was expensive. Believe it or not, this astronomical telescope cost over 100,000 yen!
Shiho: 宇宙にろくに興味もないくせに、どうしてそんなに高いのを買ったの？
Chris: Why did you buy such an expensive one, even though you're not all that interested in outer space?
Haruki: インテリアにもなると思ってさ。このフォルムいいだろ。
Chris: I thought it would make a nice decoration too, you know. It's got a nice shape, right?
Harukiあ、それから、これ、おまけでもらった。
Chris: Oh, and also, I got this as a freebie.
Shiho: なあに？
Chris: What is it?
Haruki: 宇宙飛行士と人工衛星のフィギュアと宇宙食。
Chris: A figurine of an astronaut and a man-made satellite and some space food.
Haruki: うらやましいだろ。
Chris: Jealous, aren't you.
Shiho: もう！ろくなもの買わないんだから。
Chris: For goodness' sake! You just buy garbage!
Shiho: 第一、結婚式のために貯金するって、昨日約束したばかりじゃん。
Chris: First off, we only just made a promise yesterday that we'd start saving for our wedding, didn't we?
Haruki: カリカリしても、ろくなことがないぞ。
Chris: Getting all touchy won't do you any good.
Haruki: さ、組み立てるぞ。
Chris: OK, I'm going to set it up.
Haruki: よしできた。見てみよう。あれ？真っ暗で何も見えない……。
Chris: Okay, done! Let's take a look. Huh? It's pitch black. I can't see a thing...
Shiho: 説明書もろくに読まずに組み立てるからだよ。
Chris: That's because you set it up without even reading the instructions properly.
Haruki: おっかしいな〜。この望遠鏡なら、月のクレーターや山が見えるって言ってたのに……。
Chris: That's weird. Even though the guy said with this telescope you could see the moon's craters and mountains and stuff...
Shiho: 不良品を買わされたんじゃない？いいカモにされたんだよ！
Chris: He sold you a defective product. You got well and truly suckered!
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Chris: 春樹くんと志保さんって、Lesson 6に出てきた人たちですね？
Naomi: おー、よく覚えていましたね～。中学校くらいから付き合い始めて、一度分かれてしまったんですけど、元のさやに戻ったんでしたよね。
Chris: うん。よく、覚えています。実はあのレッスンで「もとさや」というフレーズを初めて聞きましたから。
Naomi: あ〜、そうだったんですか。
今回の話は、2人が結婚式のために、がんばって貯金しよう……って約束してたのに、春樹くんは天体望遠鏡を買ってしまった……というお話でした。
ところで、クリスさんは宇宙に興味はありますか？
Chris: うーん、宇宙……ですか？まあ、普通にあると思いますね、はい。
Naomi: ちょっとまあ、いきなり変な質問でしたよね(笑) 。
Chris: いえいえ(笑)
Naomi: 例えば、日食（にっしょく/solar eclipse）や月食(げっしょく/lunar eclipse)を見たり、彗星を見たりしますか？
Chris: うーん、そうですね。最近はあまりしてないんですけども、昔はもちろん、子供の頃はすごい楽しくて。
Naomi: 望遠鏡で、見てたの？
Chris: 見てましたね。
Naomi: お〜すごい！
Chris: はい。80年代にCarl Saganというastronomer?
Naomi: 天文学者（てんもんがくしゃ）
Chris: 天文学者の有名な人がいまして、テレビ番組をアナウンスしてたんですよ。それがもう、10年とか、けっこう長くやってて、見るのすごく楽しかったんですね。
Naomi: あ、なるほどね〜。そういう番組があれば、宇宙に興味を持ちますよね。
Chris: 持ちますね〜。
Naomi: いいですね。
Chris: そういえば、「彗星(すいせい)」"comet"って、おもしろい字ですね。「彗」という漢字は見たことなかったですね。
Naomi: あ〜、そうですね。私もこれ、書けないですね。これは常用漢字じゃないんです。「彗星」という漢字以外ではあまり使われない漢字だと思いますね。
Chris: ああ、そうなんですね。じゃ、覚える必要はないですね。
Naomi: まあ、ないと思いますね(笑)
Chris: ああ、よかったです。
Naomi: じゃ、単語を確認していきましょう。

Chris: なんと？(笑) どういうときに使いますか？
Naomi: 相手を驚かせるようなこととか、びっくりするようなニュースを伝える前に言いますね。
Chris: So it's often used before telling a surprising fact?
Naomi: そうですね。英語だと、びっくりするようなニュースを伝える前には、なんて言うんですか？
Chris: まあ、いろいろあるとは思いますが、"believe it or not..."ですかね。
Naomi: ああ、なるほどね。「信じようと信じまいと」みたいな。
Chris: そうそう。はい。
Naomi: なるほど。ダイアログでは、春樹さんが、「なんと10万以上したんだよ、この望遠鏡」("Believe it or not, this astronomical telescope cost over 100,000 yen!")と言っていました。まあ、10万円の天体望遠鏡、高いですね。
Chris: 高いですね〜。確かに。じゃ、次の表現は何ですか？
Naomi: カモ
Chris: カモ？ "duck"?
Naomi: そうです。「カモ」には鳥のDuck という意味だけじゃなくて、「だまされやすい人」とか「利用しやすい人」という意味もあるんです。
Chris: うーん、なるほど～。英語だと、"an easy target," とか"an easy mark" とか "a sucker"とか、まあ"a sitting duck"とかですかね。
Naomi: あ、"a sitting duck"って言うんだ。
Chris: はい。あります。
Naomi: あ〜同じですね(笑)
Chris: そうですね(笑)
Naomi: 例えば、「カモにする」は、「だます」と同じような意味ですね。
Chris: じゃ、「悪い人は、若い大学生をカモにした」とか言えますか？
Naomi: 言えます言えます。若い大学生をだましたってことですよね？じゃ、passive formの「だまされる」はなんて言うと思いますか？
Chris: だまされる……はPassive だから、「カモにされる」ですか？
Naomi: おお、そのとおりです。ダイアログでも「いいカモにされたんだよ」"You got well and truly suckered!" なんて言っていましたよね。
Chris: うん。ナオミ先生も、悪い人にカモにされないように気を付けてくださいね(笑)
Naomi: 気を付けます。クリスさんは、若い女の人をカモにしないようにしてください(笑)
Chris: 分かりました(笑)
Naomi: じゃ、文法に入りましょう。
Naomi: このレッスンでは、「ろくに～ない」と「ろくな～ない」の違いを勉強します。
例えば、「エミはろくに食事をしない」と「エミはろくな食事をしない」の違いです。
Chris: 形は似てますが、意味は違いますね。
Naomi: そうですよね。リスナーの皆さんは違いが分かりますかね。
今日のレッスンはこれを勉強していきましょう。
Chris: ナオミ先生、そもそも「ろくに」と「ろくな」の「ろく」は何ですか？
Naomi: おお！いい質問ですね。
「ろく」は「正常」とか「まとも」という意味ですね。これは、否定文の中でしか使えないです。
Chris: So this word "ろく" itself means "decent" "good" "satisfactory"or "proper". It's only used in negative expressions.
Naomi: 「ろくに」というのは、「に」がありますから「副詞 "adverb"」なんですね。なので、「ろくに」の後ろには動詞の否定形がきます。
例えば、「知らない」は"don't know"ですけど、「ろくに知らない」なら？
Chris: "don't know properly" or "doesn't know properly"
Naomi: 「仕事しない」は "don't work"ですけど、「ろくに仕事しない」なら？
Chris: "doesn't work sufficiently" or "don't work sufficiently"
「ろくに～ない」は英語だと、"insufficiently" "not properly"という意味ですね。
Naomi: そうです。では、例文です。「ジョンは仕事もろくにしないで、文句ばかり言っている」
Chris: "John doesn't even do his job properly, but is constantly complaining."
Naomi: 最悪な人ですね(笑)
Chris: そうですね。
Naomi: では、次に、「ろくな～ない」を勉強します。
Chris: 「ろくな」は[なadjective] ですね。
Naomi: そうです。「な」がありますからね、後ろにはすぐ「名詞 ”Noun”」が続きます。形は？
Chris 「ろくな」＋[Noun]＋「じゃない」or「ろくな」＋[Noun]＋「ではありません」
Naomi: 例えば「ろくな人じゃない」
Chris: "not a decent person"
Naomi: 「ろくなホテルじゃない」
Chris: "not a decent hotel"
Naomi: じゃ、例文読みましょう。
女性を殴るなんて、ろくな男じゃない。早く別れたほうがいい。
Chris: "A man who hits a woman cannot be a decent man.　You should break up with him as soon as possible."
まあほんと、ろくな人じゃないですよね。暴力は絶対ダメですね。別れたほうがいいです。
Naomi: そうですね(笑)
[ろくな]＋[Noun]の後ろには、動詞が来ることもあるんです。
例えば、「ろくな人」は"decent person"ですが、「ろくな人と会わない」なら？
Chris: "I don't meet any decent people."
Naomi: 「ろくなこと」は？
Chris: "Decent thing" or "good thing"
Naomi: なので、「ろくなことを言わない」なら？
Chris: "doesn't say anything good" "don't say anything good"　じゃ、例文お願いします。
Naomi: はい。「あの年老いた政治家はろくなことを言わない」
Chris: "That old politician doesn't say anything good."
Naomi: 「ろくなことを言わない」というのは「いいことを言わない」「ちゃんとしたことを言わない」という意味ですよね？
じゃあクリスさん、「ろくに言わない」との違いは分かりますか？
Chris: 「ろくに～ない」は"not sufficiently" "not properly"という意味ですから、「あんまり話さない」という意味ですかね。
Naomi: そうです。意味が変わっちゃいますよね。
では、復習クイズをしましょう。エミは体に悪いファーストフードばかり食べていて、全然野菜を食べようとしないんですね。さて、そんなときどう言いますか？
1）エミはろくに食事をしない。
2）エミはろくな食事をしない。
Naomi: (Wait for 5sec)じゃあ、クリスさん、どうでしょうね。
Chris: そういうときは、２の「エミはろくな食事をしない」"Emi doesn't eat decent meals"ですね。
Naomi: そうです。１の「エミはろくに食事をしない」は「食事をほとんど食べない」という意味ですからね。
Chris: Right. No.1 sentence means "Emi hardly eats meals"
