INTRODUCTION
Becky:Hi everyone! Welcome back to JapanesePod101.com. This is Japanese for Everyday Life Lower Intermediate Series, Lesson 12 - Getting Medicine at a Drugstore
Kaori:こんにちは!古橋香織 です!Hi everyone, Kaori Furuhashi here!
Becky:I'm Becky. In this lesson, you'll learn a useful skill for when you’re in a drugstore - How to buy drugs at a drugstore.
Kaori:前回のレッスンでは、調剤薬局("dispensing pharmacy")での会話を勉強しましたが、今回は、ドラッグストアで薬を買う時の会話を勉強しましょう。
Becky:That’ll be useful, because you might need to buy common drugs at a drugstore without any prescription from a doctor.
Kaori:はい。肩こり("stiff shoulder") とか、筋肉痛("muscle ache")とか、頭痛("headache")などの薬は、お医者さんからの処方箋なしに、ドラッグストアで買うことができますからね。
Becky:Yeah, I sometimes buy medicine for stiff shoulders at the drugstore. Usually I buy the same medicine, but I wonder if they have a better one.
Kaori:そういう時は、「肩こりがひどいんですが、何かいい薬はありますか。」と聞いてみましょう。
Becky:"I have a bad stiff shoulder. Do you have a good medicine for this?”
Kaori:はい。「肩こりがひどいんですが、何かいい薬はありますか。」
MODEL DIALOG
Becky:Listen to the dialogue and participate when prompted by speaking aloud in Japanese. Use the patterns of Japanese you studied in the Beginner-level lessons. After you speak, you'll hear a model line of dialogue. Your answer doesn't need to be exactly the same, but do compare your response to the model line.
In this lesson, you'll play the role of a customer at a drugstore. Your goal is to describe your symptom to get medicine at a drugstore.
Becky:(You enter a drugstore.)
Pharmacist: いらっしゃいませ。
Becky:(Say, “I have a bad stiff shoulder. Do you have a good medicine for this?”)
(pause)
Person A: 肩こりがひどいんですが、何かいい薬はありますか。
Pharmacist: 貼り薬と塗り薬、飲み薬がありますが、どれがいいですか。
Becky:(The Pharmacist told you that they have skin plasters, ointment, and oral medicine, and asked which one you want. Ask "which do you recommend?” )
(pause)
Person A: お勧めはどれですか。
Pharmacist: そうですね。こちらは、新製品でよく効くと思います。
Becky:(He recommended one because it’s a new medicine and it works well. Say, “this skin plaster, please.”)
(pause)
Person A: じゃ、この貼り薬をください。

Lesson focus

Becky:A key expression for this task is, “I have a bad stiff shoulder. Do you have a good medicine for this?”
Kaori:肩こりがひどいんですが、何かいい薬はありますか。
Becky:The first part of this sentence is the clause meaning "I have a bad stiff shoulder"
Kaori:肩こりがひどい
Becky:This is followed by a sentence-ending phrase to explain the situation,
Kaori:んですが
Kaori:肩こりがひどいんですが、
Becky:It’s explaining your situation or symptom.
Becky:After that, you ask the pharmacist for his help by saying, “Do you have any good medicine for this?”
Kaori:何かいい薬はありますか。
Kaori:何か
Becky:...means “anything” or “any” in a question sentence. You don’t have to include...
Kaori:何か
Becky:...and just say...
Kaori:いい薬はありますか。
Becky:But, you can add an implication that you have no idea, and you express your uncertainty if you say...
Kaori:何かいい薬はありますか。
Becky:So, the sentence, “I have a bad stiff shoulder. Do you have a good medicine?” is,
Kaori:肩こりがひどいんですが、何かいい薬はありますか。
Becky:The sentence structure is,
Becky:[describing your symptom] +
Kaori:(んですが) + (何かいい薬はありますか。)
Becky:Let’s practice. You have a bad muscle ache, and ask if they have any good medicine.
(Pause)
Kaori:筋肉痛がひどいんですが、何かいい薬はありますか。
Becky:You have a runny nose, and ask if they have any good medicine.
(Pause)
Kaori:鼻水が出るんですが、何かいい薬はありますか。
TIP
Becky:Here's another expression to ask if they have any good medicine for your symptom. If you have a stiff shoulder, you can say,
Kaori:肩こりに効く薬はありますか。
Becky:The first part is the phrase meaning “a medicine good for a stiff shoulder”
Kaori:肩こりに効く薬
Becky:The verb meaning “work” or “take effect” is
Kaori:効く
Becky:You add a particle indicating an object of an action
Kaori:に
Becky:to get the verb phrase meaning “work for” or “take effect on”
Kaori:に効く
Becky:A medicine good for some symptom is, [symptom] +
Kaori:( に効く)+ ( くすり)
Becky:"a medicine good for headache"
Kaori:頭痛に効く薬
Becky:"a medicine good for muscle ache"
Kaori:筋肉痛に効く薬
PRACTICE OF DIALOG
Becky:Now try to participate in the dialogue using some alternative words you learned in this lesson. This time you'll play the role of a person who wants a medicine for a stuffy nose. Use as many of the expressions you learned in this lesson as possible. Let's get started!
Becky:(You enter a drugstore.)
Pharmacist: いらっしゃいませ。
Becky:(Say, “My nose is stuffy. Do you have a good medicine?”)
(pause)
Person A: 鼻が詰まるんですが、何かいい薬はありますか。
Pharmacist: 飲み薬とスプレーがありますが、どちらがいいですか。
Becky:(The Pharmacist told you that they have oral medicine and spray and asked which one you want. Ask "which do you recommend?” )
(pause)
Person A: お勧めはどちらですか。
Pharmacist: そうですね。こちらは、新製品でよく効くと思います。
Becky:(He recommended one because it’s a new medicine and it works well. Say, “this oral medicine, please.”)
(pause)
Person A: じゃ、この飲み薬をください。
Becky:How did you do? There are in fact a large number of variations you can use in this situation. Make sure to look for them in the lesson notes.

Outro

Becky:Okay, That’s all for this lesson.
Kaori:ドラッグストアでどんな薬を買ったことがありますか。教えてくださいね。
Becky:In the next lesson, you’ll learn conversations for when you’re in a fitting room at a shop.
Kaori:それではまた!
Becky:See you all next time!
