Furigana in the pdf

Postby scnnrc » May 28th, 2007 9:24 am

In the PDF I don't really like the kana version. It takes a too much to find which Kanji it's related to. It'd be better if you used furigana (the kana above the kanji) as in real Japanese.
This would make reading faster IMHO.

I agree, furigana would be so much more useful than to look back and forth between the kana and kanji. This is what most Japanese text books do.

I agree. If instead of kana only, we had furigana, we'd be getting used to viewing kanji, while also knowing that we're reading it correctly. This is a great idea.

I agree as well - it would be a nice touch.

I also agree! furigana is better than 2 versions.

Don't people find it hard not to read furigana when it's there? It's been proven that the process of looking up words helps you remember them; if the English translations of words were above the Japanese, would you remember half as many?

The kanji, as it is, forces you to remember the reading or check the kana, and then perhaps a dictionary, until you can read it. Furigana offers a neat little shortcut that provides convenience in the short-term, and not much else.

I have learned to read a lot of kanji simply by going over the dialogues until I can read them. It's a pain, but nobody said learning the most inefficient writing system in the world would be easy.

I think it'd suit lower-levels to help beginners get an idea of how kanji 'works', but having it in intermediate transcripts would be a joke, and a messy one at that.

While we're at it, why not just remove romaji? Any serious learner of Japanese needs to learn hiragana first. I find romaji a distraction.

I agree, although I do support leaving it in the beginner lessons. (The target of those lessons is people who are just starting, thus likely haven't learned any kana yet.

If we remove the romaji and add furigana as well this will save us a whole page (or more). In this way not only the document will be easier to print but we will save our tree!!! :picket:
