Japanese language support on PDAs

Postby Stefan » September 16th, 2006 2:56 pm

Hi everyone.

I didn't think this topic fitted in anywhere very well so I've place it under general chit-chat. Basically I'm looking in to buying a PDA to assist in both my degree studies and japanese studies. However, I'm unable to lay my hands on any information regarding setting up support for japanese language (east asian language support) on them.

I'm looking at a "standard" PDA with Windows Mobile 2003 or v5, and would like to be able to write in english or japanese, as well as read both. Standard desktop support works very nicely, typing in romaji and using spacebar to select the correct writings. Does such a setup exist for PDAs? Commercial or non-commercial solutions are both viable as it would become integral to my studies.

It would also be nice to be able to use EDICT on the PDA (http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~jwb/j_edict.html), not found a specific viewer for portable devices yet though.

Thanks in advance ^^

I know it's possible because I did it when I had a WM PDA. You have to do a little "hacking", but nothing major. At least I had to with WM2003. Unfortunately, I don't have the link to the original site I used. But I found this one that looks like what you want:

Awesome! Thank you Jason!

Next up is to find an EDICT reader...

http://padict.sourceforge.net/ - its for palm os but you can emulate it on windows mobile devices if you need to (I can't vouch for how well it works like that, as I have a palm os 5 device, the T|X)
I'm pretty sure it uses edict, kanji dic and some stroke order database.
Check out the screenshots, it is really good software.

While I'm posting in the thread, if anyone knows a good japanese to japanese dictionary (i.e. Japanese definitions) for palm os5, please tell me! (especially if its free or at least cheap xD)
