INTRODUCTION
Natsuko: こんにちは、なつこです。
Naomi: なおみです。
Chris: Chris here. I Cannot Agree with Your Japanese Opinion.
Naomi: このレッスン１９と次のレッスン２０では、就職活動 (job hunting) についての会話を勉強していきます。
Natsuko: 日本語で仕事を探すときに便利な表現やフレーズを紹介します。
Naomi: では、今回の会話について教えてください。
Natsuko: はい。そろそろ就職活動を始めなければならない大学生と、その両親が話しています。
Naomi: 親子の会話ですから、カジュアルに話してますよね。
Chris: This conversation is between a university student and his parents. He’s supposed to start thinking about job hunting soon, so his parents are discussing it with him. This conversation is in casual Japanese.
Natsuko: それでは、さっそく聞いてみましょう。
DIALOGUE
父:お前も、もう大学三年か。早いなぁ。
あと半年もしたら、就職活動を始める時期じゃないか。
将太:あー、まぁね。
母:大学３年の秋から就職活動なんて、早いわよねぇ。
ついこの前、大学入試が終わったと思ったのに。
大学の勉強や部活も忙しいだろうけど、今は就職難だから、がんばらないと！
将太:はいはい。。
父:なんか、気合が入ってないみたいだな。大丈夫か？
友達は、もう、企業研究したり、OB訪問したりしてるんじゃないか。
将太:そうだねぇ。俺も、一応やってるからさ、心配しなくていいよ。。。
じゃ、明日は早いから、俺、もう寝るからさ。お休み。。。
（部屋から出て行く音）
母:まさか・・・あの子「就職しない」・・・なんていうんじゃないでしょうね。
せっかく大学まで行ったのに、ニートにでもなったら、困るわ。
父:まさか。。。
だけど、今は雇用環境が悪化しているから、うかうかしてると、就職浪人することになりかねないぞ。
母:そうよ。
新卒でなんとか正社員として就職しないと、そのままフリーターになんてことになりかねないわ！
Natsuko: 次は、英語が入ります。
父:お前も、もう大学三年か。早いなぁ。
Chris: You're already in your third year of college. Time flies.
父:あと半年もしたら、就職活動を始める時期じゃないか。
Chris: In half a year, it'll be time to start the job-hunting process.
将太:あー、まぁね。
Chris: Uhhh, yeah.
母:大学３年の秋から就職活動なんて、早いわよねぇ。
Chris: Starting the job-hunting process in the fall of your third year of college - that's fast!
母:ついこの前、大学入試が終わったと思ったのに。
Chris: It feels like only recently you've finished your college entrance exams.
母:大学の勉強や部活も忙しいだろうけど、今は就職難だから、がんばらないと！
Chris: You must be busy with your college studies and extracurricular activities, but finding employment is difficult right now so you need to be persistent!
将太:はいはい。。
Chris: Yeah, yeah...
父:なんか、気合が入ってないみたいだな。大丈夫か？
Chris: You don't seem to be fired up about it. Are you okay?
父:友達は、もう、企業研究したり、OB訪問したりしてるんじゃないか。
Chris: Aren't your friends doing things like researching companies and listening to alumni company speakers?
将太:そうだねぇ。俺も、一応やってるからさ、心配しなくていいよ。。。
Chris: Yeah...I'm doing stuff too, so you don't have to worry...
将太:じゃ、明日は早いから、俺、もう寝るからさ。お休み。。。
Chris: Okay, I have an early start tomorrow, so I'm off to sleep. Good night.
（部屋から出て行く音）
(leaves the room)
母:まさか・・・あの子「就職しない」・・・なんていうんじゃないでしょうね。
Chris: Surely...he's not going to say "I'm not going to get a job," is he?
母:せっかく大学まで行ったのに、ニートにでもなったら、困るわ。
Chris: It would be a waste since he went all the way to university if he became a NEET. I'd be troubled.
父:まさか。。。
Chris: Surely not…
父:だけど、今は雇用環境が悪化しているから、うかうかしてると、就職浪人することになりかねないぞ。
Chris: but, now the employment situation is getting worse, so if you're lazy and not trying hard, then you might end up as a jobless university graduate.
母:そうよ。
Chris: That's right!
母:新卒でなんとか正社員として就職しないと、そのままフリーターになんてことになりかねないわ！
Chris: If you don't find a job as a full-time employee as a new graduate, then you could end up being a part-time job hopper!
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Naomi: このお話は、日本の大学生の就職活動 “job hunting” について知らないと、理解しにくいかもしれませんねぇ。
Natsuko: う～ん、そうだと思います。少し、じゃあここで、説明しておきましょうか。
日本の学校は普通四月に始まって、三月に終わります。つまり、大学を卒業するのは三月なんですね。
大学院に行ったり、留学したり・・・という学生以外は、その後すぐ四月から働き始めることが多いんですよ。
Naomi: うん。そうやって、三月に大学を卒業してすぐ会社に入る人たちのことを「新卒」っていうふうに言います。ま、「新しく卒業した人たち」という意味なんですね。
Chris: じゃ仕事は、いつ見つけるんですか。I mean when you find a job?
Natsuko: 今は、大学三年生の秋ぐらいから、みんな仕事を探し始めるんだそうです。
Chris: じゃ・・・つまり、実際に働き始める一年半前から仕事を探し始めるってことですね。So they start looking for a job a year and half before they can actually start working.
Naomi: お！計算速いですよね・・・・そういうことです。仕事を探す活動のことを、一般的に「就職活動」っていうふうに言うんですよね。
Chris: どんなことをするんですか。インターンシップ "internship" とかですか。
Naomi: うーん、日本ではどうでしょうね。まだインターンシップは一般的ではないですよね。
Natsuko: そうだと思います。
Naomi: ま、増えてるみたいですけどね。
Natsuko: はい。もちろん、したい仕事の種類や企業にもよるんですけど、日本の大学生の就職活動は、企業の説明会 (the work seminar) に行ったり、履歴書 (resume, CV) を送った
り、あとはOB訪問をする・・・・なんていう人もいるでしょうね～。
Chris: OB訪問？
Naomi: OB、またはOG、つまり自分が通っている大学を何年か前に卒業した人と連絡をとって、その務めてる会社がどんな会社なのかを、教えてもらったりするんですね。実際に働いている人の意見って、参考になりますからね。話を聞いて、あぁ、この仕事は自分に合う」とか「合わない」とか判断することもできます。
Chris: へ～。なるほどぉ。大変ですよね～。
Naomi: はい。大学生は、本来は勉強することが目的であるはずなんですが、大学三年生から四年生は就職活動が忙しくて、授業に出られない・・・なんていう学生も多いみたいですね～。
Chris: へ～。でもなんで、そんなに頑張るんですか。卒業してから仕事を見つけるんじゃ遅いんですか。
Natsuko: 日本の場合、一般的には大学を卒業してすぐに就職するとき、つまり「新卒」が一番就職しやすいと言われているんですね。
Naomi: 基本的に、会社は若い人を必要としているんでしょうね。あ、もちろんこれは、一般論ですけどね。
Chris: なるほどぉ。
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Naomi: では、「就職活動」"job hunting" について話すときによく使う表現を確認しましょう。まずこの「就職」という言葉ですが、これは「仕事を見つけて、働くこと」という意味です。
Chris: 就職 means "finding employment".
Natsuko: 就職の反対は、「退職」(retirement) です。
Naomi: 「仕事を見つけるために、何かをすること」つまり、面接を受けたり、レジメを送ったりすることを、「就職活動」(job hunting) と言いますが、他にも、「就職」を使った表現がダイアログにありましたね。
Natsuko: はい。まずは「就職難」
Chris: "difficulty in finding employment"
Nastuko: 不況などの理由で、就職することが難しい、仕事を見つけるのが難しい・・・という意味ですが、これは、主に「フルタイムの仕事を見つけるのが難しい」という意味です。
Chris: 就職難 is used to indicate a situation where people have difficulty finding a full-time position.
Naomi: もう一つ「就職」を使った表現がありました。
Natsuko: はい。「就職浪人」
Naomi: これは、［就職をしたい」って本人は思っているのに、仕事が見つからないで、卒業しても就職活動をしている人のことを言います。
Chris: 「浪人」って、サムライ映画とかに出てくるんですよね。
Naomi: あ、そうそう。その「浪人」っていうのは、簡単に言うと「主人のない武士」つまり仕事のない武士ということですからね。
Chris: "a wandering samurai that has no master" in the ancient samurai part of land.
Natsuko: そうですね。浪人というのは「主人がいない」、つまり「所属するところがない」"they don’t belong to anywhere" という意味なんです。
今は、「浪人」あるいは「大学浪人」というのは、「大学の入学試験に合格できなかったので、次の年の試験に、もう一回挑戦すること」を言いますね。
Naomi: じゃ、ちょっとまとめましょうか。一般に、高校を卒業しても、大学に入学できなかった人のことを
Natsuko: 「浪人」あるいは、「大学浪人」
Naomi: で、大学を卒業しても、就職できない人のことを
Natsuko: 「就職浪人」
Naomi: と言います。
Chris: 浪人 has comes to mean "a student who has failed to get accepted at a university he/she applied for and is waiting for the chance to try again next year." When this is used together with 就職, it refers to a student who fails to get employed by a company and is waiting for another chance to try again.
Naomi: では次に、カタカナの表現を二つ確認していきましょう。まず、
Natsuko: 「ニート」
Naomi: これはもともと、英語から来ているんですよね。
Chris: Right. NEET stands for "Not in Education, Employment or Training"
Natsuko: 現在、学校にも通っていないし、働いてもいないし、トレーニングも受けていない・・・要するに、何もしていない人たちのことを言います。
Naomi: 一般的には「働きたい」とさえ思っていない人を指すことが多いようですね。
Chris: ニート refers to young people who aren't going to school, aren't working, aren't doing anything to get a job and don't have any intention of finding work.
Natsuko: あの、日本語だと「私の弟がニートで心配しているんだよね～。」とか言えますけど、英語で"My brother is neet."とか言いませんよね。（笑）
Chris: いや、言いませんね～。（笑）英語だと、だた、"My brother is unemployed." とか言いますね。
Naomi: う～ん。では、二つ目のカタカナの表現です。
Natsuko: 「フリーター」
Chris: “freeter”???
Natsuko: これも、おもしろい言葉ですよね。「フリーランスアルバイター」を短くしてできた言葉らしいですよ。
Chris: へ～。フリーランスは “freelance” 英語なんですけど、アルバイターはドイツ語なんですよね。
英語とドイツ語を組み合わせて、日本語になっているんですね！
Naomi: あぁ・・・言われてみれば、そうですね～。おもしろい！
アルバイトは、英語だと “part-time job” ですかね。ですから、アルバイターとすると “part time worker”。つまり、フリーターというのは、
Chris: "freelance part-timer"
Natsuko: あの、何個かの part-time job をかけもちして、生活しているというイメージですよね。
Naomi: う～ん、そうですね～。しかも、いわゆる、専門職 (job that requires special skills) とかではなくて、コンビニの店員さんとか、レストランでのお皿洗いとか、ま、ちょっと言葉は悪いですけれども、どちらかというと「簡単な仕事をしている」というイメージは正直あるかもしれないですね。
Natsuko: そうですね。しかもいろんな仕事していて、それぞれにプロ意識 (professionalism) を持っていないという印象はありますね。
Chris: へ～。じゃ、僕の友だちで、大学の part-time job を何個も持っている人がいるんですけど、彼はフリーターじゃないですね？
Natsuko: 大学で、教えているんですか。
Chris: そうです。大学とか、専門学校とか。
Naomi: 全然、フリーターじゃないですね。それは、講師です。
Natsuko: はい。プロフェッショナルですね。あと、学生でアルバイト “part-time job” をしている人も、フリーターとは呼びませんので、注意してください。
Chris: フリーター refers to "people who make a living through working part-time jobs. Maybe without any professionalism." So it doesn't refer to students who have a part-time jobs.
Naomi: 今の日本の問題の一つに、「就職難で、若い人がフルタイムの仕事につけなくて、ニートやフリーターになってしまう」というのがあるんですね。
Natsuko: はい。だから、ダイアログで、お母さんが「せっかく大学まで行ったのに、ニートにでもなったら、困るわ。」と言っているんですよね。
Chris: So in the dialog, the mother says "You went all the way through college, I will not accept you becoming a NEET."
Naomi: では、文法に入っていきましょう。
このレッスンでは、動詞 (verb) につける「かねる」と「かねない」の使い方を見ていきます。
Chris: In this lesson we'll learn the usage of auxiliary verb かねる "cannot"and its negative form かねない "it's very possible".
Naomi: まず、形から確認しましょう。「動詞の masu-stem + かねる」あるいは「動詞の masu-stem + かねない」です。
Chris: So both かねる and かねない follows the masu-stem of a verb. 例、お願いします。
Natsuko: 例えば、「言う」は、「言いかねる」
Chris: "cannot say"
Natsuko: 「言いかねない」
Chris:"it's possible to say"or "might say"
Natsuko: となります。
Naomi: 次に、詳しい意味を説明します。「かねる」は (cannot) つまり「できない」という意味だとうふうに説明しました。これは「したいけれども、立場上できない」あるいは、「本当はしたいのに、理由があってできません」という意味なんですね。
Chris: So かねる expresses that someone can not do something even if he/she wants to do it for some reason.
Naomi: 例えば、レストランで「どれもよさそうで、決める事ができない・・・・」そんなときには、
Natsuko: 「あ～決めかねる～。」なんて、使いますね。この「かねる」は、「～かねます」という形で、丁寧に「それはできません」と断るときにも使われるんですよね。これはビジネスの場面で便利です。
Chris: This expression ～かねる is used to politely say that you can't do something in a formal situation such as a business setting.
Naomi: 例えば会社で上司に「その意見には、賛成することができません」と言いたければ、
Natsuko: 「その意見には、賛成しかねます。」
Chris: “I just can’t agree with that idea.”
Naomi: お客さんに、何かを頼まれて「引き受けることはできません」という場合には？
Natsuko: 「その仕事は引き受けかねます。」
Chris: “I cannot accept this job.”
Naomi: では次に、「かねない」の意味を確認しましょう。「かねない」は「かもしれない」(it's very possible) とか (might) という意味ですが、何か「あまりよくないことが起きるかもしれない」とか「本当はしてほしくないけど、誰かが何かをしてしまうかもしれない」という意味なんですね。
Natsuko: はい。例えば、「野菜が高くなってほしくないな～。でも、寒い日が続くと、野菜の値段が高くなってしまうかもしれないなぁ・・・」なんていうときには、
「寒い日が続くと、野菜の値段が上がりかねない。」
Chris: “If it continues this cold, it's very possible that the price of vegetable will rise.”
Naomi: 「本当は疑いたくないけど、彼は嘘をつくかもしれないな・・・」なんていうときは？
Natsuko: 「彼は嘘をつきかねない。」
Chris: “It's very possible that he is lying.”
Natsuko: それから、この「かねない」は「かも知れない」という意味なので、自分の行動については、普通は言いません。
Naomi: あ、そうですね。
Natsuko:「私は、うそをつきかねない」なんて、言えないですもんね。
Chris: So, you can use this expression when you say that someone might do something undesirable for the speaker or something undesirable might happen. So, usually you don't use this expression in regards to your own action.
Chris: 「かねる」が "cannot" で、その negative form の「かねない」が "it's possible"という意味なんですよね？
Naomi: そうですね。「かねない」は"not cannot" ということですから、二重否定 (double negative) なんですよね～。
Natsuko: なんか、考えたら、すごいややこしいですね。分かんなくなってきました。
Chris: つい、間違えかねません。
Natsuko: あ、さすが、うまいです！
Chris: ありがとうございます！
