Yuichi: ゆういちです。
Naomi: なおみです。
Jessi: Jessi here. I’m Going on an All-Ramen Japanese Diet to Lose Weight!
Naomi: ゆういちさん、今回のストーリーについて教えてください。
Yuichi: はい。今回は、少し変わったラーメン屋さんのレポートです。
Jessi: 変わったラーメン屋さん??An unusual ramen shop?? 面白そうですね。
So, apparently the story is a report from an unusual ramen shop.
Yuichi: はい。テレビのレポーターとラーメンに詳しい男の人が出てきます。
Jessi: A TV reporter and a ramen expert are talking. They will be speaking formally.
Naomi: 今回の文法のポイントは?
Yuichi: 「ように」と「ために」の違いです。
Jessi: In this lesson, you will learn the difference between “yō ni” and “tame ni”.
Yuichi: それでは聞いてみましょう。
DIALOGUE
Yuichi: 今度は英語が入ります。
レポーター:今日は、ラーメンに詳しい、岩上さんと一緒に、最近話題になっているユニークなラーメン屋さんにいってみようと思います。
Jessi: Today, I'd like to visit a much-talked-about, unique ramen shop with Mr. Iwagami, who knows a lot about ramen.
レポーター:岩上さん、よろしくお願いします。
Jessi: Mr. Iwagami, thank you for joining us.
岩上:今回紹介したいラーメン店はこちらの「一番★」(いちばんぼし)です。
Jessi: The ramen shop I'd like to introduce today is this one here, Ichiban boshi. (The first star)
岩上:では、早速入ってみましょう。
Jessi: Let's head on in!
(ガラガラガラ)
(door slides open)
岩上:まず最初に、この機械にお金を入れて、食券を買います。
Jessi: First, you put your money into this machine and buy a meal ticket.
レポーター:おや?カウンターのそれぞれ席の両脇に仕切りと、前にのれんがありますねー。
Jessi: Oh? There are partitions on the sides of the counter seats, as well as short split curtains hanging in front.
岩上:そうなんですよ。この仕切りは、お客さんにラーメンの味に集中してもらうために作ってあります。
Jessi: That's right. These partitions were made so that the customer can focus on the taste of the ramen.
岩上:このカウンター席に座ると、両脇も前も見えませんからね。
Jessi: When you sit at these counter seats, you can't see anything on either side of you or in front of you.
レポーター:なるほどー。
Jessi: Ah, I see...!
岩上:あと、このシステムがあるため、女性のお客さんも多いんです。
Jessi: Because they have this kind of system, they get a lot of female customers.
レポーター:ああ、一人ではラーメン屋さんに入りにくい・・・と感じる女性は多いですからね。
Jessi: Ah, since there are a lot of women who feel that it's not easy to go into a ramen restaurant alone.
岩上:そのとおりです。
Jessi: Exactly.
岩上:それから、このお店のラーメンのスープはトンコツ味なんですが・・・
Jessi: Also, the soup they use here for the ramen is tonkotsu flavor…
岩上:はい、オーダー用紙と鉛筆。
Jessi: Here you go, an order form and pencil.
レポーター:ん?このオーダー用紙に自分で書いて、注文するんですか?
Jessi: Hm? You place your order by writing it yourself on this order form?
岩上:そうです。自分の食べたい味になるように、味を選ぶんです。
Jessi: Yes. You choose the flavor so that you get the one you want to have.
岩上:オーダー用紙に書いてある項目にマルをしてください。
Jessi: Please circle the ones you want on the order form.
レポーター:へー。じゃ、わたしは・・・・
Jessi: Wow. Okay, for me…
レポーター:スープは...こってり。
Jessi: for the soup, heavy…
(マルをする音)
(circles)
レポーター:麺はかため・・・
Jessi: Noodles, somewhat hard...
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Yuichi: はい。このラーメン屋さんはですね、実は、日本に本当にあるんです。
Naomi: 知ってます。私、行ったことあります。
Yuichi: 僕も行ったことがあるので、このストーリーを書いてみたんですけども。
Jessi: So this type of ramen shop does actually exist in Japan. And apparently both Naomi and Yuichi have been there.
Naomi: そうですよね。
Jessi: I don’t feel I like here みたいな。
Yuichi: なるほど、はい。リスナーの皆さんが住んでいるところの近くには、変わったお店はありますか?
Naomi: あったら、ぜひ教えてください。

Jessi: The last word is
Yuichi: かため [natural native speed]
Jessi: somewhat hard
Yuichi: かため [slowly - broken down by syllable]
Yuichi: かため [natural native speed]
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Jessi: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Yuichi: 最初の単語は、こってり
Jessi: rich, heavy, thick
Naomi: 「味が濃い」(strong flavor) という意味です。
油や、バターをたくさん使って、油っぽい (oily) イメージがありますね。
Jessi: So こってり means that the flavor is thick or strong. Maybe a lot of oil or butter is used.
Yuichi: 例えば、カルボナーラとか、チョコレートケーキのような味のことが、こってりと言うんですね。
Jessi: So for example, the taste or flavor of spaghetti carbonara or chocolate cake can be described as こってり.
Yuichi: 「こってり」の反対の言葉は何ですか?
Naomi: 「さっぱり」
Jessi: plain, light, not fatty
Naomi: あまり油を使っていない、という感じはしますね。健康的なイメージもしますね。
Yuichi: うーん、そうですね。
Naomi: さっぱりした食べ物っていうと、ゆういちさん、何でしょうね?
Yuichi: 例えば、サラダとか、豆腐、あとは...フルーツのシャーベットとかもですね。
Jessi: So for example, tofu, salad or fruit sherbet might be considered さっぱり.
Naomi: 「こってり」も「さっぱり」も「している」と一緒に使われますね。
Jessi: Both こってり and さっぱり are often paired with している。例文お願いします。
Yuichi: 僕は、こってりしているラーメンが好きだ。
Jessi: I love rich, oily ramen.
Naomi: このラーメンはさっぱりしいて、おいしい。
Jessi: This ramen is not that fatty and tastes great. The next word is?
Naomi: かため
Jessi: somewhat hard
Jessi: So this word, かため must come from the adjective かたい, which means hard, right?
Naomi: そう、そう、そう、その通りです。[Adjective stem plus め] は「すこし~だ」という意味なんですね。
Jessi: Adding め to the stem of an adjective adds the nuance of "somewhat". So, to go through some more examples...
Naomi: 硬い
Jessi: hard
Naomi: 硬め
Jessi: somewhat hard
Yuichi: やわらかい
Jessi: soft
Yuichi: やわらかめ
Jessi: somewhat soft
Naomi: そういえば、この前サブウェイサンドイッチに行ったとき、お客さんが「あ、野菜、多めでお願いします」って言ってるのを聞きました。
Jessi: Ah, 多め "more than usual" or "extra."
Yuichi: 野菜を少し多くしてください、という意味ですね。できるんですか?
Naomi: うん、店員さんは「はい」って言って増やしてましたね。
Yuichi: おー、なるほど。

Lesson focus

Jessi: In this lesson, we're going to learn the difference between ために and ように. Both of them indicate purpose.
Naomi: じゃ、このレッスンは、まず、クイズから入りましょう。
Jessi: So you want to start off this section with a quiz? Sounds good.
Naomi: 今から、二つの文章を言います。一つは正しくて、一つは間違っています。どちらが間違っているかわかりますか。
Jessi: So we're going to give you two sentences. One is correct, and the other is incorrect. Please figure out which one is incorrect. Here's the first sentence.
Yuichi: 日本語が話せるように、毎日勉強しています。
Jessi: OK. And the second sentence?
Yuichi: 日本語が話せるために、毎日勉強しています
Jessi: So did you think about it? Yuichi-san, which is the correct sentence?
Yuichi: 日本語が話せるように、毎日勉強しています。
Jessi: So the first one was correct. “I'm studying Japanese every day in order to be able to speak Japanese.” So 日本語が話せるために毎日勉強しています is an incorrect sentence?
Naomi:そうですね。「ように」と「ために」は似ていますが、「ように」 の前には potential や nai form が来ることが多いです。
Jessi: Although ように and ために are similar, ように is used with potential forms and nai forms of verbs. So in this case 話せる is the potential form of the verb 話す, which is why it has to be followed by ように.
Naomi: じゃ、まず「ように」の使い方から、勉強しましょう。
Jessi: As we just mentioned, ように, meaning "so that", comes after the potential form or nai form of a verb. It's also used with verbs that are not volitional, meaning they are not done by the will of the one doing the action. 例文お願いします。
Yuichi: 遅れないように早く起きた。
Jessi: “I got up early so that I wouldn't be late.” 遅れない is the nai form so it has to be followed by ように. Can you give me another example?
Yuichi: 風邪がよくなるように、薬を飲んだ。
Jessi: “I took medicine so that I would get better.”
Naomi: 次に「ために」を勉強しましょう。
Jessi: ために is only acceptable when the action that comes before is volitional, meaning it is done intentionally/by the will of the one doing the action. For example,
Yuichi: お金を貯めるために、アルバイトをしました。
Jessi: “I worked a part-time job to save money.”
Naomi: 「ために」の前は、他動詞(transitive verb)です。「ように」の前は、自動詞(intransitive verb) か 可能形 (potential form) か Nai formです。
Yuichi: 「お金を貯める」は "to save or accumulate money" ですね。これは、他動詞 (transitive verb) 。ですから「ために」をつけて、「お金を貯めるために、アルバイトをしました。」と言います。
Naomi: じゃあ、もう一つ、例を見ましょう。お金が貯まる (the money accumulates) は自動詞 (intransitive verb)ですね。だから、「ように」をつけて「お金が貯まるように、アルバイトをしました。」です。
Jessi: So to summarize, ために is used with transitive verbs, and ように is used with intransitive verbs, or verbs in their potential or nai form. お金を貯めるために - this is in transitive, and お金が貯まるように, this is intransitive.
Naomi: うーん、「貯まる」と「貯める」ですね。
Yuichi: では、練習しましょう。
Jessi: Let's recap this lesson with a quiz. Yuichi is going to read a sentence that includes a blank. Please guess whether ために or ように goes in the blank.
Yuichi: 大学に入れる (blank) たくさん勉強しなければならない。
Jessi: "I have to study a lot so that I can get into university."
Here's a hint - 入れる is the potential form of the verb 入る.... And the answer is?
Yuichi: 大学に入れるようにたくさん勉強しなければならない。
Jessi: “I have to study a lot so that I can get into university.”
Okay everyone, how did it go?
Yuichi: どうでしたか? もっと、詳しい事がわかるように、レッスンノートに説明をのせておきました。ぜひ読んでください。

Naomi: 忘れないように、ぜひ復習してください。
