POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Rebecca: ラーメンは人気ですね。Ramen is quite popular in Japan, isn’t it?
Naomi: Yeah I agree. I think Ramen is one of the most popular dishes in Japan. People line up for one bowl of Ramen.
Rebecca: Have you ever done that?
Naomi: はい、したことがあります。I waited for 2 hours.
Rebecca: Was it worth it?
Naomi: Not really.
Rebecca: Where was that?
Naomi: 新宿です。
Rebecca: Shinjuku.
Naomi: 新宿に有名なラーメン屋があります。
Rebecca: There is a famous Ramen restaurant in Shinjuku.
Naomi: And if you are hungry and if you waited 2 hours, you would think anything is delicious. So I can’t really tell that Ramen was really good.
Rebecca: Maybe that’s their secret.
Naomi: そうかもしれない。Right.
Rebecca: Everyone thinks it is delicious because they have to wait 2 hours before they can eat it and they are starving.
Naomi: Good point. すごいね。でも、 You will see a long queue at the famous Ramen restaurant.
Rebecca: Right and it’s not just Ramen, is it because I have seen people lining up for what was it? Donuts, oh yeah.
Naomi: Krispy なんだっけ Kreme.
Rebecca: Krispy Kreme yes. There was a line for the line. You had to line up a little way away in the separate line before they’d let you into the line for the donuts.
Naomi: そうですね。クリスピークリームも新宿にありますね。
Rebecca: So in addition to the delicious Ramen place, there is also Krispy Kreme in Shinjuku.
Naomi: そうですね。
Rebecca: Good reason to go to Shinjuku. Let’s move on to the vocab.
VOCAB LIST
Rebecca:First word.
Naomi: ラーメン屋
Rebecca: Ramen shop, Ramen restaurant.
Naomi: (slow) ラーメンや (natural speed)ラーメン屋
Rebecca: Starting low, going high on the second syllable A, staying high.
Naomi: ラーメン屋
Rebecca: Next.
Naomi: 小さい
Rebecca: Small, little, tiny.
Naomi:(slow) ちいさい (natural speed) 小さい
Rebecca: Starting low, rising on the second syllable E, falling on the last syllable E.
Naomi: 小さい
Rebecca: Next.
Naomi: 店員
Rebecca: Shop clerk.
Naomi: (slow) てんいん(natural speed)店員
Rebecca: Starting low, going high on the second syllable uh staying high.
Naomi: 店員
Rebecca: Next.
Naomi: テーブル
Rebecca: Table.
Naomi: (slow)テーブル (natural speed)テーブル
Rebecca: Starting low, going high on the second syllable A, staying high.
Naomi: テーブル
Rebecca: Next.
Naomi: 椅子
Chair.
(slow) いす (natural speed) 椅子
Rebecca: Starting low, rising on the second syllable Su.
Naomi: 椅子
Next.
Rebecca: Store, stop.
Naomi: (slow) みせ (natural speed)店
Rebecca: Starting low, rising on the second syllable Se. Lastly..
Naomi: たくさん
Rebecca: Many, a lot, much.
Naomi: (slow) たくさん (natural speed) たくさん
Rebecca: Starting low, rising on the second syllable ku, staying high.
Naomi: たくさん

Lesson focus

Rebecca: Let’s have a look at the usage for some of the words from today’s conversation. The first word we are going to look at is たくさん which means a lot or plenty of or many or much.
Naomi: そうですね。
Rebecca: It means lots of things.
Naomi: たくさんありますね。
Rebecca: Yeah. It has many meanings たくさん has たくさん meanings. So let’s go back to where this appeared in the conversation. Could you repeat the sentence for us please Naomi Senseni.
Naomi: お客さんがたくさんいますね。
Rebecca: There are lot of customers, aren’t they? So breaking down the items in this phrase, we have お客さん customer, がsubject marking particle, たくさん a lot of, います to exist, ね sentence ending particle which indicates the speakers request for confirmation or request agreement from the about some shared knowledge and in other words, ね means isn’t it or doesn’t it or.
Naomi: Right. Tag question.
Rebecca: Yeah like there is lots of customers. Aren’t they? Aren’t they is the ね okay. The next word we – we already kind of looked at this I think before. ラーメン屋.
Naomi: そうですね。
Rebecca: Which means Ramen restaurant or Ramen shop?
Naomi: や is a suffix. It means store or seller or business place.
Rebecca: That’s right and it’s a colloquial expression.
Naomi: そうですね。 So if we say 薬屋.
Rebecca: A pharmacist or pharmacy sorry, the shop.
Naomi: うどん屋
Rebecca: Udon noodles shop or an Udon noodle restaurant.
Naomi: 本屋
Rebecca: A book store.
Naomi: そうですね。 but や is a suffix. So you can’t use や by itself.
Rebecca: Right. You can only stick it on the end of another word.
Naomi: お店 means shop.
Rebecca: That is a standalone word. You can use お店 by itself but not 屋 by itself.
Naomi: そうですね。お店へ行きます。
Rebecca: I will go to the shop. So I will go to the shop.
Naomi: Yeah but you can’t say 屋へ行きます。
Rebecca: No that doesn’t make sense.
Naomi: That sounds really strange.
Rebecca: Yeah. Naomi Sensei, do you have a favorite Ramen [*]
Naomi: ラーメンは好きですけど、I don’t have any favorite Ramen 屋. What about you?
Rebecca: Well actually I don’t either but sometimes it’s fun to go to the famous Ramen 屋, the ones where people line up for ages just to get a bowl.
Naomi: そうですね。
Rebecca: And they sell out too sometimes. Say you know, they only make a certain amount and then if you don’t get there in time, they are all gone.
Naomi: そうですよね。
Rebecca: Just near my university is a famous Ramen-Yasan. It came top in the rankings. I don’t know. Did you see that program? It was on New Year’s eve a couple of years ago.
Naomi: Yeah.
Rebecca: 日本全国ラーメン屋さんランキング something like that.
Naomi: Okay.
Rebecca: Any way the one that got number one happens to be near my university and so after that, there were just so many people lined up. We have to line up for 2 or 3 hours just to get in. So I’ve never actually been but I can’t go now because it’s famous. So everybody is always lining up to go there.
Naomi: Wow. Is that place still popular?
Rebecca: Well actually I haven’t had a look at it recently. So perhaps now because it was a few years ago. Perhaps now I could actually get a seat but for a long time there, you couldn’t.
Naomi: なるほど。ラーメンは人気ですよね。
Rebecca: It’s like people who are Ramen experts you know.
Naomi: います。ラーメンエキスパートがいるんですよね。
Rebecca: And they go around trying out all the different little Ramen-Yasen’s all around Tokyo, don’t they?
Naomi: Right and they give stars and stuff like…
Rebecca: Like ranking. I bet there is a magazine for it. Is there probably more than one? You know you can buy magazine. Is that true like a Gourmet magazine?
Naomi: はい、いっぱいありますよ。Yeah.
Rebecca: Well I like Ramen but I am not quite that into it.
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Rebecca: Okay so today’s grammar point is the usage of somewhere に, something が, number あります
Naomi: そうですね。
Rebecca: So what’s the example sentence.
Naomi: この小さいラーメン屋に店員が10人います。
Rebecca: There are ten staff members in this tiny Ramen restaurant.
Naomi: この This 小さい Small ラーメン屋
Rebecca: Ramen shop, Ramen restaurant.
Naomi: に
Rebecca: In.
Naomi: 店員
Rebecca: Staff members or waiters.
Naomi: が
Rebecca: Subject marking particle.
Naomi: 10人
Rebecca: 10
Naomi: います
Rebecca: Exist or to be. So just to recap the order for this particular grammar structure, we should note that it’s the item then が, then the number, then います or あります.
Naomi: 店員がいます。店員が10人います。
Rebecca: Okay, so literally staff members 10 are. Is that how you would say it?
Naomi: そうですね。
Rebecca: Okay, so again the order is different to English.
Naomi: はい。

Outro

Rebecca: Okay, so that’s all for today. I hope you enjoyed the lesson.
Naomi: じゃ、また。
Rebecca: See you next time.

Mina-san, Fabrizio isn't feeling very well so his voice sounds a little strange in this lesson. When he's feeling better, we'll update these audio files!
