INTRODUCTION
Becky:Hi everyone! Welcome back to JapanesePod101.com. This is Japanese for Everyday Life Lower Intermediate Series, Lesson 4 - Ordering Pizza in Japanese, Part 2.
Kaori:こんにちは!古橋香織 です!Hi everyone, Kaori Furuhashi here!
Becky:And I'm Becky. This lesson is a continuation from the previous lesson.
Kaori:はい、このレッスンは、前回の続きです。
Becky:In the last lesson, you learned the first part of the phone conversation with a pizza shop. After the employee answers the phone, what is the expression you should say?
Kaori: 覚えていますか?「ピザの配達をお願いします。」ですね。
Becky:Now, in this lesson, you’ll learn the main part of ordering a pizza - how to order the type of pizza you want, what size, and which crust type.
Kaori: 生地の種類
Kaori:Beckyさん、ピザの生地は、厚い生地
Becky:“thick crust”
Kaori: と薄い生地
Becky:“thin crust”
Kaori: どちらが好きですか?
Becky:I like thin crust better. Pizza places should always ask you, “Which type of crust would you like?” when you order a pizza.
Kaori:そうですね。「どちらの生地にしますか?」と聞かれたら、Becky さんの場合は、「薄い生地でお願いします。」と言うといいですね。
Becky: “I'd like thin crust.”
Kaori:「薄い生地でお願いします。」
MODEL DIALOG
Becky:Listen to the dialogue and participate when prompted by speaking aloud in Japanese. Use the patterns of Japanese you studied in the Beginner-level lessons. After you speak, you'll hear a model line of dialogue. Your answer does not need to be exactly the same, but do compare your response to the model line.
In this lesson, you’ll play the role of a customer calling a pizza delivery shop. Your goal is to order the pizza you want over the phone.
Kaori:では、ご注文をお願いします。
Becky:The employee asked you, “Your order, please.” Say, “One large teriyaki pizza, please.”
[pause]
Customer: テリヤキピザのLサイズを一枚、お願いします。
Employee: はい。ピザの生地はどうしますか。
Becky:The employee asked which pizza crust would you like. Ask, “What kind of crust do you have?”
[pause]
Person A: どんな生地がありますか。
Employee: はい、パン生地タイプの厚い生地と、クリスピータイプの薄い生地がございます。
Becky:The employee said that they have a thick pan crust and a crispy thin crust. Say, “The thin type then, please.”
[pause]
Person A: じゃあ、薄い方でお願いします。
Employee: かしこまりました。ご注文は以上でよろしいでしょうか。
Becky:The employee asked, “Will that be all?” Answer, “Yes” and ask how long it will take.
[pause]
Person A: はい。どれくらいかかりますか。
Employee: 40分程でお届けします。ご注文ありがとうございました。
Becky:The employee answered, “It will take about forty minutes,” and then said, “Thank you for your order.”

Lesson focus

Becky:This task requires two expressions. The first one is "One large teriyaki pizza , please.”
Kaori:テリヤキピザのLサイズを一枚、お願いします。
Kaori:テリヤキピザ
Becky:“teriyaki pizza”, which is the name of a pizza you’ll likely see on the menu.
Kaori:L サイズ
Becky:“Large size”
Kaori:一枚
Becky:“one whole” pizza
Becky:You say the name of the pizza first, and the size, and then how many you want. So, the sentence structure is, “name of the pizza, plus...
Kaori:の
Becky:plus the size, plus
Kaori:を
Becky:plus how many, plus
Kaori:お願いします
Kaori:テリヤキピザのLサイズを一枚、お願いします。
Becky:Now, order one medium seafood pizza.
[pause]
Kaori:シーフードピザのMサイズを1枚、お願いします。
Becky:Next, order two large “shrimp pizzas”.
Kaori:シュリンプピザ
[pause]
Kaori:シュリンプピザのLサイズを2枚、お願いします。
Becky:The next expression useful for this task is “the thin type, please.”
Kaori:薄い方でお願いします。
Becky:The particle
Kaori:で
Becky:indicates the materials used. So, this is meant to say “please make it with a thin crust.”
Kaori:そうですね。ですから、「薄い方でお願いします。」は、「薄い生地で作ってください。」という意味で言っています。
Becky:Now, imagine you’re ordering a pizza and are asked which crust you would like; thick or thin? Answer, “the thick type, please.”
[pause]
Kaori:厚い方でお願いします。
Becky:Now, the other way to say thin is “crispy type”. Answer using “crispy type, please.”
[pause]
Kaori:クリスピータイプでお願いします。
TIP
Becky:Now, how do you ask how big a large size is?
Kaori:Lサイズは、どれくらいの大きさですか。大きさ...
Becky:“size”
Kaori:どれぐらいの大きさ
Becky:“How big a size...”
Kaori:Lサイズは、どれくらいの大きさですか。
Becky:“How big a size is the large size?” Or, “how big is the large size?”
Kaori:お店の人は、「直径30cmです。」
Becky:“It’s thirty centimeters in diameter.”
Kaori:と答えるかもしれません。
Becky:Or, they might tell you, “It’s for three or four people.”
Kaori:3名から4名用です。
Becky:Ask how big the medium size is.
[pause]
Kaori:Mサイズは、どれくらいの大きさですか。
