POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Rebecca: Naomi-sensei, 免許ありますか (menkyo arimasu ka). Do you have a driver’s license?
Naomi: You mean 車の免許 (kuruma no menkyo)
Rebecca: そうですね。 (Sō desu ne.) Yes.
Naomi: はい、あります。 (Hai, arimasu.) Yes I do. レベッカさんは車の免許ありますか。 (Rebekka-san wa kuruma no menkyo arimasu ka.)
Rebecca: Yes I do have the drivers license, an Australian drivers license.
Naomi: 日本の車の免許は。 (Nihon no kuruma no menkyo wa.)
Rebecca: ありません。 (Arimasen.) I don’t have the Japanese one. I think I could get one. We have some kind of arrangement with the Japanese government, the Australian and Japanese. I can just swap it over.
Naomi: そうですね。ありますね。 (Sō desu ne. Arimasu ne.)
Rebecca: Yeah I just haven’t got around with こわいです(kowai desu), driving in Tokyo. There is a lot of driving in Tokyo. It is too scary.
Naomi: そうですね。 (Sō desu ne.) but in Australia, people drive on the left side of the road.
Rebecca: Yeah, just like in Japan.
Naomi: じゃ、同じですね。 (Ja, onaji desu ne.) So it’s not so difficult for you to drive a car in Japan?
Rebecca: Well yeah I suppose but there is so much traffic in Tokyo. There is so much you have to concentrate on and I’d be worried about dinging the car.
Naomi: Yeah but when you are traveling outside of Tokyo?
Rebecca: Oh yeah. No, that would be nice. I wouldn’t mind driving somewhere like 北海道 (Hokkaidō) or somewhere like that.
Naomi: 北海道の運転は楽しいですよ。 (Hokkaidō no unten wa tanoshii desu yo.)
Rebecca: Yeah it looks fun. Actually I’ve been on a holiday in Italy and with my mother and we rented a car and they drive on the other side.
Naomi: Which is 右側 (rigigawa).
Rebecca: Migigawa yes. The right hand side and that was quite frightening because you know it was yeah and also the roads are very small and yeah it was interesting. So I guess Japan is a little better in that respect.
Naomi: そうですね。 (Sō desu ne.)
Rebecca: Do you like driving Naomi Sensei?
Naomi: はい、運転好きですよ。 (Hai, unten suki desu yo.)
Rebecca: Do you often go for drives?
Naomi: 1週間に1回かな。 (I-sshūkan ni ikkai ka na.) Once a week.
Rebecca: Once a week. Oh actually that’s quite often.
Naomi: そうですね。 (Sō desu ne.) I am not sure if I am a good driver.
Rebecca: 上手かどうか。 (Jōzu ka dō ka.)
Naomi: そうそう。上手かどうかわかりませんけど。 (Sō sō. Jōzu ka dō ka wakarimasen kedo.)
Rebecca: You probably are if you have that much practice.
Naomi: 好きです。今ね、でも、ガソリン高いですよ。 (Suki desu. Ima ne, demo, gasorin takai desu yo.)
Rebecca: Gas is really expensive. It is really expensive.
Naomi: 1リットル130円から140円です。 (Ichi-rittoru 130-en kara 140-en desu.)
Rebecca: One liter is priced between 130 to 140 right?
Naomi: はい。 (Hai.)
Rebecca: That’s a lot yeah.
Naomi: そうね。 (Sō ne.)
Rebecca: Yeah in Australia, we use liters. In America, they use gallons.
Naomi: ガロン (Garon) So one gallon is 4 liters.
Rebecca: I don’t know.
Naomi: So about $5 or $6 per gallon.
Rebecca: Right okay.
Naomi: Expensive. ガソリンは、ほんとに高い。 (Gasorin wa, hontoni takai.)
Rebecca: Actually we used the word 高い in the lesson today. Didn’t we? What is it Fabrizio said とても、とても高い車です (totemo, tote mo takai kuruma desu). His car is very, very expensive.
Naomi: はい。ガソリンは、とてもとても高いです。 (Hai. Gasorin wa, totemo totemo takai desu.)
Rebecca: Gasoline is very, very expensive. Okay so let’s have a look at some of the vocab from today’s lesson.
VOCAB LIST
Rebecca:The first item is
Naomi: ドイツ (Doitsu)
Rebecca: Germany.
Naomi: (slow) どいつ (Do i tsu) (natural speed)ドイツ (Doitsu)
Rebecca: Next.
Naomi: つまらない (tsumaranai)
Rebecca: Boring, uninteresting. It’s i-Adjective.
Naomi: (slow) つまらない (tsumaranai) (natural speed)つまらない (tsumaranai)
Rebecca: Next.
Naomi: 危ない (abunai)
Rebecca: Dangerous. Another i -adjective.
Naomi: (slow) あぶない (abunai) (natural speed) 危ない (abunai)
Rebecca: Next.
Naomi: 運転 (unten)
Rebecca: Driving.
Naomi: (slow) うんてん (un ten) (natural speed)運転 (unten)
Rebecca: Next.
Naomi: 嫌い (kirai)
Rebecca: Dislikable. This is a Na-Adjective.
Naomi: (slow) きらい (kirai) (natural speed)嫌い (kirai)
Rebecca: Next.
Naomi: 免許 (menkyo)
Rebecca: License, qualification.
Naomi: (slow) めんきょ (menkyo) (natural speed)免許 (menkyo)
Rebecca: Next.
Naomi: 大好き (daisuki)
Rebecca: Much loved, favorite. This is also a Na-Adjective.
Naomi: (slow) だいすき (daisuki) (natural speed) 大好き (daisuki)
Rebecca: Next.
Naomi: 大嫌い (daikirai)
Rebecca: Very dislikable. Hateful, a Na-Adjective.
Naomi: (slow) だいきらい (dai kirai) (natural speed)大嫌い (daikirai)
Rebecca: So we’ve been focusing on the word 好きwhich means likable.
Naomi: The left side of the Kanji means woman right.
Rebecca: Yeah.
Naomi: Right side of the Kanji is child. Woman and Child are together likable or woman likes child.
Rebecca: Yeah it’s a good way to remember it. Isn’t it?
Naomi: はい。 (Hai.)
Rebecca: So 好き (suki) means likable and what’s the opposite?
Naomi: 嫌い (kirai)
Rebecca: 嫌い (kirai) dislike.
Naomi: そうですね。 (Sō desu ne.) The pronunciation of 嫌い (kirai) is bit similar to 綺麗 (kirei). So…
Rebecca: Pretty.
Naomi: Yeah.
Rebecca: And pretty and dislikable. Yeah you wouldn’t want to make a mistake with those two.
Naomi: そうね。(Sō ne.) Be careful.
Rebecca: So dislikable is
Naomi: 嫌い (kirai)
Rebecca: Right okay. So 覚えてください (oboe te kudasai).
Naomi: はい。 (Hai.) Beautiful is 綺麗 (kirei)
Rebecca: And what about license? That was the word that came up in the conversation?
Naomi: 免許 (menkyo)
Rebecca: 免許 (menkyo.). So, driver's license is...
Naomi: Menkyo.
Rebecca: What about can you say 運転免許 (unten menkyo)
Naomi: 運転免許、言いますね。 (Unten menkyo, iimasu ne.)
Rebecca: Driving license. What about – what are some other licenses?
Naomi: タクシーの免許 (Takushī no menkyo)
Rebecca: Taxi license or..
Naomi: 先生の免許 (Sensei no menkyo)
Rebecca: 先生の免許 (Sensei no menkyo) Oh a teaching license. Is that what you call?
Naomi: Teaching license, teaching certificate.
Rebecca: Oh yeah teaching certificate.
Naomi: そうですね。 (Sō desu ne.) but in a conversation, it’s okay to say 先生 (sensei) No
免許 (menkyo) but in a politically correct way of saying is 教員免許 (kyōin menkyo) but
Rebecca: 教員免許 (Kyōin menkyo). So 教員 (kyōin) is a more formal word for teacher.
Naomi: そうですね。 (Sō desu ne.) In a conversation, 先生の免許 (sensei no menkyo) is good enough I guess.
Rebecca: Okay so the sentence from today’s dialogue was
Naomi: 免許はありませんが。 (Menkyo wa arimasen ga.)
Rebecca: I don’t have a license pouch.
Naomi: He said I don’t mind driving but I don’t have a driver’s license.
Rebecca: That’s a bit worrying. Isn’t it?
Naomi: ちょっと怖いですね (Chotto kowai desu ne) is scary.
Rebecca: Does he mean he doesn’t have a Japanese driver’s license?
Naomi: そうかもしれないですね (Sō kamo shirenai desu ne) or わかんないけど (wakan'nai kedo).
Rebecca: I hope so. Well in today’s dialogue, he just said 免許 (menkyo) didn’t he which from the context we can tell he means the driver’s license. So there is no need to say 車の (kuruma no). The car license or the driver’s license. That’s why you can’t hear it. Okay so let’s look at some grammar.

Lesson focus

Rebecca:Today’s target grammar sentence.
Naomi: イタリアの車が大好きです。 (Itaria no kuruma ga daisuki desu.)
Rebecca: I really like Italian cars or I love Italian cars.
Naomi: 運転が大嫌いです。 (Unten ga daikirai desu.)
Rebecca: I really don’t like driving or I hate driving. So in today’s grammar point, we are going to focus on different degrees of liking and disliking right?
Naomi: はい。 (Hai.)
Rebecca: If we were going to talk about this on a scale from most likable to the thing you hate the list, let’s look at how you say that? So how do you say I like it very much?
Naomi: 大好きです。 (Daisuki desu.)
Rebecca: And just I like it.
Naomi: 好きです (suki desu)
Rebecca: What about so, so or it’s okay?
Naomi: Okay so, so in Japanese is まあまあ (mā mā)
Rebecca: Mama.
Naomi: So you can just say mama or まあまあ好きです (mā mā suki desu)
Rebecca: Okay. What about I dislike it?
Naomi: 嫌いです (kirai desu)
Rebecca: And I hate it?
Naomi: 大嫌いです。 (Daikirai desu.)
Rebecca: 何が大嫌いですか、なおみ先生。 (Nani ga daikirai desu ka, Naomi sensei.)
Naomi: 私はね、実は、鳩が大嫌いです。 (Watashi wa ne, jitsuwa, hato ga daikirai desu.)
Rebecca: So I just asked Naomi Sensei what she really hates and she said, she really hates pigeons. Do you have a lot of pigeons where you live?
Naomi: No but in the park. In Japanese parks, there are so many pigeons and 気持ち悪いですね (kimochi warui desu ne).
Rebecca: Yeah they are a little dirty. Aren’t they?
Naomi: そうですね。 (Sō desu ne.) What about you Rebecca 何が大嫌いですか (nani ga daikirai desu ka).
Rebecca: I really hate it when people are rude.
Naomi: You mean 失礼な人が大嫌い (shitsureina hito ga daikirai)
Rebecca: Or well I try not to hate the person but I certainly hate the rude behavior.
Naomi: なるほどね。(Naruhodo ne.) 失礼な (Shitsureina) is a Na-Adjective which means rude. So, 失礼な人 (shitsureina hito) means rude people.
Rebecca: 失礼な人が嫌いです。 (Shitsureina hito ga kirai desu.) I don’t like rude people.
Naomi: なるほどね。みなさんは、何が嫌いですか。 (Naruhodo ne. Mina-san wa, nani ga kirai desu ka.)
Rebecca: So what do you dislike?
Naomi: 何が好きですか。 (Nani ga suki desu ka.)
Rebecca: And what do you like?
Naomi: 教えてください。 (Oshiete kudasai.)

Outro

Rebecca: Let us know. See you next week.
Naomi: じゃあまた。 (Jā mata.)
