Piracy in Japan...

Postby EdMcMayhem » May 29th, 2010 6:23 pm

Hello everyone,

I'm going to be moving to Japan very soon, and I had a question about some of the piracy laws of Japan.

My employer has mentioned to me a few times things I shouldn't bring with me, such as; pornography, pirated music, pirated movies, drugs, etc...

Most of the things I can't bring are no brainers (except the porn...). Anyway, I'm most concerned about the piracy law.

I don't have illegal movies or music on my computer, but I do have a TON of ROMs (ROMs are video game files that you can play on your computer). They're legal to download if you own the actual game itself and just want to back it up, or if you delete the file within 24 hours.

Anyway, when I'm going through customs or just traveling through the airport, Japanese security won't stop me to look through my computer, Nintendo DS, PSP, Wii, etc.... will they?

I'm just paranoid because I'd hate to get in trouble for something so stupid (on my part). And I know they say piracy in Japan is illegal, but I'm sure 90% of all Japanese kids with a computer download stuff illegally. So, I'm wondering if it's enforced as much as I think it is. I mean, it's illegal in the U.S., too... but we all know how that goes.

Thanks,

Ed

I wouldn't worry about it, but I have no information. But, I wanted to point out that the 'legal for 24 hours' thing on roms is bullshit from rom websites. It's not legal for any period of time.
