Lesson focus
|
Jessi: In this Lower Intermediate series, we'll start by covering conjunctions. First, we're going to take a look at the -ใใ conjunction in this lesson, which is made up of the -ใ form of a verb followed by ใ. It basically means "upon completion of an action or event." So a clause that has -ใใ is talking about an action that occurs or may occur before another action. A lot of the time, it translates to "if" or "when". Could you give us an example? |
Naomi: ๆฅๆฌใซ่กใฃใใใๅฏๅฃซๅฑฑใซ่กใใใใ |
Jessi: 'When I go to Japan, I want to visit Mt.Fuji.' |
Jessi: Let's see how we came up with this. The -ใใ form is made by adding -ใ to the informal past form, which is also called the ใ form. As in the example, the verb ่กใ becomes ่กใฃใ in the ใ form. Then you attach ใ. That becomes |
Naomi: ่กใฃใใ |
Jessi: "When I go". As another example, how do you say "When I grow up"? |
Naomi: ๅคงไบบใซใชใ is "to be an adult"or "to be a grown-up" So...ๅคงไบบใซใชใฃใใใ |
Yuichi: ๅคงไบบใซใชใฃใใใๆตทๅคใซ่กใใใใ |
Jessi: When I grow up, I want to go abroad. You hear the first part of this phrase a lot when you ask little kids what they want to be when they grow up. Like, ๅคงไบบใซใชใฃใใใไฝใซใชใใใ๏ผ'What do you want to be when you grow up?' |
Naomi: ใใใงใใญใ |
Jessi: OK. How about adjectives๏ผ |
Naomi: You add ใ to an adjective in the past tense. For example ๅฏใ means 'cold' and it's an i-adjective. The informal past is... |
Yuichi: ๅฏใใฃใ. |
Naomi: And add ใ. |
Yuichi: ๅฏใใฃใใ. ๅฏใใฃใใใใใผใฟใผใใคใใฆใใ ใใใ |
Jessi: 'If it's cold, please turn on the heater.' |
Naomi: And for na-adjective and nouns, they have the same rule. |
Jessi: Right. Change ใงใ into ใ ใฃใ which is the informal past form of ใงใ, and attach ใ. So let's take a look at the example. |
Yuichi: ้ช is 'snow'. |
Jessi: Add the informal past form of the copula and attach ใ. |
Yuichi: ้ชใ ใฃใใ. |
Yuichi: ้ชใ ใฃใใใๅฎถใซๅฑ
ใใใ |
Jessi: 'If it snows, I want to stay at home.' |
Naomi: ๆชใใชใใงใใญใThat's not bad, is it? |
Jessi: And also please note that the main clause, the one that comes after ใใ, is usually expressing someone's intention, request or an obligation. |
Jessi: Now, let's practice. Yuichi is going to ask questions about different situations using ใใ. "If [blank,] what would you do?". So for these questions, please think of how you would answer.ใงใฏใใใใใกใใใใ้กใใใพใใ |
