INTRODUCTION |
Rebecca: They are here, there and everywhere in Japanese. |
Naomi: なおみです。 (Naomi desu.) |
Rebecca: Rebecca here. |
Naomi: こんにちは、レベッカさん。お元気ですか? (Kon'nichiwa, Rebekka-san. O-genki desu ka?) |
Rebecca: 元気ですよ。今日もよろしくお願いします。 (Genki desu yo. Kyō mo yoroshiku onegaishimasu.) |
Naomi:こちらこそよろしくお願いします。 (Kochira koso yoroshiku onegaishimasu.) |
Rebecca: Today, we are going to take a look at something に (ni), something があります (ga arimasu) and something に (ni) something がいます (ga imasu). These are expressions for expressing existence with a location word. Yeah, we will get into that later. We will explain what that is in a minute. We are also going to take a look at こそあど (kosoado), like そこ, ここ, あそこ (soko, koko, asoko), and どこ (doko). Naomi Sensei, there are four people in our conversation today right? |
Naomi: はい。キムミヨンと西本秋 ファブリツィオ それから南夏見です。 (Hai. Kimumiyon to Nishimoto aki Faburizio sorekara Minami Natsumi desu.) They are at the office I think. |
Rebecca: So once again, we are going to be listening to polite Japanese. |
Naomi: そうですね (sō desu ne) because they are coworkers. |
Rebecca: Right. 聞きましょう。 (Kikimashō.) |

POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
Naomi: みなみさんは強いですね。(Minami-san wa tsuyoidesu ne.) みなみ (Minami) is a quite strong person. Isn’t she? |
Rebecca: Yeah she sure showed that cockroach. |
Naomi: ゴキブリは日本語だと、カサカサカサカサ、英語だと、(Gokiburi wa nihongoda to, kasakasakasakasa, eigoda to) What kind of noise do they make in English? |
Rebecca: What kind of noise? I don’t think English has got as many of those onomatopoeia words as Japanese. ゴキブリ (Gokiburi) what noise does a cockroach make? In Japanese, they go カサカサカサカサ (kasakasakasakasa). Maybe scuttling or we would use a verb say scuttling or scrubbing or something like that. I think that sounds like the sort of rattling noise that they make. It’s horrible. Isn’t it? |
Naomi: そうですよね。 (sō desu yo ne.) レベッカさんは何をしますか。(Rebekka-san wa nani o shimasu ka.) When you see cockroaches, what do you do? What do you usually do? |
Rebecca: Well that depends. If I am in Australia, then I don’t see that many and usually they are tiny little brown things, the bush cockroaches and they don’t do any harm. So I just put it outside but I have to admit that in Tokyo, when I see one of those whopping gray black things I squash it with my shoe if there is a shoe handy. |
Naomi: そうですか。 (sō desu ka.) 私は、いつも (Watashi wa, itsumo) dish washing liquid をかけます。 (O kakemasu.) |
Rebecca: それで死ぬんですか。(Sore de shinu ndesu ka.) Does that kill them? |
Naomi: Yeah it does. |
Rebecca: I never heard that before. 初めて聞きました。 (Hajimete kikimashita.) |
Naomi: いつもそうします。 (Itsumo sō shimasu.) |
Rebecca: I always do that. So you don’t need to buy Gokiburi spray. I think we have it somewhere but I always can’t find it. So I always grab the detergent and then I just pour it on top. |
Naomi: Right. あまり良い話じゃないですね。 (Amari yoi hanashi janaidesu ne.) |
Rebecca: It’s not a really good conversation. |
Naomi: But Gokiburi cockroaches are a big part of life in Tokyo especially during the summer. |
Rebecca: Let’s have a look at today’s vocab. First word, |

Rebecca: Starting low, rising on the second syllable de, falling on the last syllable E. |

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE |
Rebecca: Let’s look at some of the vocabulary from today’s conversation. Okay so our first word is |
Naomi: そこ (soko) |
Rebecca: which means there. So Japanese demonstratives are often called こそあど言葉 (kosoado kotoba) or こそあど (kosoado) words and we’ve already learned some of these such as |
Naomi: これ、それ、あれ (kore, sore, are) and どれ (dore). |
Rebecca: So in these こそあど (kosoado) words, words beginning with こ (ko) are close to the speaker like これ (kore) is this or ここ (koko) is here and words beginning with そ (so) are close to the listener. So それ (sore) is that thing near you and そこ (soko) is over there near you and あ words are words which are away from both the speaker and the listener. So あれ (are) is that thing over there and あそこ (asoko) is over there. |
Naomi: そうですね。(sō desu ne.) That’s kind of exception not あこ (ako), あそこ (asoko). |
Rebecca: あそこ (Asoko) it ends in こ (ko) but it’s あそこ (asoko). Yes, yes so you will note that for things it’s あれ (are) or それ (sore) or これ (kore) and for direction. |
And yeah for location, it’s あそこ そこ、ここ (asoko soko, koko) |
Naomi: And どこ (doko). |
Rebecca: Oh yeah I was forgetting the question words. どこ (Doko) where, どれ (dore) which. Don’t forget to check out the PDF which has a list of these explaining them in some more detail for you and also we will be going over this in the next few lessons. So don’t worry if it doesn’t make sense at this stage. So Naomi Sensei, let’s practice some of these words. |
Naomi: Hi. Today’s dialogue そこに スプレーがありますよ。 (Soko ni supurē ga arimasu yo.) |
Rebecca: There is some spray over there near you. |
Naomi: そうですね。 (sō desu ne.) It’s probably closer to ファブリツィオ (Faburizio). |
Rebecca: Yeah I see. あそこに、だってあそこにゴキブリが (Asoko ni, datte asoko ni gokiburi ga) |
Naomi: あーはいはいはい。あそこにゴキブリが。 (Ā hai hai hai. Asoko ni gokiburi ga.) |
Rebecca: So he has obviously come running out of the toilet and no one who he is talking to or himself is near the toilet. So he is saying. あそこに (asoko ni) |
Naomi: そうですね。 Maybe he is pointing at the direction. |
Rebecca: Yeah I can see, yeah I can see that. |
Naomi: あそこにゴキブリがとかね。 (Asoko ni gokiburi ga toka ne.) |
Rebecca: なるほど。 (Naruhodo.) With practice, this gets very easy once you figure out the difference. Mainly the difference between それ (sore) and これ (kore) is a bit tricky at first but yet with practice it shouldn’t be a problem. |
Naomi: はい、頑張ってください. (Hai, ganbatte kudasai.) |
Lesson focus
|
Rebecca: All right. Let’s have a more thorough look at the grammar used in this lesson. Naomi Sensei, what’s today’s target sentence? |
Naomi: 二つあります。 (Futatsu arimasu.) There are two sentences. そこにスプレーがあります。 (Soko ni supurē ga arimasu.) |
Rebecca: There is spray over there near you. |
Naomi: トイレにゴキブリがいます。 (Toire ni gokiburi ga imasu.) |
Rebecca:There is a cockroach in the bathroom. |
Naomi: Or there are some cockroaches in the bathroom. |
Rebecca: Yes because Japanese doesn’t usually distinguish between singular and plural. So we don’t know how many Gokiburi there are. Today’s grammar point is the usage of に (ni) and がいます (ga imasu). The location or position where something or someone exists usually comes at the beginning of the sentence and it’s marked with the particle Ne. This is a new particle for us. Is that right? |
Naomi: そうですね。新しいです。 (sō desu ne. Atarashii desu.) For example ここに (koko ni) is in here. |
Rebecca: Or here, we would just say here without a particle probably. |
Naomi: お店に (O-mise ni) or in the restaurant. |
Rebecca: Right. So Ne is a particle which indicates where something or someone is existing and we can’t replace that with A. The particle Ne indicating where something or someone is existing can’t be replaced with the particle A. |
Naomi: そうですね。例えば、東京にいきます。東京へいきます。 (sō desu ne. Tatoeba, Tōkyō ni ikimasu. Tōkyō e ikimasu.) Those Ne and A are interchangeable but not in today’s usage. |
Rebecca: Right because today we are looking at Ne as particle indicating existence whereas in those sentences, you’ve just mentioned it’s indicating direction. |
Naomi: そうですね。 (sō desu ne.) |
Rebecca: All right. Well let’s do some sample sentences. Naomi Sensei, お願いします (onegaishimasu). |
Naomi: 駅にトイレがあります。 (Eki ni toire ga arimasu.) |
Rebecca: There is a toilet in the station or there is a bathroom in the station depending on where do you come from Australia or America I believe. |
Naomi: そうですね。ここにチケットがあります。 (sō desu ne. Koko ni chiketto ga arimasu.) |
Rebecca: There is a ticket here. How would I say that? |
Naomi: ねえ。(Nē.) In here, you don’t say in here. |
Rebecca: Really not unless you are like in a box or in a room or something. |
Naomi: Basically ここにチケットがあります (koko ni chiketto ga arimasu) means I have a ticket here right. はいそうです。 (Hai sō desu.) |
Rebecca: Okay. Can we have one more? |
Naomi: お店にお客さんがいます。 (O-mise ni ogyakusan ga imasu.) |
Rebecca: So now we are using います. お店にお客さんがいます。(Imasu. O-mise ni ogyakusan ga imasu.) There is a customer in the store. |
Naomi: そうですね。 (sō desu ne.) お店 (O-mise) is a shop or a store. Ne is a particle, お客さん (o-gyakusan) is a guest or client, が (ga). Ga is a particle and います (imasu) is to exist. |
Rebecca: All right. So one more please. |
Naomi: あそこに男の人がいます。 (Asoko ni otoko no hito ga imasu.) |
Rebecca: There is a man over there. |
Naomi: そうですね。 (sō desu ne.) Instead of saying 男 (otoko), you can of course say 男 (otoko) but 男 (otoko) sounds a bit casual. |
Rebecca: Right. |
Naomi: 男の人 (Otoko no hito) sounds more polite. |
Rebecca: Okay. So what would “woman” be then? |
Naomi: So 女 (on'na) is woman but if you are going to be more polite, 女の人 (on'na no hito). |
Rebecca: なるほど。(Naruhodo.) That’s all for today. Don’t forget to check out the PDF, especially for an explanation of those こそあど (kosoado) words. |
Naomi: そうですね。これ、それ、あれ、どれ。 (sō desu ne. Kore, sore, are, dore.) |
Outro
|
Rebecca: 頑張ってください。 (Ganbatte kudasai.) |
Naomi: はい、お疲れ様でした。 (Hai, otsukare-sama deshita.) |
Rebecca: お疲れ様でした。 (Otsukare-sama deshita.) |
