Naomi: なおみです。
Yuichi: 祐一です。
Peter: Peter here. Giving and receiving in Japanese. もらう。
Naomi: 今回はバレンタインのストーリーの4回目ですね。2回目のストーリでは　くれる、3回目のストーリではあげるを勉強しました。
Peter: This dialog is the 4th episode of our Valentine story series.And it's also the third and last part of a 3-part series. We have covered kureru as an auxiliary verb in the second lesson and ageru as an auxiliary verb in the third lesson.The focus of this lesson is an auxiliary verb もらう.
Yuichi: 前回のレッスンでは、圭介が浩二から夏子のチョコレートをもらって、食べてしまいました。
Peter: This conversation takes place at school. In the previous lesson, Keisuke ate the chocolate that Natsuko gave to Koji.
Yuichi: 今日のレッスンは、それから1ヵ月後のホワイトデーの話のようです。
Peter: This conversation takes place one month later on White day. The conversation is between Keisuke and Natsuko.
Yuichi: 友達なのでカジュアルな日本語です。
Peter: The speakers are friends, therefore the speakers/speaker will be speaking in informal Japanese.
Yuichi: それでは聞いてみましょう。
DIALOGUE
（ホワイトデー、学校のチャイム）
キーンコーンカーンコーン
圭介:おはよう！夏子ちゃん。そのバックかわいいね。
夏子:あ、ありがとう。お父さんに買ってもらったの。ホワイトデーのお返し。
圭介:夏子ちゃんどうしたの？元気ない？
夏子:ねぇ、圭介くん。浩二君にチョコレート渡してくれた？
圭介:え？ああ。もちろん、届けてあげたよ。
夏子:そうだよね。届けてくれたよね。
: あ、浩二君、私のチョコレート食べてくれたかなぁ。
: あ、もしかして、チョコレート美味しくなかったのかなぁ。
圭介:いや、あれは、すごくおいしかったよ。
夏子:え？なに？！私のチョコ食べたの？
圭介:いやいやいやいや。食べてないよ。
: 浩二が食べきれないから、ちょっとだけ分けてもらったんだよ。
夏子:ひどい！浩二君、圭介君に私のチョコをあげたのね！
圭介:でも、おいしかったよ。本当に。
夏子:そう。じゃあ、来年は圭介君に義理チョコを作ってあげるわ。
もう一度お願いします。今度はゆっくりお願いします。

圭介:おはよう！夏子ちゃん。そのバックかわいいね。
夏子:あ、ありがとう。お父さんに買ってもらったの。ホワイトデーのお返し。
圭介:夏子ちゃんどうしたの？元気ない？
夏子:ねぇ、圭介くん。浩二君にチョコレート渡してくれた？
圭介:え？ああ。もちろん、届けてあげたよ。
夏子:そうだよね。届けてくれたよね。
: あ、浩二君、私のチョコレート食べてくれたかなぁ。
: あ、もしかして、チョコレート美味しくなかったのかなぁ。
圭介:いや、あれは、すごくおいしかったよ。
夏子:え？なに？！私のチョコ食べたの？
圭介:いやいやいやいや。食べてないよ。
: 浩二が食べきれないから、ちょっとだけ分けてもらったんだよ。
夏子:ひどい！浩二君、圭介君に私のチョコをあげたのね！
圭介:でも、おいしかったよ。本当に。
夏子:そう。じゃあ、来年は圭介君に義理チョコを作ってあげるわ。
今度は英語が入ります。

圭介:おはよう！夏子ちゃん。そのバックかわいいね。
English: Morning, Natsuko-chan! Cute bag.
夏子:あ、ありがとう。お父さんに買ってもらったの。ホワイトデーのお返し。
English: Thanks. My dad got it for me, as a White Day present.
圭介:夏子ちゃんどうしたの？元気ない？
English: What's wrong Natsuko-chan? You don't look so good.
夏子:ねぇ、圭介くん。浩二君にチョコレート渡してくれた？
English: Keisuke-kun, did you give Koji-kun my chocolates?
圭介:え？ああ。もちろん、届けてあげたよ。
English: Huh? Yeah, of course I did.
夏子:そうだよね。届けてくれたよね。: あ、浩二君、私のチョコレート食べてくれたかなぁ。
English: Right, of course you did. I wonder if he ate them.
: あ、もしかして、チョコレート美味しくなかったのかなぁ。
Maybe he didn't like them…
圭介:いや、あれは、すごくおいしかったよ。
English: No way, they were delicious!
夏子:え？なに？！私のチョコ食べたの？
English: Huh, what? You ate my chocolate??
圭介:いやいやいやいや。食べてないよ。: 浩二が食べきれないから、ちょっとだけ分けてもらったんだよ。
English: No, no, no. I didn't. But Koji couldn't eat them all, so he shared some with me.
夏子:ひどい！浩二君、圭介君に私のチョコをあげたのね！
English: That's horrible! So Koji-kun gave you my chocolate!
圭介:でも、おいしかったよ。本当に。
English: But they were delicious, really.
夏子:そう。じゃあ、来年は圭介君に義理チョコを作ってあげるわ。
English: Really...well, I guess I'll give you some obligatory chocolate next year then.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Yuichi: はい、これが最終回でした。This is the final episode of our Valentine's Day story. 夏子が、最後に義理チョコを作ってあげるわ！って言ってましたね。義理チョコが何か教えてもらえますか？直美先生。 Could you tell us what 義理チョコ is?
Naomi: 義理チョコって言うのはobligation Chocolate?　バレンタインデーのチョコレートには二つ名前が、まあ、あると思うんですね。一つは、本命チョコ。ひとつは義理チョコです。
Peter: 本命チョコ chocolate for one's sweetheart　義理チョコ　chocolate out of courtesy？
Naomi: そうですね。好きな人にあげるのは本命チョコ。義理チョコは、会社の同僚とかともだちにあげます。後は、ああ、この人、チョコレートもらえないからかわいそうだなぁ・・・とか思った人にもあげたりしますね。
Peter: So girls give 本命チョコto someone who they love.　義理チョコ is given to a co-workers or someone who has really done nice things. And then it’s also a kind of like sympathy chocolate for someone he likes oh that guy is not going to get it anything. And then there is also 友チョコ.
Naomi: あーそうね。
Peter: So girls give it to each other.
Naomi: なんか、we exchange chocolate.
Yuichi: あっ、なおみさん、去年義理チョコくれましたよね。
Naomi: あれは義理チョコじゃなかったのに。
Yuichi: みんなもらってましたからね。はい。ピーターももらいましたよね、なおみさんから？
Peter: エッ―（笑）今のは何でしたっけ？
Naomi: 今のは冗談です。
Peter: So you’re just kidding around.
Naomi: 義理チョコ、まあね、みなさんに、まゆみさんと私からチョコレートを渡しました。
Yuichi: で、本命チョコはだいたい手作りで、義理チョコは買ったやつですよね？
Peter: Basically 本命チョコ is homemade, and　義理チョコ is store bought.
Naomi: そんなことはないでしょ。
Peter: ないですね。
Naomi: だって、お店で買ったチョコレートの方が絶対においしいですし、そのほうが安いんですよ。私、前に女の子から、友チョコで、手作りチョコレートもらったことありますけど、ま、微妙ですよね。
Peter: So I don’t know this is ...I don’t know uh...let me try explain. So Naomi-sensei feels that it’s not the case that 本命 it’s not like we both feel cases that 本命チョコ is not necessarily 本命 the person he really love but it could be ????(00: 09: 30) Naomi-sensei feels very strongly that you have spend money to show you a love.
Naomi: そんな人なの私は！（笑）
Peter: And then 本命 its stuff ????(00: 09: 41) It really doesn’t matter the person put their heart into making the stuff. Its taste matters. 大体そんな感じですね。
Nomi: There is not what I’m trying to say.あの、ま、美味しい方がいいから（一同笑）お店で買った方が良いとお姉さんは思います。
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Peter: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Naomi: 最初の単語は？
Yuichi: お返し　(a return gift /to give something back)
Naomi: おは、honorific prefixですね。返し　は、 masu stem of a verb 返す to return.
お返しをする、お返しをおくる
Peter: It can be to return a gift. It has several other meanings but in this case, to return a gift. To return a gift ???(00: 10: 30) you give a gift back not you return a gift to store,so to return someone’s gift. To return the act of getting a gift by giving a gift.
Naomi: もてもてのゆういちさんは、バレンタインデーのお返しはしましたか。
Yuichi: えっーと、もてもてではないので、はい、しません。
Naomi: えっ！しないんだ。
Yuichi: ま、人によります。
Naomi: どういうことだろう。ひどいねー。
Peter: ひどいですねー。さすが、もてもてな人ですね。
Naomi: もてもてだから、チョイスするがいっぱいあるんだね。
Yuichi: でも、ピーターさんお返しって面倒くさくないですか？
Peter: あー、めんどくさいですね。まあ、1回ぐらいは良いですけど…でも、ちょっとめんどくさいですね。It’s kind of a pain to give things back. I prefer to skip.
Naomi: 次の単語は、分ける（to share）。祐一さん、例文お願いします。
Yuichi: 誕生日にケーキをもらったので、家族で分けてたべた。
Peter: I received a birthday cake. So I shared it with my family and we ate it. ちょっと意味わかんないです。家族からケーキもらうでしょ。
Naomi: 違う違う。多分、祐一さんは友達から誕生日のケーキをもらったんです。で、いくつに分けたんですか？（How many pieces did you divide it into?）
Yuichi: 　４つにわけました。
Peter: Into 4 pieces.
Naomi: あっ、4人家族？
Yuichi: あっ、そうですね。はい。
Naomi: 次の単語は？
Yuichi: 届ける　(to deliver)　このストーリーでは圭介くんが浩二君にチョコレートを届けましたね。
Peter: 届ける　is a transitive verb so you need an object and object marker 「」を」
Naomi: チョコを届ける。
Peter: The intransitive verb is
Naomi: 届く
Peter: to arrive, to be delivered　For transitive verb there are no object. And things to deliver is marked with...
Yuichi: が
Naomi: チョコが届く。
Yuichi: チョコを届ける。
Peter: To deliver chocolate
Yuichi: チョコが届く。（Chocolate is arrived.)
Peter: Onto today’s grammar point.
Naomi: 次は文法です。
Peter: In the last two lessons, we covered the "giving" auxiliary verbs, kureru and ageru. In today's lesson, we’re going to focus on the receiving verb morau as an auxiliary verb. When もらう follows the -te form of another verb, it acts as an auxiliary meaning "someone is doing something for [me or a person in group]." Okey, I think we can explain this much clear through examples by introducing the verb
Yuichi: 買う (to buy)
Peter: What’s the te form
Yuichi: 買って
Peter: Now let’s combine with the receiving verb もらう
Yuichi: 買ってもらう
Peter: This means to have someone buy something for you. To receive that action of buying for you. Now here the object marked is 「を」 and let’s just pick up the object ‘Let’s go with a car.’ We have...
Yuchi: 車を買ってもらう
Peter: So this means to receive the buying a car.The doer of the verb もらう is marked by に　in this case,so the person who buys the car for the speaker or someone in this speaker’s group is marked with 「に」 so Yuichi-sensei, what happend let’s say Naomi-sensei buys a car for me.
Yuichi: なおみさんに車をかってもらう。
Peter: The buyer of the car is Naomi-sensei. She is marked with one more time.
Yuichi: に
Peter: なおみ先生に車を買ってもらう。The receiver is the Subject there marked with.
Yuichi: は
Peter: So in this case
Yuichi: ぼくは、なおみさんに車をかってもらう。
Peter: Yuichi also received the buying of a car. Again marked by は and buyer doer of the action when combined the verb te-もらう is marked by に. The sentence structure is same as when we use the verb もらう,
Naomi: 買ってあげないですけどね。（一同笑）私は、祐一さんに車を買ってあげません。
Peter: ケチですね。
Naomi: 無理無理。高いもん、だって。
Peter: だって、中古もありますし、ケチ。
Naomi: I’m concerning about environment.
Peter: 経済にいい。
Yuichi: じゃあ、自転車を買ってもらいます。
Naomi: はい、買いませんと！えー、ピーターさん、誰がこのバレンタインデーのストーリを書いたか知っていますか？
Peter: So do I know who wrote the story? はい、知ってますよ。祐一先生ですね。
Naomi: そうです。祐一くんがストーリーとレッスンノートを書いてくれました。
Peter: Yuichi wrote the story and the lesson notes.
Yuichi: でも、真由美さんと、直美さんと、ダニエルさんに直してもらいました。
Peter: But he received the corrections from Daniel, Naomi and Mayumi.
Naomi: ね、偉いですね。ピーターさん、祐一さんを褒めてあげてください。それから、自転車を買ってあげてください。
Peter: 仕方ないですね。
Naomi: おー、すごいすごい！約束したよ。
Peter: ほめてあげます。
Yuichi: 自転車は？
Peter: こら、祐一くん。このストーリーは悪くないですね。
Yuichi: はい、ありがとうございます。
Naomi: で、自転車は？
Peter: 自転車を買ってあげます。
Naomi: ほんと！すごーい！
Yuichi: じゃあ、スタジオまで自転車でこれからきます。
Naomi: すごーい。よかったね、祐一君ね。
Yuichi: はい。
Naomi: じゃあ、レッスンはこのへんで。
Yuichi: さよなら。
