INTRODUCTION
Naomi: こんにちは、ナオミです。
Chris: Chris here. “In Your Opinion, are Ugly Japanese Vegetables Safe to Eat?” 今回の会話はテレビ番組ですね?
Naomi: はい。ILL弁当というお弁当屋さんを経営する岸社長に、アナウンサーがインタビューしています。
会社の経営の話をしているので、経営や経済関係の単語がたくさん出てきます。
Chris: 難しそうですねぇ。でも、新聞やテレビを理解するには、必要な単語ばかりですよね。
Naomi: そうですね。
Chris: 今回はどんな文法を勉強するんですか?
Naomi: 「~と思われます」とか「言うまでもなく」とか「というよりは」とか、自分の意見を言うときに便利な表現を勉強します。
Chris: In this lesson, you'll learn some useful expressions you can use when stating your opinion. This lesson's conversation is between a T.V. announcer and the CEO of a chain that sells boxed lunches called ILL Bento. They're talking about the management of the company, so we'll hear a lot of vocabulary words related to business and the economy.
Naomi: では、ダイアログを聞いてください。
DIALOGUE
Naomi: 今度は英語の訳と一緒に聞いてみましょう。
アナウンサー: 今回は、ILL弁当の岸社長にお話を伺います。
Chris: Today we're going to hear from the president of ILL Boxed Lunches, Mr. Kishi.
岸: よろしくお願いします。
Chris: Thank you.
アナウンサー: 景気低迷のなか、ILL弁当は、右肩上がりに業績を伸ばしているようですね。
Chris: In the midst of a sluggish economy, it seems that ILL Boxed Lunches is showing prolific growth in its performance.
岸: おかげさまで、価格競争の激しいなかですが、何とか来年には200店目をオープンできると思われます。
Chris: Fortunately, even though we're fighting an extremely fierce price war, one way or another, next year we hope to be able to open our two hundredth shop.
アナウンサー: 成功の秘けつは何でしょうか。
Chris: What is the secret of your success?
岸: 簡単に言えば、品質管理と市場調査です。
Chris: To put it simply, quality control and market research.
岸: 「安かろう悪かろう」の時代はもう過ぎ、消費者は安くて安全で、おいしいものを求めているんです。
Chris: The days of "You get what you pay for" are over. Consumers are demanding products that are cheap, safe, and tasty.
岸: アナウンサー: なるほど。
Chris: I see.
岸: 消費者の健康志向が高まってきており、その傾向がこれからどんどん強くなることは言うまでもありません。
Chris: Consumers are becoming more health conscious, and of course this trend will only become more and more pronounced from here on out.
岸: 弊社(弊社)の弁当は、野菜中心のヘルシーなものですから、時代のニーズをつかんだことが成功の秘けつと思われます。
Chris: Our company's boxed lunches are healthy, as they're mainly composed of vegetables, so you could say that the secret of our success is the fact that we grasped the needs of the times.
アナウンサー: 市場には出せない虫食いの野菜や見た目の悪い野菜を、農家から安く買っていると聞きましたが。
Chris: I heard that you buy worm-eaten vegetables…ugly vegetables that can't be sold commercially and so on directly from the farmer's, cheap?
岸: それはビジネスというよりは、むしろ「もったいない」という考えから始めたことなんです。
Chris: That's something that grew more out of the idea of avoiding wastefulness rather than from a business concept.
岸: よく考えてみてください。虫食いの野菜はきちんと洗えば食べられます。
Chris: Think about it. If you wash a worm-eaten vegetable properly, you can eat it.
岸: むしろ虫も食わない野菜のほうが危ないと思いませんか?
Chris: Rather, don't you think that a vegetable that even the worms won't touch is more dangerous?
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Naomi: ダイアログの最後に、「むしろ虫も食わない野菜のほうが危ない」って言っていましたけど、これは、うちの母がよ~く言いますね。
Chris:
Chris: なるほど~。
ダイアログに、「見た目の悪い野菜はマーケットに出せない」って言っていましたが、これは、聞いたことがあります。例えば「曲がったキュウリ」は売れないとか。
Naomi: ああ、よく聞きますね~。
Chris: まっすぐなほうがおいしいんですか?(笑)
Naomi: ああ(笑) 味は一緒だと思いますね~。でも、曲がったキュウリについて言えば、市場で売れないのには理由があるんですよ。
Chris: え、どんな理由ですか?
Naomi: キュウリって運ぶときに箱に入れるでしょ?
Chris: はい。
Naomi: だから、まっすぐのほうが運びやすいんです。曲がっていると、箱に入れるときに、こうぶつかったり、かさばったりする。だから、曲がったキュウリは市場では嫌われちゃうんです。
Chris: なるほどね~。納得しました。
Naomi: では、単語を見ていきましょう。
VOCAB LIST
Chris: Let's take a look at the vocabulary for this lesson.

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Naomi: では、このレッスンに出てきた表現を確認しましょう。
Chris: 最初の表現は何ですか?
Naomi: 右肩上がり
Chris: 右肩あがり? Right shoulder up??(笑)
Naomi: (笑)まあ、訳はそうなりますよね~。これは、グラフをちょっとイメージしてください。どんどん数が増えると、右に行くと、グラフがこう上がっていきますよね? 意味分かります?
Chris: あ~ 、So picture a graph that rises up to the right as the figures get bigger?
Naomi: そうそう。「右肩上がり」というのは、どんどん数が増えることを言います。
Chris: 「右肩上がり」は英語だと、まあ、 "growing,"とか "soaring" とか "ever-rising"ですね。
Naomi: そうです。
Chris: じゃあ、逆に「右肩下がり」とは言えますか?
Naomi: おお!よく知ってますね!(笑) どんどん数が減っていくことですね。「右肩下がり」
Chris: へー。So the opposite expression is 右肩下がり. This means "declining" or "shrinking".
じゃあ、次のフレーズは何ですか?
Naomi: 安かろう悪かろう
Chris: 「かろう」は何ですか?
Naomi: これは「だろう」と同じ意味です。あの、「かろう」は i-adjective の後ろについて、予想を表すんですね。
これは、Lesson 17のPDFに詳しく書いてありますので、絶対に読んでおいてください。
Chris: In the PDF of Lesson 17, there's a detailed write up about the usage of the auxiliary verb かろう, which indicates the speaker's conjecture.
Naomi: そうです。宿題でしたよね?
Chris: うん。じゃあ「安かろう悪かろう」の意味は、「安いだろう、悪いだろう」ですか?
Naomi: そのとおりですね。「安いということは、悪いものだろうなぁ」ということです。「安いものに良いものはない」という意味ですね。
Chris: ああ、そう。"if something is cheap, its quality will most likely be poor"ということですね。
Naomi: はい。
Chris: 英語のフレーズに、"you get what you pay for."というのがありますが、それと似ていますね、
Naomi: ああ、そうだと思いますね。すごく似てると思います。では、文法に入りましょう。

Lesson focus

Naomi: このレッスンでは、「思われる」や「言うまでもない」など、自分の意見を言うときに便利な表現を勉強します。
Chris: In this lesson, you'll learn useful expressions for stating your opinion, such as 思われる, 言うまでもない, and so on.
「思われる」は「思う」"to think" の [受け身 Passive form] ですよね。
Naomi: そうですね。でも、Passiveのニュアンスはあまりなくて、「私には~と思われる」という形で、自分の意見を表すことができる、というふうに覚えてください。クリスさん、英語だと、どういう訳になりますかね?
Chris: 「私には~と思われる」。まあ英語だと、"it seems... to me,"ですね。
Naomi: 例えば、私には、それは無駄だと思われる。
Chris: To me, it seems like a waste.
Naomi: 私には、それは自然だと思われる。
Chris: To me, it seems natural.
Naomi: 「私には~と思われる」というのは、「私は~と思う」という意味なんですね。ただ、「~思われる」を使うと、「自然にそうなるんだ」「自然にそう思うことができる」というニュアンスが入ります。
Chris: なるほど。
Naomi: つまり、「いろんな状況を見て、自然にそう思える」ということなので、「思う」よりは、「~と思う」よりは、客観的なニュアンスが強くなります。
Chris: うーん。So basically "私には~と思われる" sounds more objective than "私は~と思う".
Naomi: もちろん、「私には」は省略されることがよくあります。
Chris: ダイアログの例文お願いします。
Naomi: 何とか来年には200店目をオープンできると思われます。
Chris: "One way or another next year we hope to be able to open our 200th shop."
Naomi: では、問題です。皆さんは「今年は景気がよくなる」と思っています。これを「思われる」を使ってちょっと客観的な感じに言ってみてください。
(wait for 10sec)どうですか? クリスさん。
Chris: 今年は景気がよくなると思われる。"It seems that the economy will get better this year." ですね。
Naomi: そうですね。「~と思われる」だけじゃなくて、「ように思われる」という形もよく使いますので、その形も覚えておくといいと思います。
Chris: じゃ、次の文法ポイント「言うまでもない」を説明してください。
Naomi: はい。「~は言うまでもない」は「~は言う必要がない」とか「~は当たり前だ・当然だ」という意味なんですね。
これ、英語だとどう訳しますかね?
Chris: "it's needless to say that...", とか "it goes without saying that..."ですね。
Naomi: 例えば、留学するためには、お金は当然必要ですよね? これを「言うまでもない」を使って言うなら……。
Chris: 留学するのにお金が必要なのは、言うまでもない。
"It goes without saying that you need money to study abroad."
Naomi: こんなふうに言い換えることができるんですね。もう1つ例文を読みましょう。
タバコが健康に悪いのは言うまでもない。
Chris: "It goes without saying that smoking is bad for your health."
Naomi: タバコが健康に悪いのは当然ですよね。では、問題です。「健康」は大切です。これは当たり前ですよね。では、これを「言うまでもない」を使って、言ってみてください。
Chris: (wait for 10 sec) 健康が大切なのは言うまでもない。
"It goes without saying that health is important."
Naomi: おお、そのとおりです。
Chris: ナオミ先生、「言うまでもなく」という言い方もよく聞きますね。
Naomi: ああ、すごいいいポイントですね。「言うまでもない」は、文章の最後、終わりに来てますけど、副詞の形 "The adverbial form” の「言うまでもなく」は、文の真ん中に出てきます。
この「言うまでもなく」というのは、英語だと何ですかね?
Chris: うーん、”not to mention,"とか "let alone" とか"not to speak of"ですね。
Naomi: 「言うまでもなく」の例文や「~というよりは」の説明はPDFに載っていますので、ぜひ読んでおいてくださいね。
Chris: オーディオレッスンは言うまでもなく、PDFもきちんとチェックしたほうがいいと思われます。
Naomi: おお、すごい!「言うまでもなく」と「思われます」、今日の2つの文法ポイントを使ってくれたんですね。
Chris: はい。

Outro

Naomi: すばらしい! ありがとうございます。クリスさんが、うまくまとめてくれたので、このレッスンはここまで。
Chris: Go to Japanesepod101.com, and check out the PDF for more details.
Naomi: それじゃあ、また。
Chris: また次回。
