INTRODUCTION
Naomi: こんにちはナオミです。
Kat: Kat here. “Fate Works In Mysterious Ways in Japan”
Kat: 今回の文法のポイントは何ですか?
Naomi:「に」「さ」「わ」です。3つの助詞を勉強します
Kat: 会話はレッスン1からの続きですね。
Naomi: そうです。レッスン1は、お母さんと大学生の息子さんが話していましたね。このレッスン2では、息子さんが家に帰って、お父さんとお母さんと話をしてるようです。天災、自然災害が起きてしまったようです。今回のダイアログでは、いろいろな自然災害の言葉が出てきます。
Kat: So in this lesson, you'll learn the usage of three particles,に, さ and わ. This lesson's dialogue is a continuation from the previous lesson, in which you'll recall our university student Yuta came back home to his parents' house. In this lesson's dialogue, you'll also come across some vocabulary words related to natural disasters.
Naomi: では聞いてみましょう。
DIALOGUE
Naomi: 今度は、英語の訳と一緒に聞いてみましょう。
優太: ただいま。
Kat: I'm home.
お父さん: あれ?どうしたんだ、優太?ILL島に行ったんじゃないのか?
Kat: Huh? What happened, Yūta? Weren't you going to ILL Island?
優太: そのつもりだったんだけど……。
Kat: That was the plan, but…
優太: 旅行の前日に親知らずを抜いたらさ、血は止まらないわ、顔は腫れるわ、熱は出るわ……。それで、出発できなかったんだよ。
Kat: The day before my trip I had my wisdom teeth taken out, you know? And then it wouldn't stop bleeding, my face swelled up, I got a fever... So because of all that I couldn't leave.
お父さん: 別の日の飛行機に変えられただろうに。
Kat: Surely you could have changed your flight to a different day.
優太: 安い航空券だからさ、他の便への変更はできなくてさ、航空券はパアだよ。
Kat: It was a cheap ticket, you know, so I couldn't change it to a different flight. The ticket's a dead loss.
優太: ま、飛行機しか予約してなかったのは、不幸中の幸いだったけど。
Kat: Well anyway, the fact that I only reserved the flight is some small mercy.
お父さん: 若いんだから、またそのうち行けるさ。
Kat: You're still young, so you'll be able to go again eventually, you know.
お母さん: お父さん大変!
Kat: Dad, it's terrible!
お母さん: ILL島付近の海底火山が噴火して大地震だって。
Kat: It says an undersea volcano near ILL Island has erupted and caused a huge earthquake.
お母さん: 津波も起きたみたいで……。あら?優太、どうしたの?ILL島行かなかったの?
Kat: It looks like there's also been a tsunami, and... Huh? Yūta, what happened? Didn't you go to ILL Island?
優太: 親知らずを抜いたら、熱が出ちゃってさ。行くのやめたんだ。
Kat: When I had my wisdom teeth taken out I got a fever, you see, so I ended up not going.
お母さん: よかったー。塞翁が馬ね。
Kat:Thank goodness! Fate works in mysterious ways.
優太: さいおうがうま?
Kat: Fate works in mysterious ways?
お父さん: お前……まさか、大学生なのに意味知らないのか?
Kat: What? Don't tell me even though you're a university student you don't know what that means?
お父さん: 「災いがいつ福になるか、逆に、福がいつ災いのもとになるか分からない」っていう意味だよ。
お父さん: It means that disaster can sometimes bring good fortune, and conversely you don't know whether good fortune might sometimes be the seed of disaster.
お父さん: 中学校で習っただろうに。
Kat: I thought you learned that in middle school.
優太: あー。聞いたことはあるよ。
Kat: Ah... I've heard it before.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Naomi: 結局、優太君は、親知らずのせいで、海外旅行にいけなかったんですね。
Kat: でも、そのおかげで助かってよかったですね。ダイアログでは「塞翁が馬 (さいおう が うま)」という、ちょっと難しいことわざを使っていましたね。
Naomi: そうですね。これは日本だと、中学校で習う中国のことわざです。英語だと、これはどういうふうに訳しますか?
Kat: It's translated as "Fate works in mysterious ways" in the dialogue.
Naomi: なるほどね。「塞翁が馬」という言葉の意味は、「『さい』というおじいさんの馬」という意味なんです(笑)
Kat: Grandpa Sai's horse?(笑)
Naomi: そうそう。
Kat: これだけだと、全然意味がわからないですよね(笑)
Naomi: そう、全然わからないですよね。
Kat: 皆さま(笑)
Naomi: 何のことですかって感じですよね。これは中国のお話なんです。こんなお話です。
むかしむかし、あるところに、おじいさんが住んでいました。おじいさんは馬を飼っていたんですが、ある日、その馬が逃げてしまいました。
Kat: ああ、それは残念ですね。
Naomi: 残念ですよね。でも、少したって、その逃げた馬がとてもいい馬を連れて帰ってきました。
Kat: それは、ラッキーですね。
Naomi: ですよね。でも、ある日その馬に乗っていたおじいさんの息子が、馬から落ちて、足を折ってしまったんです。
Kat: Ouch!
Naomi: でもその後、近くで戦争が始まったんです。おじいさんの息子は、足をケガしていたから、戦争に行かないですみました。
Kat: 死なずにすんだ……ということですね。
Naomi: そうなんです。で、このお話で言おうとしているのは、「いいことだと思っても、それがいつ悪いことが起きるきっかけになるか分からない。逆に、悪いことだと思っても、それはいいことが起こる始まりなのかもしれないよ」ということなんですね。
Kat: I see. So this ancient Chinese story teaches that good can come out of misfortune, and conversely misfortune can come out of good fortune. Tricky fortune, can't trust it!(laugh)
Naomi: リスナーの皆さんは、「塞翁が馬」だと思える体験をしたことがありますか?あればぜひ、コメントらんで私たちに教えてください。

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Naomi: では、ダイアログに出てきた表現を勉強しましょう。
Kat: 最初の表現は?
Naomi: パア
Kat:パア?(笑)
Naomi: 「全部ダメになる」という意味の「パア」です。
Kat: パア has several meanings, but in this dialogue, パア means "nothing" or "naught" (as in "come to naught") or "disappear completely". パア is often used to describe situations in which money or goods you once had have completely disappeared, or in which all effort towards something eventually comes to nothing.
Naomi: 例えば「1万ドルがぱあだ。」
Kat: "10,000 dollars down the drain."
Naomi: あとは「今までの努力がぱあになった」
Kat: "All my efforts went to waste." これとは別に、「パッパラパー」とか「クルクルパー」とか言いませんか?(笑)
Naomi: よく知ってますね~(笑)
Kat: いえいえ(笑)
Naomi: これは、「バカ」という意味ですよね(笑)「頭の中が空っぽ」という意味なんでしょうね。まあ、子供とか、よく使いますね。ふざけて言う人はいるかもしれませんね。大人でもね。あまり、あの、まあ、大人の人は使うことはおすすめはできないですけど(笑)知っておくのは、いいと思います。
Kat: じゃ、次はなんですか。
Naomi: 不幸中の幸い
Kat: "A small mercy amidst some misfortune".
Naomi: これは、「悪いことが起きたんだけれども、まだいいほうだ。最悪ではない。もっとひどいことになった可能性があった」という意味なんですね。
Kat: The situation could be worse, or when something good happens out of something bad...みたいなニュアンスですね?
Naomi: そうですね。
Kat: It's a bit like the phrase "every cloud has a silver lining" in English, I think.
Naomi: 例えば「事故で車がダメになってしまった。でも、誰もケガをしなかったのは不幸中の幸いだ」。
Kat: "I had an accident and my car was a write-off, but luckily nobody was injured."
Naomi:
Naomi: あ〜、それはうれしいですね。
Kat: 再会、再会ができて、不幸中の幸いかなと思った(笑)
Naomi: あ、学会には遅刻してしまったけれども……
Kat: そう。ま、結局、先生には怒られたんですけど、その友達には会えたと(笑)
Naomi: あ、それは、不幸中の幸いですね。
Kat: 不幸中の…と、言えますかね?
Naomi: はい、言えると思います。

Lesson focus

Kat: In this grammar section, you'll learn the usage of the sentence-ending particles に and さ. You'll also learn the sentence structure わ.
Naomi: まず、sentence ending particle の「に」から勉強しましょう。
「に」は「かわいそうだな~」という気持ちや、後悔するような気持ちを表すことができるんですね。形は「だろう」とか「でしょう」の後につけて、「〜だろうに」「〜でしょうに」と使います。
Kat: 例文をお願いします。
Naomi: どうして彼と結婚するの?もっといい人がいるだろうに。
Kat: "Why are you marrying him? There are almost certainly other better men out there."
Naomi: (笑)すごい文章ですね。これは「かわいそう」という気持ちが入っていますね。
Kat: So, This に at the end of だろうに expresses the speaker's sympathy.
Naomi: もう一つ、じゃあ例文読みますね。「あのとき右に曲がっていれば、事故に遭わなかっただろうに」
Kat: "If I had only turned right then, I wouldn't have had an accident..."
This に indicates the speaker's 悔しい feeling - their feeling of regret and/or disappointment. Naomi: じゃ、次はsentence ending particle の「さ」。これは「よ」と同じような意味ですね。カジュアルな場面で使いますね。男の人が使うことが多いかなーとは思いますね。「さ」は文章の最後につけます。
Kat: じゃ、例文をお願いします。
Naomi: 若いんだから、また行けるさ。
Kat: "You're still young, so you'll be able to go again eventually, you know." さ expresses the speaker's feeling of certainty, so it's often translated as "you know", "you see" and so on. It can sound a bit unnatural in the English translation, and is actually sometimes left out completely, but it's very natural in Japanese.
Naomi: 文章の終わりだけじゃなくて、文の真ん中も入れたりしますね。相手の注意を引くために使うんだと思います。これは、女の人も男の人も、会話の中でよく使います。
Kat: So, this さ can also appear between segments to draw the listening party's attention to what you're saying. This usage is used by both male and female speakers in informal speech.
Naomi: 今回のダイアログには、こんな文がありました。「安い航空券だからさ、他の便への変更はできなくてさ、航空券はパアだよ 」
Kat: "It was a cheap ticket, you know, so I couldn't change it to a different flight. The ticket's a dead loss." Be careful, though, as you might have heard when Naomi-sensei was speaking that sentence, overusing さ after every single phrase in Japanese can sound immature at best and annoying at worst - like saying "like" too much in English! Like, I went to the store. Like, I bought some stuff. Just like that!
Naomi: そうですね〜。では、最後に「〜わ」の形を勉強しましょう。これは、理由を説明する「〜し、〜し」と一緒です。「〜し」と違うのは、「〜わ」には驚いている気持ちが入っているんですね。
Kat: The structure -wa -wa presents examples or reasons with a sense of astonishment. 例文をお願いします。
Naomi: 家賃は高いわ、部屋はせまいわ、駅から遠いわ。このアパートから引越したい。
Kat: "The rent is expensive, the room is small, it's far from the train station - I want to move out from this apartment."
Naomi: ああ、使い“すぎ”ないようにね。
Kat: そうですね、はい。

Outro

Naomi: はい。リスナーの皆さんも、ぜひ、今回の表現使ってみてください。では、このレッスンはこの辺で。
Kat: それじゃあまた。
Naomi: さようなら。
