| Jessi: 女の人が電車の中で寝ちゃったんですね。So the women fell asleep on the train and ended up missing the last train to her destination... |
| Tomoyuki: そうですね(笑) どうやって家に帰るんでしょうかね。タクシーで帰るんでしょうか。 |
| Jessi: Yeah, she might have to take a taxi home, or maybe she could call up a friend and crash at their place. |
| Tomoyuki: ああ、そうか。友達に電話をするかもしれませんね。 |
| Jessi: Have you ever missed your last train? 終電に遅れたことはありますか？ |
| Tomoyuki: はい。何度もあります(笑) |
| Jessi: Many times?! |
| Tomoyuki: そのときは、電車で近くまで行って、あとはタクシーを使ったりします。 |
| Jessi: あ、なるほど。So you go as far as you go by train, and then from there, walk or take a taxi or something. |
| Tomoyuki: そうですね。 |
| Jessi: あ、なるほど〜。 |
| Tomoyuki: あと、日本は電車の中で寝ている人多いですね。 |
| Jessi: そうですね。 |
| Tomoyuki: それは、たぶん、安全だからです。 |
| Jessi: If you take trains in Japan, you may be surprised to find that a lot of passengers sleep on trains - no matter what time it is, and regardless of age, gender... you'll always see people sleeping. Tomoyuki said it's probably because trains are that safe in Japan. |

| VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE |

| Tomoyuki: 終電 |
| Jessi: “終電” means "the last train" |
| The first Kanji "終(しゅう)" means "end" "last" or "finish." And the second Kanji "電" means 電車 train. |
| Tomoyuki:「終電」は「最後の電車」「終わりの電車」という意味ですね。 |
| Jessi: Be careful it's not "しゅでん" but it's ”しゅうでん”. You have to prolong the “う” sound. |
| Tomoyuki: Right. Repeat after me.「終電(しゅうでん)」(wait for 5 sec.) |
| Jessi: In this lesson, there are 2 more words that start with the kanji 終(しゅう). |
| Tomoyuki: そうですね。終点 and 終日. |
| Jessi: The first one, 終点, literally means "the last point" and it refers to "the last stop (for a bus or train)" |
| Tomoyuki: はい。終点 "the last stop." |
| でも、終日はちょっと意味が違います。「一日中」「朝から夜まで」という意味です。 |
| Jessi: And “終日” basically means "from morning to night" or "all day long." |
| Tomoyuki: 例えば、「終日禁煙」は「一日中禁煙」「一日中タバコはダメです」という意味ですね。 |
| Jessi: Right.The expression “終日禁煙” is a combination of 終日 "all day long" and 禁煙 "no smoking", so this means "smoking is prohibited at all times." |
| Tomoyuki: これは、駅や空港でよく聞きますね。You'll hear this expression at stations or airports. |
| Jessi: OK. Listeners. Time for a quiz! What is "the last train" in Japanese. |

| Jessi: Next, say "the last stop" in Japanese. |

| Jessi: How did you do, did you get them all right? OK, on to the grammar. |

| 間もなく１番線に電車がまいります。 |
| Jessi: "A train will be arriving shortly on track number 1." |
| Tomoyuki: この「まいります」が、このレッスンのポイントです。 |
| 「まいります」は「まいる」の [ます form]です。 |
| Jessi: And “まいる" is the humble form of both the verb 行く "to go" AND kuru "to come." Let's show you with some examples. Tomoyuki, say "I'm going to Ōsaka tomorrow." |
| Tomoyuki: 明日(あした)、大阪に行きます。 |
| Jessi: This is a formal sentence. But if you want to say it more formally, replace “行きます” with “まいります”. |
| Tomoyuki: 明日、大阪にまいります。 |
| Jessi: OK. Listeners, listen and repeat after Tomoyuki."I'm going to Ōsaka tomorrow." |
| Tomoyuki: 明日、大阪にまいります。 |
| Jessi: (wait for 5 sec).Great. Let's do one more... How do you say "I come back from Ōsaka the day after tomorrow"? |
| Tomoyuki: あさって、大阪から帰って来ます。 |
| Jessi: あさって(Jessi: the day after tomorrow) 大阪から (Jessi: from Osaka) 帰ってきます (Jessi: will return or will come back). |
| Now listeners, rephrase this sentence to make it even more formal. |
| Tomoyuki: Here's a hint. You have to replace “来ます” with “まいります”. |
| Jessi: (wait for 5 sec.) All right.If you said... |
| Tomoyuki: あさって、大阪から帰ってまいります。 |
| Jessi: Then, よくできました！Good job! So, Tomoyuki, can we hear a sentence from the dialogue again? |
| Tomoyuki: はい。間もなく１番線に電車がまいります。 |
| Jessi: Let's break this sentence down. |
| Tomoyuki: 間もなく(Jessi: shortly)１番線に(Jessi: to track number 1) 電車が( Jessi: train plus particle “が”) まいります (Jessi: come or will come). |
| Jessi: Say that sentence again? |
| Tomoyuki: 間もなく１番線に電車がまいります。 |
| Jessi: "A train will be arriving shortly on track number 1." |
| Now, you know that humble language should be used to describe actions or states of the speaker and speaker's in-group. However, ”まいります” is also used when describing a situation in an extra formal way. |
| Tomoyuki: 「電車がまいります」は、駅でよく聞きますよね。You hear this ”電車がまいります” a lot at train stations. |
